I actually have my first appointment with a gastroenterologist tommorrow... I was diagnosed with IBS last year, by my primary care doctor, who has otherwise basically ignored me. I have been doing my own research and really think I have SIBO and malabsorption. I am very health conscious and watch my nutrition, but just started the FODMAP diet about 10 days ago. I have heard that things can initially get worse, because of the detox. My symptoms haven't really changed except for a lessening of a strong sulfur odor.

Great video! I love how you were straight to the point and very concise. Based on your experience, is it normal to see no improvements, say, 3-5 days into a strictly low FODMAP diet, but later seeing improvements towards the end of the elimination phase? I have a funny story. 2 months ago I switched to what I suspected to be a very healthy diet (kind of like Paleo), with tons of fats, little carbs, cruciferous veggies, lots of fiber, and lots of fermentable foods for building my gut microbiome. I have also always been super gluttonous so I was chowing down almost 4x your normal portion of brussels sprouts, and like 3 fermented soybean servings in a single day. I even did a 4 day fast while stomach pains had begun to onset to purge any folded proteins in my body. Well, the result of this has been excruciating pain throughout the day. Only after doing my own research and learning about the low-FODMAP diet a week ago did I realize everything I was eating was SUPER high FODMAP. Ironically, my path to a healthier diet led to one of the longest and worst ailments i've ever had. Anyway, the morale of the story is to learn about the low-FODMAP diet to help gauge your dietary decisions, and always listen to your own body above any other health advice. I hope people find that story intriguing. Would love to hear your thoughts on my aforementioned question.
@pauletteperea91282 жыл бұрын
Maybe you’ve already found the answer, but for anyone wondering, it is normal to see the results at the end of the elimination phase. My doctor explained that the improvement of one month (if done correctly) could be of 50%, it is a slow and constant process but totally worth it! Good luck to anyone who needs this 🎉

Hello I have been really struggling with the low fodmap diet lost over 2 stone since beginning it and I was under weight before I even started it, I started the vegaterian diet but it hasn't worked out for me personally which I'm very sad about I had to start chicken and pork and fish and Lamb but I feel absolutely guilty about this it's a very restricted diet as I have noticed sorbitol and mannitol and wheat and other toxic substances in a lot of products it's little wonder we have a society that is very ill with diabetes and other things not good at all, I would've found it better and easier with a booklet saying what we could eat instead of what we couldn't it's been really hard going I have tried to return food that I was told to avoid but I became bloated especially with avocado onions and garlic, this has opened my eyes big time to what they put in our food many thanks jacqueline Massie from Scotland 🙏😘

@didititian4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your your comment! Both orange and grapefruit would typically be considered low FODMAP, but as a grapefruit is often much larger than an orange, we would recommend 1/2 a grapefruit as a portion compared to a full orange. Over the day, the full fruit intake would also need to be considered, with no more than 2 portions a day recommended to avoid higher fructose intakes from larger quantities of moderate fructose-containing fruits. I hope this helps to answer your question!

Hi Jack, yes as Alicia mentions, in this video I discuss what foods are low FODMAP. This diet is most definitely not the same as a "healthy eating" diet. It is far from healthy in the sense that it may pose a risk of nutritional deficiencies and lead to a reduction in our microbiotic diversity. It is a therapeutic diet only to be used for those with diagnosed IBS. And even in those circumstances, it should not be used for longer than 8 weeks or so.

That sounds very uncomfortable. Very sorry to hear you are living with this issue. I would definitely recommend that you speak to a doctor about your issue if you haven't already. Usually for an IBS diagnosis, there does need to be a link to bowel habits. The usual IBS diagnostic criteria (after exclusion of other potential gut concerns) are: At least three months, with onset at least six months previously, of recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort* associated with two or more of the following: - Improvement with defecation; and/or - Onset associated with a change in frequency of stool; and/or - Onset associated with a change in form (appearance) of stool. *Discomfort means an uncomfortable sensation not described as pain.

Very useful video... i probably have IBS even though i still need to get the hospital checkup to make sure. But i figured it can't hurt to already start the diet because the waiting list is taking a while and i have all the symptoms anyway. So thank you for this clear information :) ... also "de Zwarte" sounds very Dutch and not Irish.

Glad you found the video helpful. We do usually recommend that you speak to a doctor and/or dietitian when following this diet. Unfortunately while a diet may sound like it is harmless, we know that following the low FODMAP diet without careful management and review can indeed lead to nutritional deficiencies. Also, psychologically, following such a restrictive diet is incredibly taxing, with many people feeling isolated by not being able to eat out as easily, and some. Even developing food fears or further restrictive eating habits. We find that up to 80% of people with IBS can actually improve their symptoms sufficiently by following the first line advice, which I covered in my previous video. These are much less risky diet changes to try. Wow, long comment 😅. Hope this helps. I'm definitely not trying to be fear mongering. Just hoping to be realistic and informative 👍 And indeed, I'm Dutch! Well spotted! But I'm as Irish as they get after living in the Irish countryside for over 20 years 😄

@@didititian Hello Didi thank you for the reply :) I am Dutch myself so the name sounded very familiar... but as i could not trace any accent on you i figured either your relatives had moved there or you went there at an early age. I watched the 2 previous videos today but i have to admit i already pretty much did all of the first line things... My problems have been ongoing for nearly 5 months now... but i only got send to a intestinal/stomach specialist 3 weeks ago and the waiting list is until the 25h of May. Considering i have my own small business where i can not afford being sick this has been a very big annoyance in my life. In the past i have been a chef so even within the Fodmap recommendations i seem to be able to make varied and interesting meals. The only recommendation in the first line though that i am doing the opposite is instead of eating more regularly is fasting for long periods and only eating twice a day... this has actually helped me quite a bit. Anyway sorry for the long reply back and thank you again for your videos.... you deserve a lot more subs/views!

Does honey cause ibs

Honey does not cause IBS, but for some people it can make them more bloated as it contains the FODMAP called Fructose.
