Starting Problem Dodge Journey 2009

Been there, done that. Very dissapointed with Dodge, have to put the gear in Neutral and have my foot on brake when turning the ignition key for it to start. Before figuring how to start it, it left us stranded a couple of times. Someone​ needs to file a class action law suit against Dodge so they can pay us all a settlement. This might be a grounding issue causing the starter to not get power. Either clean the chassi ground connection in the engine bay or connect an additional ground wire from the chassi ground connection to the engine block. Starting in neutral will also sometimes be the solution, the reason being that the Neutral Safety Switch may have to be replaced.

Check if it's getting signal at the starter. The small wire. Make sure you clean it and try again

There is not a cookie cutter's equation concerning this malady with this model. I suggest that you make sure that the recalls for the ignition switch / key are up to date. I also would like to have you note that the anti theft system can easily interfere with the successful starting mechanism. Make sure that you unlock all the doors from the inside then try to start the vehicle. Make sure that any situation that would compromise a breaking into the vehicle has been investigated and corrected. The vehicle should start under suitable and manufacturer's conditions.

I bought a 2009 Dodge Journey SXT in 2008 as its introductory model. This car was a nightmare. Had this same issue with not starting. Also had problems with alarm system. Electrical issues as well. Within the first year I had to replace the rotors twice due to warping, replaced by Dodge at no cost to me of course. I eventually bought aftermarket rotors to handle the weight of the car. This car spent so much time at the dealership for repairs even the service advisers were irritated. This was by far the worst car I have ever owned!

the problem is couse buy the digital transmission rage sensor on most vehicles it's called a neutral safety switch on theses journey they all go out eventually its job is to not let the car start in any other gear other than Park and neutral and for some reason it's not letting the car start at all unless in neutral sometimes the problem can be solved by just adjusting a spring but if not the part is $45 it's on the outside of the transmission hope that helps

Our 2009 does this every now and again. Tap the shifter to make sure its always in park. Every time we do that it will start right away.

My solution was wiggling the shifter. I came across that solution one day that I was pissed off at that problem and I noticed that from then on if it did not start - move the shifter and it would start right up. These vehicles might be nice to look at but not own one. I have had multiple problems with this vehicle. One problem after another once it hit 12,400 miles. Best of luck to all Dodge Journey owners.

My daughter had the same problem...dealership thought it was the starter, they put a new one in but next day same problem...they did more tests and said try putting it in neutral...finally they called to say they know what the problem is...Transmission Range Sensor...so now will keep you posted so far so good

Heather Hopkins Is the car still working? If so, how much did they charge you for the repair of the transmission range sensor? My dealer is telling me it would be nearly $500 because they have to drop the whole transmission out of the car. Trying to figure out if I'm being taken for a ride.

Just replaced the starter 2 days ago and it happened to my 2010 Journey this morning. Putting it in neutral doesn't help either. I had an issue with the ignition a couple of years ago which Dodge replaced under a recall. Worst car I've ever owned.

This is a trick to start it: Turn the key just to the on position, move the lever to Neutral, and then start it

That's if it's the safety neutral switch is going bad. Some have a grounding problem solved by new ground strap attached to the block. Some have a 15amp Inline fuse blown in a fuse block under the passenger side trim, & some have corroded wires due to poor battery placement.

couple taps on the solenoid with a 1x1in stick through and beside the intake manifold and it starts right up, I am having that problem , a wooden toilet plunger stick will work too, dont hit it hard and dont hit the wiring, may be a good idea to replace the starter and solenoid but doing this will get you out of a jam.I got 15 good starts, then i had to tap it for a few starts, i was amazed at what my mechanic friend showed me , he said carbon sediment builds up on the contacts and thats why that happens.

DONT TAP THE SOLENOID !!!!!I found the real problem with mine, here it is ! there is a wire connector on top of the solenoid that absorbs heat from the engine, if you move the air intake hose reach in and wiggle the wire it will start right up, occasionally i would have to do that after cold engine, but i havent had to mess with mine for several months now

Had same issue and chased it back to the TIPM or fuse box under hood. Problem can be found where main red power cable from battery connects to post on fuse box. Post gets loose and makes poor connection. All lights and things will work just not enough power to start. Take fuse box apart and re attach post. Only the WIN module if no light on dash appear. Also dealer will not find codes when scanned due to battery connection won't through codes

I have a 2010 Dodge Journey and I have the same issues. I have brought it in several times for the random no start problem. I have paid for 1 software update which niether the manufacturer warranty or Extended warranty covered and it still did not resolve the issue. My suggestion to you is to get in touch with Chrysler and file a complaint. With enough complaints Chrysler will further look into the issue and possibly recall who knows how many cars. Good luck!

I had this problem with mine and it was an easy fix. On the starter motor there is a little earth lead that is attached to the starter by a spade connector. Try wiggling this about and then try to start your car. The connector is a bad design and sort of clips on the spade on the starter. I changed mine for an old fashioned slide on connector and have had no problems since.

I had the same issue dodge couldn't figure it out ,but I did I replaced the intake manifold cause it went bad on me as I was checking the wires I found that the wire for the starter solenoid the top one wasn't making a good connection I removed the old connector and replaced it with a better one. THAT WAS THE LAST TIME I HAD STARTING ISSUES.

Did dodge ever find a fix ? Our car has been with Dodge no less than 13 times and they can't fix the problem. Bought new in 2008 (2009 journey) had this problem exactly since the beginning. Here in Louisiana the lemon law is awful. Any other state, they would have had to take this piece of crap back.

Bought an 09 journey rt used last June with 110000 miles and have had no problems with anything mechanical so far. The only problem I did have was the wheel cracked and was leaking air from the tires. This was 110% likely to be caused by the shitty Michigan roads. I really like this car I hope I don't have any problems like this.

Just got the same problem last week. -2°C outside and it wouldn't promise at all, the prob was the starters solenoid steering connector that was oxidized. Some sandpaper and wd40 and prob was fixed. 😊

I've been told the battery is fine & diagnostics been done & everything is ok. It seems to be a common problem but whats been done to fix it. I have the same problems with my 2009 Journey. Problem is the shifter might not be completely in the "Parked" position. I usually have to move it over a bit and lightly slam it over into parking position. Then it starts.

Neutral Safety Switch problem. The car has a sensor that looks for the car going through Neutral to park when shutting it down. It doesn't always sense the transition. What I found is that if you run the gear select all the way to Drive and then back to Park, it will start after that. Maybe switching it only to Neutral doesn't actually make the transition. Try just going all the way to drive and back to park. Ours did that and left us stranded a couple times. After we figured it out it did it a couple times more and going to drive then back to park worked. It hasn't done it since. Now we're getting an 0205 #5 injector circuit open code every time its hot when we try to start it. Dealer changed PCM, then a patch pigtail on the injector harness and its still doing it. When the code is thrown it shuts down the #5 cylinder and misses, continuously. I think Dodge makes pieces of shit cars and their technicians don't know how to properly troubleshoot root causes. Thats why I drive a Ford. But I still have to work on the wife's car :-(

Its a security shutdown... if you get liquid/debri on the key or the comp reads it wrong when trying to start it, it will shut down. Solution: Pull up the hood and there is a reset button to the left, push it down for a moment and it resets the system. The car will then start. If not you could have low cranking amps, an alternator or starter problem. You can get a free readout of all these at advanced auto.

I thought there was a disruption in the connection from the key fab to the ignition but i guess that's not the case seeing this guy has a regular key. Anyhoo, Dodge screwed me on the recall for the win module last spring. Wouldn't refund the replacement because I didn't almost die by having it stall while I was driving! Run 10 gauge hot wire to yellow or red ignition switch harness wire to starter run relay in pin 87 and put relay back in it will start no problem.

Looks typical of a bad range sensor. If you can shift to neutral and start it then its a bad sensor. Once the sensor goes out then it will not start in any range selected.

That's why you don't buy the first model year for a car. 2009 was the absolute first year the journey was put on the market, so of course there's some "glitches" that must be worked out. Next time you buy a car drive a more seasoned vehicle like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4-4. A bit of advice.

Bought our dodge journey in March and started having the starting problems the very next day. Dealer we bought it from says they never heard of it. Anyway we took the car back and insisted the dealer sort it. They said it was the Range Sensor, changed it and touch wood, has started every time since. So if you're having this trouble get the range sensor changed. It should only cost around $100 or so.

They switched it out yesterday and since that part was recalled on my vehicle I didn't have to pay. BUT my car is in the Shoppers Drug Mart parking lot as I type this because it won't start.

Yes , I added an extra grounding cable , works much better . Once in a while when it dosent start we either: wiggle the shifter and try again turn the key fob 180 degrees and try again , or put foot on the brake - shift to neutral - and start in neutral . I assume it is the transmission interlock sensor causing the problem . I did have the starter replaced as it too was defective , but problem still happens about 0ne in 50 or so starts. Ignition recall was done 5+ years ago .

That happened to me had car almost 2 years and this will be third time happened. I brought it in first time and the changed starter cylinoid car was starting fine. About 5 months later it did it again brought it in the dealership seen it acting up so they changed relays was starting fine. About 4 months later which was 2 days ago it did it again but it starts rite away after a couple tries but I noticed when the problem comes back it gets worse and worse every time.

I have the same problem , car won't start. It won't come out of park to put in neutral to try to start it. It got worse, first it would start after 30minutes to a hour. As time went it took longer before it would start. Got stranded 40 miles away from home. Im 72 years old I don't need this shit. It wouldn't start for 3wks. Finally got it home and it ran terrible all the way. I have no money to try to fix it. And from others that tried to fix it the fix don't work ever. Worse car I have ever owned. I'd Sue Dodge, maybe idk anyways, because this is a safety issue. recently in May 2016. Dodge Journeys have been recalled. I have children and this is a safety concern to me. I bought mine 3 months ago shortly after the first couple of days I purchased it, I started to have issues. I hear a noise by my battery everytime I start and shut off my vehicle, steering wheel went stiff before i could try to turn in my driveway.hmm..
