Reason for this re-upload: In theory using movie clips in videos is covered under "fair use" in US copyright law, as long as you only use a few seconds accompanied by commentary. We have never received any complaint from Disney or Lucasfilm about our videos. However, when these clips contain music, even if the volume is low and it is just a second or two, other companies that represent music artists will put a copyright claim on your video for the soundtrack. This sometimes happens to us when a video reaches near a million views. In the pas we have successfully fought the claim, but this time the company who made the claim is refusing to release it, so rather than allow them to take our hard earned revenue, I made a new version of the video, you will notice the clips of Han that did have music are now silent.

It's ironic, isn't? Harrison Ford couldn't have cared less about Han Solo, so he gets his wish fulfilled in having him die in TFA. Mark Hamill on the other hand couldn't have cared MORE about Luke Skywalker, and he gets completely ignored and dies anyway in TLJ.

Luke was killed in the Last Jedi because it would have been morally insensitive to kill off Leia, which was probably the plan - hence the re-write. Comercially the film would've bombed and the world would scream at them.
@RedThorn

BS. Luke was written as killed off long before Carrie Fisher's tragic death. Watch the behind the scenes documentary to see. Plus Hamill expressed how much he hated how they ruined his character much further back as well.
@brianlowe904
@brianlowe904 5 жыл бұрын
It’s actually really common for the old hero to be killed off and narratively the best bet. It’s a new story about new characters and suspense is hard to do when you as the audience can be like “why doesn’t luke just do this?”. His death gives the new characters a chance to form their stories. Watch Logan for an example of a hero dying to give the next generation a chance. Now we can argue that if how he died was done in a way luke would have done it and I’m sure you’d say it wasn’t and I’d disagree. Story wise it was a good choice tho regardless what the actor says

03:32 - I wish actors like Alec Guiness and Ford had realised / would realise the audience these characters have. Yes, they might have played more interesting and challenging roles, but for someone like Alec Guiness, kids of the 80s were not interested in black & white comedies of the 50s. Kids aren't interested in Shakespeare. Obi-Wan caught their imagination and will always be special in a way no other role will. Plus, if you meet these people at Comic Con and they charge over £100 for an autograph, as much as you'd like to get multiple movies signed you have to prioritize and get one signed photo that is most important, and that is likely Star Wars. I'd love to tell Mark Hamill I loved his voice acting in things like Regular Show, but if I have ONE chance to get ONE thing signed I'm gonna go with a Luke Skywalker photo.

I've never understood actors. They want to make a living playing dress-up and make believe, yet they hate being pigeonholed as one particular character. It must suck being so good at your job that your performance resonates long after the director yells "Cut! Print! That's a wrap." Better to be remembered for one particular role than not to be remembered at all. So what, if one particular character you played is the first thing that comes to mind when people hear your name. I'd take that any day over, "remember that guy that played that one action adventure dude? No? Well, you'd recognize him if you saw him."

Harrison Ford had said in several interviews that he didn't hate the character of Han Solo, just that he didn't want to be known for only 'that' character, which is odd seeing that he's also known for 'another' character- Indiana Jones- of which the next film will hit theaters this summer. The difference between Lucas and Disney, is that Lucas wasn't willing to kill off Han in 'The Empire Strikes Back', where as Disney and J.J. Abrams was willing to grant Harrison's request.

For 30 years Han, I mean Harrison, found himself wide awake at night with a knot in his stomach. Fearing the phone call from George where he would request him to come back as Han Solo. It became an obsession, sometimes he almost wanted that phone call, sometimes he screamed at his wife. Then in 2012 he was unable to sleep once again and the phone finally went off. He started to panic, thought to himself what to say, how to best decline the offer. He reached for the phone, took a deep breath and answered "Han speaking". And the rest is history.

In a way, I understand his dislike of the character. He is an actor, he wants to express his art in film in so many ways. Does that sound like the type of guy who would want to be typecasted into a single character until the day he dies? When he wants to do something more but all we can see of him is Han Solo? That has to be frustrating for the man who has already aged, with all due respect.

Laura J. I understand him in a way as well. Star Wars did make him an instant huge star but it also destroyed the careers of other actors, who were blamed for ruining it. I'm talking about the prequels like Hayden Christensen and the child actor who played young Anakin (forgot his name) who was ridiculed and got death threats by hardcore fans, now he is grown up and a mess! Christensen never recovered from the prequels as an actor as well, he is basically blacklisted in Hollywood. When he got the role, he maybe felt like he was the luckiest guy in the world and now I'm sure he regrets it deeply to have taken the role. The prequels also almost destroyed Natalie Portman's career. I think with all this in mind Harrison Ford just got very bitter not only about himself, but what this franchise did to his fellow actors. That's why I think he is so upset and warned Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. I think he took the money for his appearance not because he is greedy, as I'm sure he is financially doing more than fine, but as compensation he thinks he deserves for being typecast in many movies, most of his career actually. As an actor it is incredibly frustrating to be typecast and play similar characters in many movies and it all started for him with Star Wars. But this is just a theory. I agree that Mark Hamill had it worse and Ford saw this as well.

He's the luckiest one!! Carrie Fisher never did anything of note again, other than a few (very) supporting roles. Hamill was so typecast that the only way for him to find meaningful work would be to voice the character of an animated series so people wouldn't see his face. Ford had the Indiana Jones movies come up right at the same time, along with Blade Runner as the video mentions. He also appeared in myriad other films over the years, some bad, some good. He was the least typecast of the 3 by a country mile...and had a career that Mark and Carrie could only have dreamed. So really, STFU Harrison.. take your $20M for minor role in a blockbuster movie and head back to your mansion !!

So I get why he wants to be remembered more for that movie maybe. And I don't know how many movies he did, but it sucks when most of the fan interaction you have is about 3 movies. I bet tons of people like all his other movies, too, it's just that star wars has so many fans still today, because that turned into such a big franchise. Star Wars also has a ton of hard core fans I think.

Wrong... He was working in George Lucas' office, hanging a door and doing some repairs, not working on the Star Wars set. He was hired to read the part of Han and help with auditions. As Other actors read for Luke or Leia, Harrison read the Han part. He eventually proved to be the best Han as his performance beat out all the hopeful actors who formally auditioned for Han Solo.

Imagine doodling a picture on a napkin while waiting for your food, and everyone really likes it for some reason. Now imagine putting your heart and soul into an actual sketch on real paper, but nobody cares and they just keep bringing up the napkin doodle for the next 30 years. That's how he feels about Han. To him, Han is an unmovable giant that towers over even his best roles. He had no passion for the character, yet everything Ford does is almost always overshadowed by him. He probably doesn't feel like the role boosted his career at all, because Han is always the first thing anyone talks about when referring to it.

@Goldenbane

Ford was hardly type caste. He played a large variety of roles, from the great Indiana Jones, to the president of the United States (Air Force One), to an escaped convict (The Fugitive) to a dull boring killer (What Lies Beneath). He played Han Solo exactly 5 times to my knowledge: A New Hope, The Star Wars Holiday Special, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens. That's hardly being type cast. For what ever reason he despised Han and is happy the character is dead. I'm glad that he's happy, I guess, but if I could request one thing from Harrison Ford, it would be that he never ever play Indiana Jones again either. Stepping back into the role was the worst thing for that character, as Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is easily the worst of those movies. The Last Crusade ended things perfectly with a nice bow and there was no need or reason for a fourth movie.

While it was great, it had to have gotten so aggravating where everywhere you went everyone is asking about his role as Han more than any other role. It’s like if you write books and created a great number of amazing series but one got super duper popular and no one wants to ask questions about your other works, only the super duper popular one you made a few decades ago. Honestly, Carrie Fisher did a lot of post star wars projects, Harrison Ford played in numerous other movies...heck, he'd still be a generational icon without Star Wars because of Indiana Jones. Mark Hamill did a lot of cool stuff too, hes especially appreciated for his voice acting work. Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver both had a pretty good pre Star Wars resume...(Including that Coen Brothers' scene where they are both singing and playing guitar together in Inside Llewelyn Davis). I have to admit that I haven't seen John Boyega and Daisy Ridley in a lot of projects before and since Star Wars, but they'll definitely have the chance.

The thing that gets me about Ford is that he woudln't have had the opportunity to do all those other roles he liked better if it wasn't for playing Han Solo. Star Wars (and its fans) threw all the doors open for him and allowed him to choose his future roles and, lets not forget, make a whole lot of money. I have a lot more respect and appreciation for actors who take success their success well like Mark Hamill or Tennant and Smith (from Doctor Who) over the Fords and Ecclestons.
@SSPspaz

I get it. Han's dialogue was often clunky (like most of Lucas' scriptwriting), and I'm sure it sucks to constantly be hounded by fans who only want to ask/talk to you about one role that you've played. Furthermore, I agree with Harrison's assessment about Return of the Jedi, as it was a bizarre combination of childish and adult themes (the same film that gave you ewoks, gave you slave Leia). They absolutely should've killed SOMEONE off in either Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi, Han or otherwise, because it would've added emotional weight to the story. With that said, Harrison Ford needs to show at least a little bit of appreciation. Without Star Wars, he likely wouldn't have gotten hired for any of his other breakthrough roles. The roles of Indiana Jones, Rick Deckard, Richard Kimble, or Jack Ryan wouldn't have gone to Ford if he'd remained an obscure set carpenter.

I agree with you that his death scene is badly written. In fact it I would go much further in saying that this scene proved that the new trilogy was going to suck because it showed that the people at the helm didn’t care about the characters. But I disagree that the character has no depth. Solo is one of the most beloved action heroes all time as well as a terrific flawed anti-hero. I think that maybe he meant that he wasn’t allowed to play the character with as much depth as he wanted to. That would be a fair criticism. However, there is plenty of substance there to build an even more three dimensional character.
