Lucasfilm, you need to give Zahn way more free reign. Don't kill off Thrawn in Rebels, let Zahn go the distance with his character for decades to come. We can get several trilogies of future books involving Thrawn from Zahn still. Let Zahn bring back any character he so chooses into continuity too, even if you are weary of any baggage such characters might bring with them. Even if it's Mara Jade (especially her), Captain Pellaeon, and/or Talon Kradde (and I'd love for him to get his hand on Kyle Katarn and Corran Horn too) as Zahn is a master writer and can take them in new directions or rework old directions to fit your sequel trilogy. He's that good (and you'll love the money he makes you by bringing them back into the fold). Let him lay the ground work for future authors to navigate, let your more unknown writers fill in the gaps. Don't limit him by having future authors mess up his characters either like Anderson did in the 90s. Zahn is right, many you hired of late needed more time developing their own talents. Some had great ideas but struggled translating them to the page (I hate to point fingers but Chuck Wendig is such a writer, still he's better than some past writers of the old timeline who wrote totally pointless stories that did nothing for any character). Anyways I hope Zahn does help you find future talent and they take his advice.

@@keithcostello1388 Well, it's not Zahn doing it. It's Dave Filoni and he didn't really do Thrawn justice in Rebels. Further there's absolutely no indication that we're getting an adaptation of the Thrawn trilogy or Mara Jade (and if we do get her that she's not being shifted to Ahsoka's foil instead of her being rightfully Luke's foil and future wife (and that's a deal breaker to me)). So I'm skeptical but hopeful.

The comparison with Erwin Rommel was really great. Rommel was well respected by the allied commanders during WWII. Thrawn has that same feeling, planning what his opponents will do. Thrawn is playing 3D Chess and everyone else is playing regular chess.

The New Thrawn novel is the best new canon book I've read by far. I hope Mara Jade becomes canon & I'd love Zahn write a book about Mara Jade becoming the emperors hand. Also I'd love to see Kevin J. Anderson come back to write Star Wars books.

I don't see them bringing back a big character like Mara (a really sad story for those who don't know her, not gonna say spoilers but you can guess her fate), morel like rather creating new characters and doing hints at Legends stories/characters, wich is fine. Legends had some cool/bad stuff, but Lucasfilm needs to look forward.

al112v5​​ People said the same thing about Thrawn this time two years ago. Everyone at Lucasfilm and now Disney know how popular she is as people won't shut up about her (and a few others like Revan) so they'd be taking a major gamble bringing in a replacement character. The fandom won't be too lenient with them if they don't pull it off perfectly. Mara was one of the few great things about the old Expanded Universe, even if she wasn't always written correctly (like in Kevin J Anderson's Jedi Academy series). This film franchise is selling nostalgia, so looking back is just as important as looking forward. So I reject the notion that only doing new things and only looking forward is the key, if that was true episode 7 wouldn't be a near carbon copy of the original movie after all. Further bringing her back would just be easy marketing, the old fans would sell to new ones before she even appeared on screen. A new wife or none at all, just can't help them get that kind of marketing potential. Next off just because her story went down one way doesn't mean her story can't go down a different direction in the new continuity, such as Thrawn now having a twist compared to his old motivation (spoilers). For example Mara left Luke twice actually in the old Expanded Universe, once because she felt he was teaching his academy incorrectly (which he was back then), and once which you referenced. So either could actually explain her absence atm, or further maybe this time the New Republic wasn't so forgiving about her past even if Luke was so she couldn't stay. All would work. However if Luke got another wife in the new continuity, it'd just upset a huge portion of the fanbase who'd then just demand Luke meet Mara later and retire with her as his second wife/gf now [that presumably the 1st wife is dead]. Fans love their ships, and Luke & Mara was many people's one true pairing.

If Thrawn makes a live action appearance in a trilogy I would petition Christopher Nolan to write and direct it due to his amazing handling of villains as we have seen in the dark knight trilogy and even if he doesn’t take the story of the Thrawn (legends) trilogy I would just as well be happy if he decides to write a new script along with Timothy Zahn since I believe the character would be in tremendous hands.
