In October 2015 I moved back to California, quit my job and cut off all my hair. Then I turned 50. Mid-life crisis much? I wasn't happy with where my life was going and I wanted to start over. I rescued feral kittens. I let my hair go gray. I started a KZbin channel. I made some TV commercials, acted in movies and a TV series. This is about finding the courage within yourself to make the changes you desire. Episode 1 in a series about women who have started over, embraced change and improved their lives.

Monique Parent You are filling a void. There are a lot of young women on you tube telling about their life and talking about being independent, but there are not many women who would humble them selves to tell the truth about what it is like to live on your own and figure out how to survive and shape your own life when you are older. Problem is there are many women that are in their 50s and 60s who's husband have died or they are divorced, or their children live far away, so they are on their own trying to refigure their lives out. I really wishing you the best and hope you continue to be prosperous from your You Tube videos/ blogs. It is very refreshing, keep it up. One of your followers😘 I really hope you are living healthy because you deserve it, but what makes you successful is sharing the good and the bad. I am interested to see your videos when you turn 60 because I still think your type of videos will be helpful and will be needed. 👍🍀‪. The issues you talk about are the things that most younger people think you should have it all figured out by the time you are 50, but the truth is everything is changing with your body aging. Many women this age are trying to figure out how their make up, dating, eating, exercising and other parts of their life can be adapted and reconfigured to survive and most importantly be enjoyed. You are a beautiful person inside and out. Thank you for being you on You Tube!

Yes thank you I’m glad you are doing what you love. I lost both parents. I have a grown Son. Yet we are not connected. It saddens me yet. It’s his choice. He has his family. So I watch KZbin. To have a Social life. Thanks for being so honest. I admire truth. I can do something with the truth. Lies I can do nothing about. 😎

O--M--G!! Nordstrom sales are nothing compared to the KZbinr's that show off their new Ferrari's and there was on fairly successful guy that bought his mom a MILLION dollar house!! There's another girl that's 24 that just paid CASH for a custom built 4-door Jeep Wrangler with a removable hard top!! Lol! Then she did a few videos where she had like a hundred Fenty by Rihanna boxes set up as her backdrop. And, about a week later she was just talking about life, in general and was complaining about how she has so many Subscribers that direct message her and tell her how big of fans they are and go on to tell about people asking her for money or to help pay for their honeymoon, etc. And, she goes on to say that she doesn't have a lot of money and she certainly doesn't have it to give away to people that she doesn't even know!! Well, while I agree that it IS a little tacky to ask your favorite KZbin personality to pay for your honeymoon, I also think that if she/he weren't SO in-your-face about what they're able to buy from these SAME FANS that watch her videos, then she wouldn't have this issue. I am SO glad to have found you, Monique, because you're my age and have lived "that life" like I have and aren't afraid to be honest. I also SO ENJOY the fact that I don't have to constantly stop your video and look up what a word means on Urban dictionary!! LOL! My mother was listening to your videos with me and she said that I should purchase a camera and start my own channel. I told her that I have been thinking seriously about doing exactly that for several months, but I've gained so much weight due to my health issues and having been on a medication that has made me gain a LOT of weight so I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable doing it. But after hearing your stories, I think I might actually have something to add. From trials and tribulations to starting over more times than I care to admit, you may have just given me the courage to share my story. Thank you both for this video!! Desiree

Cindy Staff - OMG, that blasted Nordstrom sale or the damn VIP sale, etc., etc. I can't, and won't do any type of haul, I am not into conspicuous consumption, nor do I have the money to do so if I wanted to. I have stopped watching haul videos, they anger me and I find them so needless. I can't even watch my favorite youtubers show off their hauls unless it's from a thrift store because you never know what goodies they found there.

I've been there Monique and am right now, at 59. No one understands the sorrows until they live it. It's been alot of hard hard work, struggles and prayer, and that's what I'll continue to do. If your young, and reading this, please don't get into a relationship, except with God, take your time, and find his steps he tells you to take. Don't learn the hard way.

I'm recommending this video to my Soul Sisters who were victims of domestic violence/financial abuse. These narcissistic men who we finally got the guts to leave, tried to destroy us and our children. Many of us got little to no assets. As in my case, my children and I got the clothes on our backs and a car with no engine. I know women (over 50 age group) with PhD's who ended up homeless due to the emotional abuse. The job market for women over 50 is extremely limited. So, reinventing yourself does become a challenge. Congratulations on finding a way to make it work!

Monique, I am 57. Even though I only have a few grey hairs, I am so inspired by the fact that you have decided to go all grey, change your life, and just be YOU! I have decided to go back to school, and either get my masters degree in nutrition (My B.S. is in Psychology) and become a Functional Nutritional Couch. I have had a year of severe ups and downs with my health, (I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease) and although I did eat healthy (I cook mostly from scratch) I went gluten free for my health, along with many other dietary changes. Who would think that a few simple diet changes, along with some hormones which were lacking) would make such a change in my life! I not only had to relearn baking (crying about pies and cakes not tasting that good) but had to reinvent myself in the kitchen! I am an avid baker, cook, homesteader living in the country in the state of Oregon. I do everything like my grandmother did, bake bread, garden, sew, can food, etc., and when I went gluten free all the sudden I didn't know how to make simple things that I have had years of experience making! WOW! Talking about starting over! But, you know what, I got better, lost weight, got my health back, and felt WONDERFUL! So, although I had to take baby steps, now, I don't even miss flour! I do cheat once in awhile, when I make something for my husband, and take a small helping of pie, etc., but I don't crave the flour dishes I used to make, like heavily sugared cupcakes, pies, etc.! I just don't want that in my body anymore! Now, my idea of a great treat is a spinach smoothie with fresh strawberries, banana, yogurt, organic whey powder, flax seeds, nuts, etc. I have gotten so much more healthy, and although now my husband and I have been going through some other changes, my diet is so rock solid that I don't eat the bad foods when stressed. I reach for the healthy ones, and I am learning to deal with stress by exercising more (I go for long hikes in the mountains where I live with my two dogs) and, I am looking at life in a way just like you said, "Changes happen, and I can do this". I was afraid that I was getting too old to try something new, take some new challenges, and start over. But, hey, this can be done! I am living proof, and although sometimes painful, we will get through this! And, once we are on the other side, hey, we say to ourselves, I like me better! I am happier, healthier, and a better, friend, mother, wife, daughter, etc.! This is life, LIVE IT! There are no do-overs, or re-takes like in the movies! (By the way I have studied acting and was actually in a few commercials, modeled, and in some movie of the week episodes! )So, yes, I know about the biz! And, I must say you are an inspiration Girl! You ROCK! So, I thought that I would just share that with you, and your followers! God Bless, Debbie :)

Haha....what is it about 50? I quit a "good" job and moved to China to teach English. When I got sick and came home, I fell back into the rut of a job I hated for five whole years. I felt like such a failure. But you can start over at any time. At 58 I quit again. It took a couple of years, but at almost 63, I've been living a life I like for three years. So it might not work out the first time, but just keep trying, keep changing, keep growing. Don't stay stuck.

I've decided to let my hair go ALL grey this summer. I'm 48yrs young. I was getting on the bus the other day & the driver said NO! your a senior you only pay $1.00 at first I wanted to punch him in the mouth BUT I said... Well I just saved a dollar so be what it may.. LOL I too packed up my life, left Oregon & moved to Hollywood Florida. It's been an AMAZING experience & the food bank situation just started. I'm OK with that & looking forward to starting my very own KZbin channel (IF I CAN FIGURE OUT HOW?? LOL) I've been foraging for fruits & veggies even plants I find her are just AMAZING I then research everything I find & if there's something good for us? I post it on my Facebook so I have everything I need for future reference.. I've found SO MUCH to make & doing facial mask, making my very own Kombucha which I sometimes ferment a lil longer just for a lil kick like wine.. I have SO MUCH to share I just HAVE to get this KZbin channel figured out.. I'm ITCHING like crazy it's unbearable.. I was surfing & came across your channel last night & I LOVE your silver hair & wigs BTW you've given me a ton of hope just watching this today. Your truly an AMAZING lady.. Thank you for your HONESTY! We can be so humble & full of gratitude each & everyday we wake it's TRULY a mindset & then your really on your way to a much better beautiful life.

I'm actually starting over. I started nursing school after my son had a car accident, he was 16, he lived 27 months with a brain injury before he passed away. While in school I was offered a job with IT COSMETICS, worked through school. I was recently offered a job with Tom Ford, and I made the decision to put nursing on hold and explore this because it makes me happy! I have been nervous, but the thought of enjoying what I do is so appealing. Thank you for sharing your story! I am 51 and starting over. Thank you for this. I have been living scared for 7 months that I will be let go from a company merger. Even though I have not lost my job yet, I can feel the wear and tear of living like this. A few weeks ago I decided I wasn't going to do this anymore. I really like the job I have, The people I work with and I'm not running away from it, but I'm not gonna live in fear anymore of not having it. In the last 3 weeks I have been overhauling everything financial in my life and making changes. I have been starting a virtual assistant online business. Besides financially and work-wise, I have been doing the personal overhaul, too. I found you on KZbin when I decided to stop coloring my hair. Seeing this video today I appreciate your story. I'm right there where you were and I hope to get to where you are. I understand going in the store and not being able to find anything worth buying. I have moved six times in the last 7 years and in doing so I've learned that there are very few tangible things that I truly need. Even things that are sentimental to me I have learned to take a picture of and then donate or pass on to my son. I feel weighed down when I have too much "stuff," now. Anyway, keep sharing and know that there are folks out here listening & learning!

I honestly don't believe it was a coincidence! This is what I needed to see today at this exact time. I understand what your position was being impoverished. I am on disability, have been for quite some years. I had paid for a little house with my inheritance in 2006 however I trusted a "supposed" best friend to hold the title to the house in her name and, naturally, she not only stole my house from me in 2007 but also when I was moving, she and a load of friends went into the house while I was gone and started stealing everything else. Needless to say, I came away with no winter coats, my sewing equipment stolen so I had no alternative method to earn extra money and personal mementos such as my children's teeth. She got away with all of it too, through perjury in court. Currently, I am 1 month away from my home being paid off (I live in a trailer) and will now be back in a position so I don't have to worry so much about being able to live month to month. I am even getting ready to buy a car in the next few months. The parable is that nothing lasts forever, not good times, not bad. You have to have the emotional fortitude to get through the bad times. Even though we may hate asking for help, we must at times. Thanks for sharing!

I've been there and it is scary but it can be done. I quit a job in 2002...made a deal so I was able to survive for 2 years but then my daughter got sick, like "maybe cancer sick"..and we had no health insurance. It depleted my savings (why I am an adamant proponent of ACA). And then because I couldn't find a job I was about to lose my home. I humbled myself and a friend loaned me one mortgage payment and I paid her back in two payments. In 2004 I took a job I hated... BUT WE GOT THROUGH! That job ended and I got some consultant work on the suggestion of a friend that got us through another 7 months and through that and a friend's suggestion I got a stable contract. Now I grew up poor so I knew how to live with nothing but it was depressing after a B.A. and an M.A. and while raising my daughter to live hand to mouth. The contract lasted for 3 years until it lead me to the job I'm in now which I've had for almost 9 years. It wasn't easy. And thinking back now there are other things I could have done to ease my situation (like sell makeup or some other entrepreneurial enterprise). I didn't even know about KZbin then. I did learn always have more than one stream of income...so even with my very good job today, I sell makeup on the side. You did 'good" Monique and thanks for sharing your story. (Btw the biopsy found nothing...even though all the tests showed something...it was a miracle...my daughter is healthy but when I sit with her I always touch her scar she says. I think I want to make sure it...what ever it was...doesn't return.)

You are lucky that it turned out okay. I do have cancer, leiomyosarcoma , to be exact, and I am lucky to be Alive for the last few years. I was diagnosed 2 weeks after I got married to my husband I love and adore but this was not fair to us or our relationship, or for him, as he lost a wife to cancer in 2005. I never wanted to be a person to leave in intentionally or because cancer decided to steal me away. We are fighting everyday for me to be alive. I’ve had a year of chemo, I’ve had so many surgeries. I’ve lost count, radiation, immunotherapy, lost 1 lobe of my lungs, had a brain cancer surgery very suddenly last April after I was feeling dizzy and off balance and then slurred speech. Cancer, cancer, cancer, I keep fighting this cancer in most areas of my body.. I know what Gamma KnIfe Radiation Surgery is now and I hope to God that has covered my brain and left me cancer free. I have so much to tell to the world and to my family if I were not here so KZbin could be a wonderful way for me to do that. It’s all such a struggle.. leaving to see my doctors soon and I hope we have the funds to have for a hotel for the time in Houston at Md Anderson. My pain keeps me from doing so much right now.. my husband and my family are there but we are all living in fear now.

I "found" your channel while scrolling on KZbin b/c I was looking for make-up tutorials for middle aged women, like myself. After finding your channel, I am SO inspired by you. I don't know your whole story (because hey- we *all* have a story, right?) but you are amazing. I look forward to getting caught up on all of your tutorials/videos and becoming one of your thousands of "fans"- thank you for making this video. I think a lot of us who are middle aged find ourselves "starting over" for whatever reason(s), but there are very few people out there who are humble enough to reach out to the public and say "hey- I was in your shoes- and you're not alone, and you CAN do it." So thank you, Monique!

You saved me. This video is exactly what I needed I was just laid off after 19 years at 1 job about a week ago. I've been cleaning and purging my house of stuff/clutter, because it's the only thing I feel in control over at this point. I have no idea if i'm going to lose my house or not. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I'm crying as I write this. I've been a wreck and no one in my extended family gets it as I'm single, middle aged and terrified of how to keep going. I was washing my bedroom blinds with bleach and water less than an hour ago, cleaning, painting and organizing my linen closet because just trying to sit and relax is impossible with so much worry.

Wow, such honesty is hard to come by! Cheers to your courage, Monique. I started over also at 50, up and moved , sorta reinvented myself. Found you by accident really when I was looking for skincare for my now aging face, seventeen years later. I notice that the you tubers in my age group seem to be caught up in lots of material stuff with a seemingly endless supply of money. It is hard to relate. Now I am semi retired and it seems like I need to do another major change. Figure out the last chapter. It's a little harder now with some health issues but I am a work in progress. Thank you for sharing your life experiences. You inspire. Your beautiful spirit radiates through and shows up in your sparkling eyes.

Inspiring. At 52 I channeled my lifelong passion for fashion - especially resale and vintage clothes - into a KZbin channel. It's my creative outlet. I have a day job that pays well but doesn't fulfill me. My channel doesn't make money and has been very slow growing but I've learned so much and am having so much fun and feel much more fulfilled. I don't know where it will lead but watching this motivates me to keep going!

This raw and honest revelation into starting over that has touched and inspired so many people. Most of us do not have the courage to make the changes that you made in your life. Thank you for being such an inspiration Monique .

I'm 53 and have been wanting to make a huge change, which would mean giving up security and starting over with absolutely nothing. I know that this video was made a year ago but it's still just as fresh as the day you made it! Thank you so much! I am a 67 year old grandmother of five grandchildren, 3 children. I have started over when my husband passed away 4 years ago. I'm just now getting on my feet and feeling confident. I have only my Social Security and a part-time job (which I love!) I don't look my age (people who do not know me think I'm 50 or less)and I'm having such fun trying makeup I didn't even know existed! You, my daughter (30) and Ipsy (makeup samples) have really helped. Your pep and positive attitude are precious :-) I am truly rediscovering who I am, and it's a lot of fun.

Girl, talk about mid life crisis, being broke, my kids are 24 and 19. I have been in such a deep dark DANK depression the last year of my life has been pretty much living in my own world of compete and utter self loathing. And moving to Los Angeles was also my humbling experience. I was so stressed over money, I ended up in the hospital! I'd made good money back east and found L.A. to be almost impossible to make a living. It was the hardest part of my life, but it's a lot better now. Your video was very incouraging and gave me a little hope. I'm 51 years old and I have to go to the unemployment office to file and it's pretty scary. I live across the street from the school I worked at for so many years and I'm feeling very depressed, scared, sad, all kind's of emotions going on but the big question for me is what now?
