There's always a choice, they could choose to have it fixed right and get another few decades out of it. Half ass repairs always end up costing more then doing it right in the long run. Nothing wrong with old iron, I make my living with it but no way would I allow, let alone request, a half ass job done on what keeps the food on my children's plates.

@ marscruz , i asked for my brothers help in fixing a old ford 1,200 diesel 4 wheel drive , it needs a crank and bearings , the rest of the motor is good , he wont fix it for me without taking the block to a machine shop for re alignment of the block journals . i know for a fact it would last as long as i need it with just putting a crank and bearings in it . if my body was not failing me i would do it myself .

Your brother is right. Do the job right or redo it in the very near future. If the block is not aligned it will be pretty obvious from the bearing wear. New bearings could fatigue the new crank which would could cause it to break at some random time. OEM guys will do some crazy things like mixing and matching bearing halves to compensate for crappy machine work. Other things that can happen is shifting of the block due to stresses in the block. I always take every block to the machine shop to check for cracks and straightness of cam and main bearings. My engines and a customers engine regardless. One thing I do not enjoy is ripping engines out. I might reuse an old power steering pump or alternators because those can be easily changed. A broken crank can destroy the core of the engine. Do the job right and everyone is happier in the long run.

yeah I did read it and that is the problem. You are trying to predict how long it will last. That is plenty of money to just have it break again the next day. You take certain shortcuts and they can bite you pretty quick. If your brother did like you want and it blows up the 2nd day it is driven will it be worth it to you? Is that all you need it for? Usually RPMS takes out the pistons due to valve float. Cranks don't usually break unless they are fatigued. Cranks are just rotating mass. I'd have to completely disagree with your assessment. If the bearings are not aligned straight that stress alone could break the crank regardless of engine rpm. Get the block bored straight and a straight crank with oversized bearings and she should work reliably for some time. Be in good shape for the next owner if you don't plan on keeping it.

LOL where there's your problem. I have never had a crank break on anything I have ever built and some of those people over revved the crap out of them. BUT then again I avoid fords like the plague. My dads the ford guy and seems to enjoy messing with them on a daily basis. Now on another note why bother with it at all if you plan on getting rid of it in 5 years? Tractors actually have pretty good resale value if they are in good mechanical shape. But it seems like you want to take shortcuts and screw the guy you sell it to. Suit yourself. My hats off to your brother though for doing the job right and not sticking some poor soul with a ticking time bomb just so you can save a few peso. Crank misalignment will bust a crank every time, just a matter of time. Never met anyone that claimed to have mechanic experience that would do such a thing to such a critical part of the machinery.

Way back in the 50's and 60's folks didn't have very much and everyone had to rebuild things like this and that is only fix what was needed, cause that is all they could afford. So don't feel to bad at least you know you helping the man out. Which is a good thing! Rich. Its awesome to see you help out a family in need. That shows your the salt of the earth and the Good Lord will reward you for your willingness to help the less unfortunate among us. The owners may find it easier, and possibly cheaper, to put a Detroit 3/53 as they originally had back in it. Those Clarke skidders are super tough, damn near bulletproof machines. They are notoriously tight for room when you have to fix something, like the blade rams. Nice job Rich. 👍

Think of Ether as being an uncontrollable explosion in your engine. The proper way to do it is spray it into the intake while someone is turning the engine over. This splits the ether between the cylinders. If it is sprayed in the air breather and then turned over, whatever cylinder is on the intake cylinder gets all the ether at once and it the explosion forces the rings downward and ends up peening the piston ring groove over. Sloppy rings is the result.

One of the core problems with ether in a diesel is timing of the explosion. You don't have much control over that because a diesel is a compression ignition engine with the injectors providing the timing under normal operation. Ether can fire way too early and the result can be cracked piston and/or bent rod depending on many variables. If you have to use ether you want to use the least amount possible to get the job done. By yourself that is really difficult to do because the engine should already be cranking before you start giving it little shots of ether.

I prefer to do it right, but hey if they are paying me for the work, I'll do it however they want. I was doing a water pump on a Ford Taurus SHO, some junk fell down in behind the timing cover, the guy demanded the cheap way and just wanted to blow it out with the air hose and thought that was so good, well he went to start it and busted the timing cover as well as the CPS, dude wanted to get mad at me and I just smiled and told him "I told you I wouldn't have done that to my own junk, you get what you pay for", he wanted cheap, I gave it to him cheap. People need to learn, I'm not the boss I just do what I'm paid to do, I always make sure and give the best advice, but if they don't want to pay for the work, it's not hurting me.

Something I learned recently on cleaning your hands is get a clean rag like a wash cloth and Pour fresh motor oil on it and wipe your hands clean, it will remove 95% or better of nasty grease and oil on your skin with out even scrubbing hard. I accidentally spilled some Walmart 20/50 oil wiped it up with a rag I had handy and a little later accidentally picked it up to wipe the grime off my hands and low and behold it wiped all the nasty 7.3 grime off my hands all I had to do next was wash my hands with fast orange to get the fresh oil slime off... much easier then scrubbing with a nylon brush until you turn 3 shades of pink.

I am very familiar with this sort of situation with customers. I do what I do to help people out, and I love fixing things so they work right, but sometimes the budget doesn't allow for the right fix, and you've gotta just do what you can for relatively cheap. Rich, you're a lot better man than you know. You're making your bones in heaven. I used to do similar work, and had some nearby older farms with old equipment. WELL, you know when people are sweating out, whether or not they're going to have a good season, and they're running equipment that was obsolete 25 years ago, that when they come to you, you may as well be Jesus to them. You can't say no to them. You may be their last hope to fix that piece of irreplaceable junk equipment, that their lives depend on. I know this to be true, because I got to where I was welding broken implements in my sleep. Replacing a blown hydraulic seal, in 10 degree weather. Or rebuilding an old 8N Ford, a set of bearings and an undercut crank at a time. Knowing darn well that engine needed a complete. About the time the economy was not good in my area, my hands hadn't been healed from the last knuckle I cut, a month earlier, and I was working for peanuts in an auto parts store, full time, in addition to doing the other. Then one day an old friend came into the NAPS store I worked. He was laid off from Caterpillar tractor company, and going to school to get licensed as an aircraft mechanic. He looked at me, and said, " Greg what the hell are you doing working in here" ? It happened at the right time Rich. I'd just had the love of my life move on, and was fed up, and feeling thoroughly kicked, and decided I could do better. Last year I retired after being an aircraft mechanic for 33 years. I still think about those old farmers once in a while. With you it's loggers. Rest assured when they pass on, they be putting in a good word for you.

my first one in a new skidder lasted 12000 hrs. but I ran it myself feed my family and supported everything that was needed to raise a family never give it all its got give it what it needs then I bought perkins drop ins and changed the torque and it pulled just as good with a little 6 banger as it did with the old one on the changed fuel

Erated78 I've heard that too. Seems true in some cases. Some of the old IH diesels are pretty cold blooded like the D361 in the 806 and the turbo' version in the 1206. Most of them I've ever ran needs a good spray in the morning to get them going.

Way back when I opened my shop a friend who had run his shop for years gave me the best advice I’ve ever received. He told me “you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken sh!t.” That skidder is a prime example of the latter. Even if your daddy owns it, as a business owner you have to say NO. You simply cannot charge what it’s worth to fix. You are NOT a 503C ministry trying to help the downtrodden. If you do you’ll end up becoming one of the downtrodden.

I know the type, they'd be at your door bitching you changed a tire and they'd get a nail in it and rode on it for 100miles and want a new tire and rim for free. I work on heavy equipment and they always want something for nothing, not worth the hastle, do quality work on your terms, they dont like it, send it up the road.
