Where I go to medical school there's a well known student that's at least in his 70s, you can always find him in the library. He's decided to study medicine after his wife passed away, that's the biggest example that it's never too late.
@nicolasvonderputten93445 жыл бұрын
@@willhoffert3744 yes in that case you're right, but I study medicine in Uruguay and there are clearly some differences, college education is free to begin with, there isn't a limited amount of spots and you enter directly after high school, so anyone has the chance to begin at least. What makes it competitive is the pace and difficulty. It's a total of 8 years to get your degree. When I began there was a total of almost 2000 students, only 800 pass aprox. to second year because of the filters and exams. The whole first year we only study Celular and Molecular biology, which tends to frighten most of the students, we enter the clinical part in the 4th year and then we begin our rotations. So give the old man some credit! lol I imagine the difficulties in the US and it should change soon in my opinion, with how much doctors are needed, without sacrificing the quality of education of course.

True story. My mother was a RN when I was growing up. She went to Med school when I went to college. I graduated college the same year she graduated Med school. Then I went to Med school in the same city where she did her residency. She did a 4 year residency in ob/gyn. When I was a fourth year Med student, I rotated on her service as she was then a senior/chief resident. I was young and care free! She went to Med school, had her 6th! Child while in Med school, and raised her 5 other kids while going to Med school and doing her residency. I still look back….impressed.

I started medical at age 40; I went to a Carribean medical school and failed STEP 1 thrice. After this, the school asked me to start all over again, but now I can't go back to the Caribbean. Besides, their medical education is nowhere near the standards of US medical schools. And since I failed the STEP 1 exam, I can't apply to US medical schools because of my failure, as my chances are very slim. But In my heart, I know my fate is to become a doctor; this is embedded in my soul. So now I'm studying to apply for the physician assistant school. After that, I will apply for medical school again because being a PA will improve my chances of rejoining medical school. So, I am following this path. I am old. I am turning 60 this year, but my age cannot stop me from following my dream.

Thank you for this video! It's inspiring. I think we forget that we can have 2nd, 3rd and 4th careers in our lifetime and as long as we are breathing, we can do anything. It might be more challenging but shoot, living life itself is a challenge! Breathing (when you think about the whole process) is a challenge! So,its best to just go for it😊

This video is old but I'm glad I found it! I'm 40, just got diagnosed with leukemia. Treatment is going well and I'm pretty sure I can get my medical back to go back to my airline pilot job but if for some reason I can't the whole process of being treated for cancer has made me super interested in possibly going to med school or becoming a PA. I'll probably go for it if I can't fly anymore

I have this feeling, that especially for our generation and the current research abroad, there is really no telling how old we really may get to. We literally could be a few years away from a breakthrough that DRASTICALLY advances human life expectancy. So may as well take the leap right.

I would seriously consider PA or NP at age 40. That is not because they could not go to medical school and be successful. However, the way things are going, NPs and PAs are only increasing in autonomy and scope of practice. The cost of medical school is growing exponentially. I would say the only exception is if you want to be in a surgical specialty. The opportunity cost is just so much greater.
@lydian57624 жыл бұрын
Here is the problem with your suggestion, yes NP and PAs responsabilities are growing exponentially but in certain places their salaries are capped. Can you imagine reaching the cap after 5-8 yrs working knowing you're doing more and more but can no longuer have a raise yet work as much as a Dr? I say go for med school if that is what they want and secure that bag while you're at it those student loans will not pay themselves. There is also more respects for Drs than nurses. There is an aweful lot of abuse from all levels in Nursing school it is terrible.

Will be getting my Bachelors at 32. Hoping to enter medical school then. Won't be done until I'm 39-40 ish, that's with med school+3 year residency without specializing. If I specialize that's another 1 to 3 years based on what I'm interested in. I regret not going to school when I was younger, but making up for it now.

I had seen young age successful people unhappy suicidal.,...i had seen old age people flooded with life. Age is just a no. Acheieve ur goals, don't bother wht other says. I entered med school after 25, till 31 finished mbbs, had a break due to family issues..now while entering pg ill b entering in my 40s. But i am happy for me. During all th process, I learned how to live happy alone. So move on. Lots of love, All th best everyone✌

I had to come with the terms that I was too old at 35, not strictly because of age, but because I didn't have much of a career before 35, so.... I don't have savings, I don't own a home, I don't have children and I'm not in a relationship. I'm pretty convinced attempting med school would delay all those by at least another 6 years if not longer and it terrifies me. Unfortunately most my 20's was spent taking care of family and I put my entire life on hold for it.

Being older is a double edge sword when it comes to academics. You will always be defined and categorized as an older non-traditional student with life experience, more worldly, etc. But the good news is you get to live your dream of becoming a Doctor.

I suppose being defined based on your age initially, as the most defining thing about a student, can get old quick. (No pun intended) Your peers will say " oh..THAT woman is 55 years old and JUST NOW becoming a Physician" Instead of things like " She's really cool and dedicated to learning.

I went to college [some] after I had been married for a while in my mid 20s. I took some coding classes to see if it was for me and a couple of guys told me "It's not too late to drop the class" when I told them what I was doing. People's fixation with age everywhere in my school really discouraged me and I gave up entirely on education it was too late even when I was 27!!!!!!! It sounds dumb now but I was embarrassed to be sitting with people who made a big deal about my age every day.
