At the beginning of A New Hope, he talks to his uncle about going into the Imperial Academy to train as a pilot like all his friends did. The Empire IS influencing Tatooine, just not in the sense of it being a warzone or proper military base. At least, not until Obi-Wan pops his head up and gets Han to shoot up the spaceport.

@JeremyCuddles it's actually confirmed by Lucasfilm that Palpatine actually was defeated by Mace in episode 3. Mace Windu has a technique when fighting a Sith that basically takes the power of the dark side (I'm not sure if it's actually their power or something else) and uses it against them. When fighting a Sith, Mace Windu is basically unstoppable. When Palpatine lost his saber and was cornered, he used the situation to his advantage to convince Anakin. All of this was confirmed by Lucasfilm

He may be using Ezra in this instance, and went back on his deal to spare his friends, but he is completely earnest in his plan to share knowledge with Ezra and to teach him his ways. You can even hear a bit of pride in Maul's voice when he comments on Ezra's ambitions to destroy the Sith.

They did, you should look into the first Jedi Civil War in Legends, the Jedi for the most part had no fear of the Dark Side, but over time decided it wasn't worth it, a lot of apprentices and even some masters kept practicing it in the dark and the Jedi decided they would be expelled Because at that point they became enemies to kill on sight and the Dark Jedi were vastly outnumbered, they fled the system to Korriban and moved in with the true blood Sith (species), over time the two cultures became one, with the Dark Jedi taking up the name Sith

I'm not sure how much of it is in the Disney Timeline, but in Legends the Jedi and Sith used to be one order and studied both sides of the Force. However, a group led by Ajunta Pall started using the Dark Side to perform alchemical experiments, creating/mutating life forms and even considering immortality. The rest of the Jedi saw it as blasphemous and a civil war called the Hundred Years Darkness ensued. The Dark Jedi were defeated and the survivors exiled in the hopes they would learn their lesson. This backfired spectacularly as they encountered a species called the Sith who were also force sensitive and took the exiles in. Ajunta Pall and his followers took over the Sith civilization, renaming themselves as the Dark Lords of the Sith and eventually built up quite a few empires that would challenge the Jedi...

Maul’s need for revenge is insane looking back at this, he crawled his way out of a pit he should’ve died, after being restored he got his brother to help him find obi-wan or at least bait him to come, he took over an inter planet just for Obi-wan and killing his girlfriend in the process, he completely avoided a masses war in what ever way just to stay hidden, years later after the rise of the empire he STILL kept on going even going as far as using the help from a Jedi so he could reach his long awaited goal. And in the end of it all, in a desert being exhausted and burnt with only revenge on his mind found Obi-wan. From there the battle was decided and maul died.

I think Maul is a little upset that Obi-Wan survived, since right as he is taking off (3:10) his laughing sounds like a mixture of laughter and crying. Sort of like he is trying to hide his emotions that make look vulnerable. Now I know he is alone, but he spent so long being trained to show no weakness, which would be emotions like sadness, that it might just be force of habit to hide them. I just think that Maul had finally came to peace and accepted that Obi-wan died either when order 66 was given, the Jedi temple was assaulted, or during the Jedi purge, and that finding out that he was alive opened up old wounds he thought had healed, which ruined the putting to rest of his want for revenge against Obi-wan. Now I know that many people think that the "hope" he was looking for was that Obi-wan had survived so he could kill him, but I think he was looking for the hope of making himself untouchable by the empire by having the child of the chosen one, Luke, as an apprentice, one who could rival Vader as Luke would inherit his father's strong connection to the force (hopefully) which we know to be true)). I think that Maul was just so tired of having to be on the run all the time and always looking over his shoulder, that he wanted to find strong force users (like Ezra and then Luke) to help him become strong enough so that if the empire attacked him, he and his apprentices would be able to repel them with ease, making attacking them so terrifying for the storm troopers that none would voluntarily go and that they would retreat after the first couple casualties. Effectively making attacking Maul more costly than it was beneficial, and seeing how Maul doesn't seem to want to draw attention to himself (based on how long he was hiding after escaping from Dooku and Greivious), he wouldn't go and attack imperial bases, as that would give the empire a reason to constantly attack him with everything they could throw at them. Just my take on it, have a feeling that the last part isn't true, but I really think that the first 2 paragraphs might be true. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

We also know (from directors notes) that her mother was present at Maul's defeat and murder of Pre Vizla. However. We ALSO know, that Bo-Katan Kryze, Satine's SISTER, is going to be in Season 3. I am making the following prediction. Bo-Katan Kryze, is Sabine's Mother. She is Mando. She has a Helmet like Sabine. She's Death Watch. And She was present when Maul killed Pre Vizla. Thats what she thinks, at any rate, and the breakdown of this relationship is why Sabine cut ties with Death Watch. However, I am going to suggest that Bo-Katan Kryze is NOT Sabine's mother, although Bo-Katan did raise her to believe this. I am going to suggest that Bo-Katan will reveal (either to Sabine, or to others), that Sabine is in fact, Satine Kryze's daughter. And thus, her Father is none other than Kenobi. But it gets better. Why is this relevant? Why because, it also gives us a way out. The most common theory for the absence of Ezra in the original trilogy (like Ashoka, his fate is a ticking time bomb), is that he is gradually filling the role of Starkiller. He'll form the rebellion, and die in the attempt. An alternative theory though, is that he is Starkiller in REVERSE. He starts out as good, with Kota as his Master, and gradually becomes Starkiller, falling to the darkside. Ezra falls to the Darkside. And he forms the Knights of Ren. Or rather. The Knights of Wren. Furthermore interviews with Filoni he states that when Yoda say to Luke that he is the last of the Jedi he means there are no other living Jedi including Kanan and Ezra. So again your theory does not hold water. Besides Rey would have to be born 10 years after the Battle of Jaku, making Ezra roughly 32-35 years old. So as I said try again. You math does not work.

But Maul, once again like with Savage Opress, chose hatred over caring for someone and destroyed any chance of Ezra helping him find any sense of redemption which led him to his death. Both Maul and Anakin are people driven to insanity by hatred and one motive, ironically both out of hate and love, to do horrible things that eventually condemned their fates. Maul wanted Ezra as his student by his side but threw that away because he couldn't let go of his hate.
