Everything you need to know to get you started when cooking in the woods - the gear, what to carry, what to forage and what to cook!
This is the last in my five part series aimed anyone just starting out in bushcraft. And I have continued my theme of "keeping it simple". This one also fits in the "Canteen Cup Tuesday" category.
Have a look at the Wild Food School website:

Hi Neil I'm teaching my granddaughter who is 5 to be outdoors. Love the opinel option as the mora's are a bit large for her. Totally agree with tou about teaching kids about knives as tools.

Hi Neil. You remind me of Keith Floyd, cooking out in the field like that. If you hold your nettles over the five for a few moments, while they are on the stalk, the Formica acid in them will evaporate and not stink you when you cut them up. Also, you can further cook them on the stalks until they are crispy, and eat them like that. They taste like spinach. All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧🏕

Good stuff Neil. Eat your hat James Martin! ...lol. Actually Jim's alright I met him once down in New Milton, Hampshire. He came to do an exhibition for a tv show and used our kitchen and patio grounds. (I did meet another guy from Kernow who was okay I guess, bit up himself, good chef, but his little dog tried to bite everyone, the little bugger).

I am really enjoying going through your videos Neil. I’ve only just found your channel but there’s a wealth of info on so many topics, and “all at budget prices”! That is really appreciated. I especially found this one good. I’ve always been cautious about food, but I might give nettles a try.. Nice to hear your accent too, as a lad from Chatham now living in the North! Les

Same with the older US army steel mess tin and canteen cup, I don't have the British set, but they are so similar and the British set is a lot less available than the US army gear here on the states, picked up my canteen and cover for $1 and had to spend $6.95 on the cup, but the cup was the earlier vietnam steel ones, and got my 1944 mess kit for $2 because the date was unreadable until I brasso'd it later lol

Nice one Neil . Been looking at the carbs to carry lately and gives you a good choice if you have a couple if varients comparing calories per 100gms and pack size is also Interesting . New one to me is Toasted Buckwheat a Russian staple you can even make a crude popcorn with it . Cooks easily as a savoury porrage or add to stews . Just starting to do some cooking vids as I redo my cook set etc .

Great video Neil. I have been learning a few edibles over the last couple of years and I have been gaining confidence in my I'd's but what dishes to use them in is certainly an area I struggle with. I do find rehydrated beef jerky is an excellent addition to a meal when trying to keep lightweight and a great addition to anyone's list of ingredients in their pack.

Foraging is I believe my biggest weakness when out on my own. I'm full on monochromatic colour blind. I only see in black and white (and all the grey shades of the rainbow). So while I can easily identify by size, shape, and pattern, I have no idea if a berry is red, blue, green, or greyple for example. So I have to apply my rule of "If you don't 100% know, then the answer must be no". In some cases, smell helps, but that is often limited to fruits and a very few plant exceptions. There are just too many unsavory characters that look like the edible ones, and the differences are too subtle to trust when limited to dog-o-vision. I've tried plant identification apps, but they are wrong or offer too many possibilities to be trustworthy enough as far as edible or not goes. Hopefully those improve with time. If you have any ideas or suggestions, I would truly appreciate any thoughts and suggestions. It's not an issue when I am traveling with company, buy I feel I'm missing out considerably when on my own.
