I really don't like the studio model these days of if a first movie or season of something isn't a huge success then the follow ups are immediately axed. Future seasons of TV shows are often when those shows get really good. Look at the Clone Wars for example. If Disney released season 1 of that show they probably would've axed any future seasons since season 1 was somewhat controversial back in the day. We never would've gotten Mortis, Umbara, Siege of Mandalore, etc. So many of the best Star Wars stories would never come to be. That's why the cancellation of a show like The Acolyte bugs me so much. Season 1 wasn't perfect but it was enjoyable and built a very strong foundation for future storytelling. But it didn't meet Disney's expectations (even though they claimed early on that viewership was good?) so it gets axed. I still hope to see that story continued in some format someday but man I wish Disney would green-light at least a couple seasons for their shows before immediately hitting the cancellation button. It's a miracle we're even getting a second season for Andor given that it didn't start with the best viewership either. George Lucas wasn't a perfect director but I do have a great respect for him for actually allowing stories to grow instead of stopping them the second it looks like it's not instantly making billions of dollars.

What? Star Wars was a major blockbuster from the jump. The only thing you might point to was the Clone Wars I guess....which he had already made a theatrical release to support....and he was fully into his "I'm doing whatever the hell I want" phase of life. Note all the OTHER SW projects you don't remember that were canceled early in their lives. Acolyte died because it cost a bajillion dollars and didn't move the needle otherwise.

Everybody’s got opinions when it’s not their money, it’s hard to justify streaming when a show is a success, telling investors you sent tens of millions of dollars into a project with a little reception isn’t really great business. On cable you could have a mediocre first season because you had ads and cheaper production costs, streaming is sink or swim.

Since 2015, Star Wars has become a Christmas tradition for me. That year, Sky Movies had the first 6 movies showing and I spent the whole day watching them. In the years following, I'd go see Star Wars multiple times with my family during the Christmas period. I'd love Star Wars to go back to that December slot rather than May.

Sequels to the sequel trilogy (😅) are one of 2 obvious paths for future movies. The other being Old Republic. The in between stuff needs to end imho, let the characters breathe and leave room open for deep cut books and comics. For sequels, bring back the last trio, let Finn be a Jedi, have them fight thrilling dark-siders (let's say Darth Talon 👀) and most importantly re-involve the political side like the prequels. That's my wishlist.

I love Rey. And whether you like Disney Star Wars or not, financially, a Rey movie or trilogy would be a disaster. Half the fandom won’t pay to see it. Again, politics and values aside, you simply don’t make a movie that will immediately piss off half your demographic. There’s plenty of greatness In the Star Wars universe that they can produce a film that the entire fandom praises together.

I 100% agree with Mollie that Star Wars should give us new stuff. However they have tried and the fans cried foul with the Acolyte. Fans got upset with the High Republic without reading the stories. I would love more Acolyte and the High Republic is fantastic. We need more risks

A lot of people were unhappy with the quality of writing in the Acolyte. That doesn't mean people aren't receptive to new things or ideas. Agree that SW should take more risks in general.

Although the sequels were his idea and the current Lucas regime still possesses the treatments somewhere in their building, I doubt George would’ve executed Ep VIII the way Johnson did, or butchered the landing as badly as Abrams did with Ep IX. The sequels may have loosely followed his treatments, but the end products were the visions of the current regime. Until someone has permission from the Kremlin (I mean, Lucas/Disney) to divulge how they followed or deviated from the treatments, the public’s in the dark about how the sausage was really made.

The issue with the Acolyte is that the casual fan base tried it, and it appears, decided it wasn't particularly good and walked away in sufficient numbers. Considering how obscenely expensive it was, it does feel like it was a no brainer to move on. They made the mistake of leaving many of the parts people were hoping for (getting deep into the Sith, Plagius, Yoda) until a second season they didn't even know they would have.

I do not understand how people can like the half assed, non canonical Legends stuff, especially Visions is so bad. I'm fine when they canonize parts from Legends if it fits into the canon and makes sense. But making Legends content that has nothing do with the original canon, is not officially part of the universe, is just a waste of time.

I would like to see Star Wars taking more risks in the future, but everytime they do that.....the fans find a way to completely destroy the project. The Last Jedi and The Acolyte are two great examples. The Acolyte was being hated by fans before even being released. The fanbase is to blame for most issues related with the franchise today.

Given the success rate (or lack thereof) of announcements vs actual releases, it seems better to assume something is not happening until there are actually trailers. Especially when something is actually removed from the schedule. In the Rey case, I'm just as happy for it to disappear and SW go in a fresher and less controversial (I don't have a better term) direction.

I think the appeal of Star Wars films, is stories of nostalgia, mastery of power, perils and good vs evil. To enjoy any Star Wars film, you have to lighten up. Sometimes its about what fans bring into these shows that ruin the point. The Acolyte is a awesome series.

I don't think they're planning for a trilogy and are just going to drop the single movie first and see how it does. Because it's totally possible that the Rey movie could flop, the sequel trilogy is pretty unpopular & a lot of people who actually did enjoy the sequels strongly disliked TROS - suffice to say the way the ST was handled burned a lot of people to that era. So I feel like they'll just drop a standalone movie and if it does well continue it, and if it doesn't do well they can just save face and say it was meant to be a standalone.

Rey stand-alone/ trilogy: I‘d love to see a proper story for her, slightly removed from the ST, since it felt like the writers of that trilogy never quite nailed her down as a character, I think. Having her as a mentor, maybe even played by a more senior actress. I think they should keep the budget reasonable so the movie doesn’t have to make a billion to break even. The first Shazam! Was a perfectly fine movie and made only 300 mil. and it was okay, because it wasn’t expensive to make relatively.

@fgdj2000 There are so many Episode 9 related Plot-holes, including the whole backstory making no sense, a massive plot-hole where Palpatine took over Rey's body due to Rey killing Palpatine's body. Rey calling herself Rey Skywalker instead of coming into her own unique nostalgia removed leadership. Luke Skywalker giving Rey a whole speech about never tossing her weapon, despite original Trilogy Luke Skywalker defeating Palpatine by tossing his weapon (that change in motivations makes makes no sense at all). The 9 ending made no sense. So they can't remove it from the Sequel Trilogy, yet. Storywise. She is not fit to lead the Jedi yet. And is obviously all Abrams fault and not the actress.
