@UnintentionalSubmarine5 жыл бұрын
Obviously the original intent was to show the ruthlessness of Vader. Failure was not accepted, regardless of circumstances. Hence why we see the utterly insane push through the asteroid belt that clearly results in the loss of at least one SD. Needa is indeed portrayed as a responsible military man, which makes the point even stronger. Remember, Vader is still the main villain in ESB, Palpy is barely there more than ANH. Vader is as yet not a tragic figure, but a dangerous and evil boss. And one of the main storytelling devices is to showcase fantasy villains as irrational and overly cruel. Hence Needa dies when everyone can see he was not really at fault. Btw, that little thing is pretty common too, when the evil boss kills an otherwise competent underling for no good reason.

@sjeason4 жыл бұрын
Not only all that but I feel like the fact that it was this failure specifically that ensured his fate. If he had failed at another task he might have survived, but Vader was getting increasingly desperate and frustrated to find who he now knew was his son and he knew that the Falcon was connected with him. This can be seen as Vader even starts to become hostile to Piett after his multiple failed attempts to capture the ship, even though he was one of Vader’s favorites. So it’s right to say that Needa was in the wrong place at the wrong time, because it was going to be a rough time for everyone in Death Squadron as the margin of error went from Don’t fail Vader more then once to Don’t fail Vader at all.

Well in the Thrawn-trilogy this is mentioned by Pellaeon when he thinks back. Serving on board of the Executor was dangerous, but it was also a quick path to promotion. He was expecting to be executed, but after explaining that he HADN'T moved back from the front line, he was given command of the entire defense of the city. It should have been clear to him that the Falcon might be hiding in his ship's sensor shadow. Now, one could claim that Vader should have thought of this possibility himself, but chance is that this was such a blatant mistake that Vader could not even imagine for it to have happened. All he knew and felt was the force telling him that Needa screwed up big time!

This is yet one example where EU/Legends devalue moments in the films. There really was no need for any underlying story of conflict between neither Needa nor Ozzel. The films portrays Vader as a man with short temper who kills whoever fails his bidding, be it withholding information, like captain Antilles, or failing to complete the mission given to them. We see this behavior already on Tantive IV, and not long after we see it again on the Death Star. Motti was getting force chocked by Vader for ridiculing Vader and the Force, and would most likely have been killed had not Tarkin ordered Vader to release him. And Motti had proved to be a very able officer and held the position of Chief of Navy at that time. It would follow suit that Vader killed both Ozzel and Needa simply out of the fact that they failed him. Also, that there would have to be underlying reasons for Vader killing Ozzel and Needa takes away from the menace behind Vader's warning to Jerjerrod about finishing the Death Star 2's construction on schedule, that the emperor was not as forgiving as him. At the same time we see Vader value talent as he promotes captain Piett to admiral, bypassing any internal policies within the navy regarding promotions. Still, Piett was nervous after our heroes escaped from Bespin, having fixed the disabled hyperdrive , furhter proving that the killings of Ozzel and Needa was down to failing Vader amd that he would be facing Vader's wrath next. That Vader spared Piett seems to be related to Vader sensing that it was meant to be that way somehow, and that he would meet Luke again later, when it was time.
