Thanks Jimmy I found your channel last summer when I was waiting for my 18" bartlien barrel to do exactly what your channel is all about. The only criticism I have of you, actually my wife's is costing me money by inspiring me to get some gear I didn't know I needed. Also for leading me to train with Joe last year, and later this year, and being a part of the reason I found my passion for precision shooting and scoped carbine.

I've got my SPR running just the way I want- soft shooting, 18" barrel with rifle length gas and amazing, consistent sub MOA accuracy.... the only thing I want to rethink is the scope. My SPR is actually my go to gun if I had to bugout, leave on foot, only grab 1 gun and ammo (otherwise, if its homestead defense (not home defense), I'm grabbing my AR-10). Ive also got a great 16" upper, but, I'll take the 18" in SHTF.... My SPR has a match grade heavy fluted barrel weighing almost 2 lbs, so its a tad heavy, but I like the consistent accuracy that comes with the weight.... and the extra velocity... All that being said, I want this gun to be able to identify threats out to 500 yards and make precise shots out to 400 plus yards... and i definitely need to handle surprise close encounters if necessary (15 yards in or so). Ive got the plx-c 1-8 in my cart, and I'm so close to buying it.... But, Ive already got a good red dot on an offset Arisaka and I'm contemplating using that with a quality 4x16.... My gut tells me to go with the 1x8, but, I really appreciate the magnification of a 4x16.... a 2-10 , to me , is an unflattering compromise. Can the 1x8 give me the magnification and precision i want out to 400 - 500 yards??

Precision will be a combo of shooter, gun, ammo, and optic. The 1-8x plx-c has the clarity and could have enough magnification, it just depends on you, gun and ammo at that point. A 2-10 is meant to be a good compromise, but could be ideal for your requirements especially with your rds for 1x. But magnification is king for pid, I would say see if you can find some optics to look through at a shop or range. Also, magnification can make up for some lower clarity glass. There are people who rave about primary arms glx 2.5-10x and shoot those out quite the distance.

If i was starting over. IMO Get gun and optice in you budget! Your new, you are not great you dont need top of line gun. Scope i would spend more than you think. 22lr Conversion bolt with few mags. Buy case of 22lr ammo that shoots good. Shot smaller target at a scaled range to work with 22lr, everyone only seems to 200yard range to work with. Fill your sock with range sand if you dont have a bag Kestral is key to getting 1st rounds hits Set up 22lr and 5.56 profile and dial them in.Can also jsut use note pad and keep note Use your phone as a stage timmer Put tape on you gun with the come ups/ down from 22lr to 5.56 this will also tell how well your scope tracks. I’ve been building SPR for about 7-8 years now. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on optics to start out. $300 vortex strike eagle is good enough. Spend the money on barrel and ammo. I also started reloading as a result. What people don’t realized is can’t shoot a target rifle with cheap 55 grains to get the desired groups. I only shoot my hand loads 77grains SMK with cci br4 primer and vitahouvi n140 out of all my SPR with each rifle has its own specific load. Spending too much time chasing accuracy.

Switch out the barrel to a stainless steel 20 inch from BA. Disappointed again. Went with WOA SPR profile barrel. With load development, I can achieve one hole with 5 shot group at 100 yards. I have also tried CHF barrel from FN and DD. Don’t do FN but found 14.5 CHF barrel from dd is very accurate. With drop of 200 in FPS about from my 18 inch WOA. Building a noveske 14.5 ss barrel next.
