You really don't need to be smart. 1. always have long term goals to keep you going 2. Be enthusiastic and humble about your knowledge, even if you get straight A's, no one is perfect. 3. Be hungry to learn, even if that makes you ask a doctor you dislike to help you. make those sacrifices 4. CONSISTENCY !!!!, you cant do well in one semester and stop, keep moving 5. know you weaknesses and accept the fact that you need to work on them, hey its okay everyone struggles in some subjects. The MCAT physics and math sections are too easy. Most of biological and physiological courses are memorization based, not much critical thinking. That is why math majors have the highest acceptance rates to medical schools, the smart doctors are more likely to come from there.

I flunked out of University of Tennessee Knoxville (university) then community college out of my hometown, twice out of rehab before age 24. I decided I had no other options in my life so I enrolled into medical school at a Russian university. Two other Americans were there but they left after a few months. I’m now a 4th year medical student who got a 260+ on USMLE step 1. I passed all preclinical courses and didn’t give up even when people were telling me you would never pass anatomy and physiology. Guess what I did. Don’t listen to people that bring you down. I networked with a local community hospital where I live and they told me I would have a good chance of matching into their residency program. All those people who told me I would not make it in college :) just don’t give up and keep moving forward

Hi Dr Webb! I hope you'll be able to read my story. It's my 18th birthday and I attended my first class at medical school today...I'm in a huge class of about 250 people and the lecturer asked for someone to come to the front and answer a question based on what we just learnt about at the end of the lecture...The class seemed quiet and intimidated, it seemed no one understood much about the lesson, myself included. I gathered the courage and got up to answer the question. My heart was racing but I tried and failed miserably... The class laughed at me but I wasn't embarrassed. I felt better...The lecturer told me to see him after the lecture was over and he applauded my courage. I'll go on with this kind of mentality for the rest of my days. You inspire me, Doc🙌🏾

Just wanted to let everyone here know that nothing comes easy at all, however NOTHING is impossible. Nothing. I do however think everyone needs a certain level of brains to qualify though obviously you don't need to be a genius. I am far from being one and don't consider myself to be super smart but I'm not "eh" either *I hope*. Bottom line is, if you're super smart, you'll be studying less than your peers, if you're of average intelligence, you'll have to compensate with extra studying. Both routes will get you where you need to be. Best of luck to everyone reading this, dream big. ❤️

And I don't always understand something by just reading something once. I have to read and hear something multiple times before it clicks plus I have a learning disability. Many times I felt like I wasn't smart enough. I am taking my intro to anatomy and physiology class for the third time. I withdrew from it twice because I felt like I was going to fail it. And last year my grandma passed away. So I am tackling it again. And I can't give up. And I don't have a high GPA either. I think the med undergrad option should not exist. Even if a 17yr old is smart enough academically to get into med, they should have at least 3 years experience in the real world before going into a career that heavy and where they are responsible for peoples lives.

Aside from the obvious, about not needing to be smart to be a doctor, your co-premise is also that you don't have to be smart to be in college. As you said, college is full of smart and brilliant people, but also has people that just ended up there, either from a parent pushing them there or by some other circumstance. Like in my situation, I have a college scholarship just for being a veteran, and I'm as dumb as a rock! But your view makes me realize that "hey, I went to college!" is not an adequate defense when somebody questions my intelligence, since "not-smart" people end up graduating college, too. Still, thank you for your video. : )

@linisyakashima33964 жыл бұрын
What you say actually isn’t true. Intelligence isn’t earned by some genetic gene, it’s by hard work. That’s intelligence. You don’t become smart because you’re born that way. You get it through hard work, even if you work faster than others. Anyone can be a genius, but only few that accept the challenge can be a true genius. Hard work makes you intelligent. Many people that others thought that weren’t ‘intelligent’ got through medical school with flying colors. Their trick wasn’t being intelligent, it is hard work. That’s what makes intelligence. If you’re saying that you have to be intelligent to get through medical school, then I hate to break it to you but that’s not how it works. Yeah, it might seem like it works but nope. You have to retain, reinstate, and recreate what you learned. Intelligence is being able to learn something above average, not retain.

As a former college and career counselor, from what I’ve seen of students w low MCAT scores, preparation “might” determine degree of success in becoming a medical doctor in my opinion and experience. Foundational courses in: 1. Biochemistry 2. Anatomy & Physiology 3. Physics 4. Organic Chemistry 5. Biology 6. Calculus amongst others such as statistics Mastering foundational courses or not; can be and will be a deal breaker for “some” students in getting into medical school in the US from what I’ve experienced. Many obtain MDs from schools Caribbean schools or other due to differences in standards & requirements for entry & completion in my opinion.

I agree. I'm not a doctor but in college I as able As in very challenging exams. And when I wasn't As, I wasn't happy with myself. And I wouldn''t call myself a smart person. I was a lot more mature, determined and hard-working than my High School years.

Hey Dr. Webb! For a future video can you talk about your high school and college life socially and academically? I’m a high school senior who’s not doing too good academically. Your tips have been helping me out a lot and I was just wondering if you can give us some tips for upcoming college students who want to pursue medicine.

Can someone help me choose between Medicine, computer science, and accounting/finance. I’ve always thought about being a doctor but always thought I wasn’t smart enough, after watching all these doctors on KZbin I’ve noticed that you don’t need to be a genius and that a good work ethic will help you more then being naturally smart. I’ve had one brain surgery and 2 spine surgeries, my most recent surgery was a spinal fusion and a VBT(braces on your spine) and the surgeon that operated on me had inspired me a ton. He created the surgery himself and is 1 out 12 surgeons that do the procedure. He also was in the military then got accepted into Harvard med school. When I think about doing computer science, accounting, finance all I can think about is being doing a boring desk job just so that I have the potential to make a lot of money. But when I think of medicine I think about helping saves lives like my doctors did, and knowing what makes a doctor a good doctor or a bad doctor I would be able to help people a lot better because Ive spent a lot of time going to doctors appointments. My dream job would be to become a pediatric orthopedic spine surgeon or some other pediatric doctor I’m just scared I will get burnt out and then be 300k in debt with no other jobs I could do. Can you guys help me decide if medicine is right for me. I love the idea of being a software engineer but I feel like it will be to boring for me. Also with Biden becoming president I’ll pay a ton in taxes and med school prices will go up so I’m not sure it’s worth the risk.
