The Non-Canon Expert looks at how Dooku came to view the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker over the course of the Clone Wars and the Sith Lord's knowledge of his Master Darth Sidious's plans for Anakin, explaining why Dooku didn't fear being replaced by Anakin as the Dark Lord of the Sith's apprentice.
This is a Legends story for Dooku and Darth Sidious with information found in a number of Legends sources, but primarily within "Star Wars: Labyrinth of Evil" and the Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith novelization. I hope that you enjoy it!

He wasn't a genius. The one thing is a trap that other sith are inclined to make. He doomed himself because he changed it to the rule of one. ANd the sith grand plan was never his. He wasn't smart. He drugged the guy who trained him because he was a pussy. He didn't train vader, so he ended up going to the light side because he thought the rule of two was for him. Everything was done for him. He was just a politician given a grand plan on a silver platter and he messed it up because the sith are unstable. He was killed by a jedi. His sith lord decided to kill him as a jedi and not a sith. You think he could have betrayed his master as a sith, but sidious was such a control over intellect guy he got turned on by an instant jedi who could have easily done the sith thing and destroyed him as a sith who he trained for 20 years and was corupted and indoctrinated beyond control, instead making the sith extinct except for outsiders making a whole universe that doesn't exist and nothing happened in order to save the sith and marry sues from extinction; none of which needed to happen.

I would disagree on one point. When Dooku describes a 'Sith Army" he distinctly refers to it as below himself and Sidious. I imagine what he had in mind was similar to what became the Inquisitorous for the Empire in Legends, the Prophets of the Darkside and the Emperor's hands and Eyes. The way he refers to Anakin still as 'Skywalker' and the 'General' of the Sith army below him in the command structure indicated that the new Sith Army would be an army for the Sith not necessarily OF Sith themselves.They would be trained in the ways of the Sith lightly but mostly in the ways of the Dark Side, but always kept below the two main. in that way I don't believe he meant to return to the ways of Kaan and the Brotherhood of Darkness as you imply. However, you are correct in comparing Tyranus misplaced trust in Sidious to Plageuis as both saw that coexistence for a greater purpose was the best way to bring about the vision of stability and order they wanted, the problem was that Sidious wanted everything solely for himself as you pointed out. It is a shame really as Tyranus was actually the best well rounded apprentice of Sidious and certainly the classiest.

While this does make Dooku look kinda dumb, it actually makes a lot of sense. I always wondered why Dooku wasn't cunning enough to attempt to turn Anakin himself, and overthrow Palpatine. But he simply didn't see Anakin's potential. I dig it!

How did Dooku expect the events to proceed, after taking out Obi-Wan? Sure, Anakin has fear and anger, but that doesn't mean he's suddenly going to turn against the Jedi. There's no reason for Anakin to do so, at that point in time. It reminds me of how Palpatine told Luke to finish off Vader and join him. Why would Luke do that? Sure, he might have killed Vader, but then he'd immediately try to kill Palatine, afterwards. He's not going to suddenly turn against the rebellion, just because Vader pissed him off.

Sideous really should have chosen his words better. He needed Vader to help him turn Luke AND make him loyal to the empire. He could turn Luke against Vader after he secured his loyalty. He could have also attacked Vader. Luke clearly cared about his father. He should have used that to his advantage. Use Vader as leverage as well as Leia.

@@mattg2306 to consolidate power and end infighting, which Darth Bane saw as the driving force behind the Sith Order being so unstable and never being able to rid the galaxy of Jedi. Basically they spent more time and energy fighting one another than fighting their enemies. So instead of 100's and thousands of Sith all fighting one another for power, you'd have two real Sith lords overseeing a unified plan to acquire knowledge and power. Then as soon as the apprentice surpasses the master, they murder the master and take on their own apprentice. Ensuring the most knowledgeable and most powerful Sith was in charge. The Sith Army Dooku wanted to start up would bring the Sith order back to containing thousands of Sith, who would eventually start fighting one another in attempts to climb the ranks and gain more power and knowledge.

If all the Sith ‘apprentices,’ I think Dooku was as close to being a true Sith apprentice than Maul or Ventress, etc. I disagree that Dooku should have anticipated his betrayal. He wasn’t as immersed in Sith culture enough foresee it. And let’s be pragmatic here, who really would believe that two people would be enough to seize the galaxy. Seriously. It’s goes against most military doctrine and common sense. It appears counterintuitive on the surface.

It's curious - what if while Palpatine was believing Dooku's acceptance of his plan and captured, waiting to Obi-Wan and Anakin to free him, that Dooku would kill Palpatine, or set in motion events, that if Dooku was was removed, that Palpatine's plan would never succeed. In the great novelization of “Revenge of the Sith,” by Matt Stover, Dooku was meant to surrender to Anakin, and live out the rest of his days in a gilded prison. He would’ve likely been exiled to his home world of Serenno. In combination with surrendering, he would’ve also left the Sith order, making room for Anakin. It’s really awkward that Dooku doesn’t say anything to Palpatine when Anakin has him on his knees. Imagine if Dooku had said something like “But, Master-“ and only Anakin heard it, being confused, but not telling anyone else.

He wasn't dumb or even that evil. He just underestimated Palpatine and the dark side out of the arrogance he learned from being one of the greatest Jedi. The same thing happened to Anakin.

Neither Sidious or Plagueis were Anakin's father. Anakin was created by the Force as a result of Plagueis' arrogance in trying to create life, in essence becoming the Force. Anakin was to destroy the Sith as an object lesson. This is why when Plagueis learned of Anakin, he was frightened.

Ventress even stated this out roght to him in the old comics pre TCW, I forget which issue but Dooku being just so blind never heeded such warnings and when Nute Gunray left behind the mechno chair that gave the jedi a clue as to how to fund Sidious Dooku had for like a few seconds the idea to not tell Sidious and potentially usurp him but he played the role of obedient servant as usual.

There is one other reason why Count Dooku didn't believe or fear that Anakin would eventually take his place alongside Darth Sidious. Pride. Dooku felt that his experience and mastery of the Force, along with his political power and savvy about a great many things would be tremendous assets to use as he had intended to control the galaxy along with his master. He had a lot of elements in his favor he felt that Anakin lacked, along with his perception that the Jedi Knight was becoming cocky, reckless, and letting his growing powers get to his head. Anakin was unworthy in Dooku's eyes, so he secretly rellished any chance he could have in not only upstaging and surpassing Anakin, but to also eliminate him and keep his place secured. Why risk it all for a younger yet unproven apprentice (to Dooku's eyes, anyway) when a man of Dooku's talents could still be quite useful? I could address his old age and perhaps his lack of ambition in actually being the new Sith Lord in charge instead of Sidious, but I feel that pride should also come into play in this argument.

I really like your videos. Count Dooku is my favorite Star Wars Character. But something doesn't make sense. Can you make a video explaining why Dooku trained, Asajj Ventress and Savage Opress to help him kill Sidious? Can that still be worked into the Legends position of Dooku wanting a Sith Army? To rule by Sidious' Side? Dooku Never saw himself as the Leader of the Sith, Dooku just wanted to save the Galaxy from the Corruption of the Republic. And he saw Sidious as his means of doing that. Is it possible, that by the time of Ventress and Opress, Dooku thought he could accomplish his goal without Sidious and thus sought to remove him? Perhaps reconsidering and resuming his role as apprentice when Maul and Savage were defeated so easily by Sidious? What do you think?

Not in terms of power but just as a character dooku is one of my top three favorite Sith Lord's after Darth nihilus and before Darth sidious. Mainly because he was a calm and collected Sith, he wasn't inherently evil. He was just doing what he thought was necessary, he even considered rejoining the light side for a moment. Something neither sidious or Vader would ever do until the end of Vaders life. He really didn't want to kill obi wan and went out of his way not to. In revenge of the Sith we see him carefully place the platform over obi wan after he throws him. Maybe that wasn't his intentions, but I think if he was trying to kill him he would've let the platform fall on its own. Dooku was respectable and feared as a lightsaber duelist which are a few reasons why he's one of my favorite Sith lords.

Dooku was also a legit threat to sidious so he had to trick him as he did plageious no way he could have beaten them 1 on 1 .Dooku was quickly gaining dark Jedi powers and this scared sidious who only wanted to rule by himself .Dooku loved competition he lived for that like he beat obi wan in like 5 seconds flat Yoda couldn't beat him and windu didn't dare test him .Sidious was always afraid of many Sith having knowledge because then he would always have to watch his back .Like a cheater with a guilty conscious he was always conspiring and would end up fearing legit competition from a Sith army that may go mutiny on him .Dooku was always polite so I doubt the Sith army would rebel against him they would thrive . Dooku did know he would be replaced its the timing that he got wrong and I blame the Jedi none of them helped him they were oblivious to what dooku was tellinh them qui gon Yoda obi wan Anakin I'm not sure if windu was asked but the others were .Since they turned him down it through off his timing and had to let things play out and at the end he just gave up like f ... Since dooku had darth andeddus holocron, did he know essence transfer? If he didnt why not? He had his holocron. And if he did, why didnt he use it on anakin after he was defeated?

What if all the with from the clone wasps era including anakin were all alive what roles would they have, sidious woulf be emperor, then I’d think his right hand man would be anakin and then Darth Maul and Dooku would be in charge of army’s and sections with dooku bding more organised and strategical and mauls being one of the most brutal and quickest and then smaller legion under mauls control would be given to his brother which would be big brutes and savage, and under dooku would have like maul and assassin types yet more than capable in a war ventress and another would be a big and imposing forces of grevious, sorry for all the mistakes I’m half asleep and hope you all get the picture

This video also kinda brings to light another issue regarding the clone wars. Yes Anikin was a hero with the 501st and they were sent on some of the “hardest missions” but Whenever he battled Dooku, Dooku never really tried to kill him. And most of the battles, Sidious and Dooku controlled which means they Anikin would possibly never be killed in these battles. So were they actually the toughest missions?

They all underestimated Sidious’s grasp on the dark side. It tolerates no sharing. Even when vader is at his peak, he is still just an enforcer. Sidious never tolerated anyone else calling the shots, so to speak.

Count Dooku in some ways knew that his battle with Anakin wasn't just a test for Skywalker it was a test for himself too, to prove to sidious that he himself was indeed the rightful heir for the sith legacy. Dooku was overconfident he could defeat Anakin, what with the boys uncontrollable emotions and headstrong ways. Sidious was a master manipulator so convincing dooku he was irreplaceable was easy, dooku never saw the betrayal coming..until he heard his master say, " kill him..kill him now.."

I think it should be noted that Dooku could defeat Episode 3 Anakin with ease just like he did with Obi-Wan, only reason he didn't insta beat him was because Sidious told he to do that and he thought Sidious had his back. Dooku was like the greatest Jedi lightsaber duelist after Yoda.

You know what they should do idk if anyone has thought of this but someone should expand on the chosen one prophecy and call it "Star Wars Royalties Of The Force" we all know that Anakin got his powers of the royalty side which explains why his midiclorian count was so high but what if there were different royalty sets other than the one that gave Anakin his powers with the force what if there were different eras were one set would emerge whether it be the light or dark side of the force and dominated for an era then eventually they kill him off someone should do something like that i think it would be awesome

Dooku believed that Anakin was going to be a tool like Darth Maul, while Dooku and Sidious shared the true knowledge of the dark side between. Just like Plagueis and Sidious were the true master and apprentice, and Maul was just tool used by the Sith. I personally believe that Dooku hoped that with turning Anakin, it would push Obi Wan to the dark side, allowing Dooku to get the apprentice he wanted.

Double the price, double the fall. Thinking about Dooku's words makes me laugh. He actually believed Sidious would spare his life and take the risk of beeing exposed by him. Sith are not known for sharing their power. Since Dooku used to be a Jedi master he should have known that. The look on the fools face is priceless and his end is a fitting one for a brown nosing and arrogant racist.
