My addition to the label reading tip: Read the label every time you pick out a food. The manufacturers can and will change the ingredients with no announcement. My experience was with a cranberry oatmeal snack bar that was made with cane sugar the first time I bought it. Then one day I ate one that made me sick. I found the box for that purchase and discovered that the manufacturer swapped out the cane sugar for agave syrup that doesn’t agree with me. I’ve been dealing with IBS for 20+ years. It’s always good to review tips. Thanks for your list of 12.

Wow it's so great to see this! I started low fodmap in 2016 and wasn't aware of these kinds of resources - it makes me happy that maybe people who are starting out can watch and feel that they are not alone / have useful tips! As someone who's been on it for some time I'll also share some thoughts! Some might be more applicable to the long term/modified diet instead of elimination phase. - not just take care of your physical but also mental health. Depends on the person of course, but be aware of what restricting your food does - and find ways to feel free with it (for example by having green options that you can eat as much as you feel like). If you mess up and get stomach ache, it's ok! Don't get down on yourself too much, you're trying and therefore helping all the other times! - I really really recommend the first tip. It's super overwhelming to start and having to think of meals while hungry. I had a sort of week planner /recommended meals from my nutritionist for the first week. - instead of thinking of restrictions / foods you CANNOT eat, think in terms of foods that you CAN. You will feel less down and missing foods, and it's easier to be creative with thinking of what meals to make. - for me it works best to have only one restricted food type per meal when I cook for myself. So I can just make sure to stay orange with that one and then only have green foods with it. Otherwise it becomes complicated and I make mistakes and cooking is less fun. - get Monash University fodmap app!!! Actually this should be tip number one haha. It will save your brain. - just good to be aware that soy and rice are quite complicated in terms of which products you can or cannot have. A short Google search helps clarify things - try to make your fodmap diet as close to your natural diet as possible. If you normally like snacking or less healthy foods as well, make sure you have some low fodmap alternatives. It's a medical diet, not one that is meant for losing weight. - for going out to eat, poke bowl places are great as they often let you choose what you want. There's also more and more pancake places with gluten or lactose free options. In general, maybe let go of the want to go out to eat for the six week elimination phase. After that, calling beforehand could help, and in general restaurants that don't have the meals prepared yet can usually be flexible. That said, some places are quite rude about it. Keep in mind that it's not your fault and laugh about it with your friends. - decide before going to a restaurant if you feel like keeping to the diet and to what extent. For example, these days I go gluten free and no garlic or union - but if there is a tiny bit or garlic or union in for example a sauce, I eat it. I get a little bit of symptoms sometimes, but not nearly as much if I would have let go all the way. And I'm still having a fun time without worrying too much if the restaurant has options for me or if I'm eating something I can't have. - don't be afraid to get creative and flavor sauces etc. Most basic flavorings are actually allowed, including soy sauce, vinegar, rice water, miso, soy bean paste, Sesame oil, all types of herbs and spices etc. In the end its cheaper and you get more variety than hanging onto the one sauce in the supermarket that didn't have garlic. - lastly yes it definitely gets much easier!! Once you're used to it, tbh when I'm cooking for myself I don't feel that restricted anymore. I go to the supermarket and pick up whatever I feel like eating. Yes, the first time I did groceries for fodmap I was in the store for two hours trying to read labels and looking everything up. But you really get used to it and these days I read labels automatically and know if I can have it from the top of my head. It doesn't take me extra time anymore to read the labels (except if I'm looking for something really specific that they don't have a lot of) I'm about to try and make millet milk, as a vegan alternative thats green fodmap. Let's see if it works! Good luck everyone, you got this!! Edit: also the tip about having a one-sentence explanation ready is so good I can't believe I've never thought of doing that. I'm definitely gonna use it!

As someone who has been on different levels of this diet for years these are great tips. Especially pre preparing snacks and lunches. When your on the go, it's really easy to not want to take the time to make something that your belly will appreciate so preparing stuff ahead of time reduces the likelihood you'll eat something you regret later.

Thank you! I have just been diagnosed with IBS and have been trying this low FODMAT diet for a week now. While some of the harshest symptoms have been alleviated a good bit, I am a long way from feeling well and normal. I spend most of my time exhausted on the laz-e-boy arm chair. Being a bachelor has made this especially hard as I have had to work this all out myself while I've been flat out sick. I've been getting disheartened, honestly, and this presentation has helped me galvinize my focus and determination onto getting on top of this. Yours is the first audiovisual presentation I have seen on this subject, and it helps a whole lot! Aside from the actual practical tips, just seeing a healthy looking, intelligent young woman talk about this helps in normalizing it. Thank you! P.S. I have been thinking of pretty well starving myself just to feel normal. The massively restrictive diet I am already on (Though I am only recently diagnosed, I have been cutting things like caffeine, sugar, meat, alcohol and also quitting smoking for over 6 months) has not yet gotten me feeling ok enough to function. Will pretty much starving work, if for only a day or three?

Definitely sushi is the best choice for me when I eat out. I'm not vegan so my other safe choice is bacon, eggs, and potatoes at a diner. I don't eat out much, though.

moldypotatochip I could never eat raw fish in sushi but I have tried both white& brown rice with avocado & mango with either shrimp or immation crab meat Basically California rolls

This is too much avocado for me. I then eat sushi with algae salad as a side dish and not just sushi.

My DR’s list has no potato’s, rice, it’s says pork twice a week only so I’m curious if bacon is allowed (I would say not cause it’s greasy??)

You're so right! When I started the fodmap journey I was thinking that every single fodmap food was bad for me, so I eliminated them all and I felt absolutely like crap😞 we have to test everything on ourselves first
@CarrieGill_TheWildGutProject7 жыл бұрын
So true! And even though it’s restrictive at the beginning you end up with wayyy more foods you can confidently eat rather than cautiously guessing it’s all bad. I’m also learning to appreciate for me it’s not just a single meal but what I eat over several days adding up. How was your Christmas btw? ☺️ x
@AA-nw7hi7 жыл бұрын
Carrie Gill Quite good thanks😊 I made gnocchi with potatoes and buckwheat flour and received a lot of useful gifts, I feel grateful for this Christmas😃 How went yours? 😊

I’m a year into vegan. At first my stomach was so happy from cutting out dairy but recently I’ve been starting to have really bad stomach problems again. Going to ask my gastroenterologist for more testing. Not sure if it’s sibo, ibs, garstroparesis, or something else

If you can have 1/3 banana and strawberries then you could make a small banana/strawberry smoothie, and keep the extra 2/3 banana in the freezer. First I freeze the bananas in 1/3 chunks, and I think frozen strawberries taste better than fresh strawberries. I usually add coconut milk, but any milk will do. I also add a tiny bit of vanilla. Also you could make banana bread with a whole banana, and then only eat 1/3 of the loaf. It goes really good with almond butter.

Glad I found your channel and this video. I suspect I have IBS and getting all the tests out of the way. Knowing all this ahead of time will be really useful if so. Dr told me basically to see if it's any specific food, so I guess a food diary is what she meant. I know I am sensitive to gluten (was GF previously but started eating again), can't have dairy, and many of the things upsetting me recently were high fructose. This diet seems like it would be really good for me.

I just started looking into low FODMAP yesterday very interesting I think I need this diet as I have very digestive issues especially with grains like lentils and beans and all those sort of foods
@julespynovic1762 жыл бұрын
Me being 12 and having to start this diet is jest so difficult since I’m sort of over weight and I’ve been doing this for about a month now and doctors don’t know exactly what is happening to me with my stomach they think I have IBS and that’s what I tell people when they ask about my diet. But still really hard for me to stay with this diet 100% at all times sometimes like my birthday I had a break day but all in all this diet has helped me a little. And it’s true for the first week I felt not good on this diet but maybe even more than a month in it’s become sort of a routine.

Wow thank you so much for this video! I just came back from my doctor who thinks I have IBS and gave me a list with all the things I can't eat during the diet... Oh dear. I've been eating basically everything on the no go list, and I'm trying to eat more vegan/vegetarian lately, which doesn't seem to be the easiest combination. My big question now is: where to start?! Your channel is a really great discovery for me, and you have such a calm and friendly vibe around you, it makes me a bit more confident that I'm gonna be able to do this :) So, thank you! I guess I've got a lot of video's to catch up to! :D

I discovered that I am fructose intolerant about a year ago and lm still trying to work out what I can and can’t eat, my main advice would be to be aware what food items contain HFCSs (high fructose corn syrup), Kellogs corn flakes and Heinz tomato sauce both contain HFCS but do not list it on the packaging.

You have beautiful blue eyes, btw. I am trying to stay vegan since Dec 1. I have made almost 30 new recipes since then and my husband and I have spent most of the month in the bathroom. He really can’t have that at his job! We only have about 5 we we liked well enough to repeat. I have been reading cookbooks nonstop. I can’t wait to get the one you recommended!
