Starting & Running the 1929 Lister Junior Engine

Having made a "how to start" video for Lister's dependable D type, I thought I'd do one for the equally popular "Junior" A type.
As with any product from R.A Lister & Co. there are plenty of variations but this video is just a general guide, and how I run my engine.
This engine was built in 1929 and sold to Reeves of Bratton, Wiltshire (home of the famous White Horse) And most likely would have powered a hay bale elevator.
I undertook an eight month restoration of the engine, despite being in running order the Lister had suffered stuck piston rings, worn valve guides, badly damaged valve seats, and water damage to the crank journals. Everything was cleaned, repaired and serviced including the magneto - a re-paint undertaken and new trolley designed and built to suit my storage and transport.
The engine is 3hp at 600rpm, this one is an A16 with the smaller 3.75" bore - this type was the first to have twin flywheels and "non caged" valves.

Still used in a few shearing sheds in Australia. Had one at one time.Lifting water 465 feet for one and a half kilometres with two inches IBC piston pump.loved it.!!

Relaxing to watch. Lister engines were once the backbone of dairy industry by driving vacuum pumps in many a milking shed. Also, as here, working water pumps, welders and generator sets. These along with their diesel counterparts were simple and very long-term reliable. Some farmers continued using them after mains electricity was available, saying, "I'll go electric when the Lister wears out!" The man usually wore out first! Col, NZ.

Hi from Australia. Originally from Suffolk. In the 50s the Lister engine I remember was used to drive a threshing machine. The reason I’m interested in yours is that its got that open water cooled head like I remember. Haven’t seen many like that on line. Yours is in great condition. A credit to you. All the best.

Nicely videoed too with just captions and steady shots. Let's the story tell itself very neatly. Excellent and absorbing. Thanks! Definitely want to get hold of one of these engines. Have my first Lister D's, one with a H2 pump set, 1944 vintage & running very nicely as bought and another with no compression which I've started to dismantle. It's all complete and has the less common (as I understand) "poppet valve type" crank case breather next to the hopper. Fuel tank is on brackets. (13D, 102572) Please keep the vids coming!

You left the main driven belt so close when reversing rotation (due to crossing) that it seems to me they touch each other during operation. You should find out a way to guarantee no touch between them. Ricardo Buratto

these engines are very simple and not all that well balanced, a pair of large flywheels will help make the engine smoother - there is less "cyclic variation" from the power stroke.
