Sam has a great range/level of acting skills! You can see the hatred, and rage in his eyes. He delivered the lines in a calculating manner. I could feel his emotions on the screen.

I love this scene " I'm also a violent man". I think we know Jamie is kind, loving, loyal, but in the books he IS violent, he does the business! He gets it done! This scene keeps the character from the books alive in Outlander.

Best scene in ages! Yes, a good man. A moral man whom Richard Brown did not respect because he considered that a weakness. But he didn't know the horrendous things that had happened in Jamie's life, what made him a man of blood. He didn't know that the only thing keeping Jamie this side of hell was Claire.

THIS is book Jamie. He's not the mostly tamed-by-Claire lion you often see in the show. Book Jamie Is NOT tamed. Don't get me wrong. I ADORE the way Sam Heughan plays him. No one could have played Jamie better. He's made the role his forever. It's the writing and the direction that have mostly given bravery and courage to Claire. Yes, we see Jamie brave in battle and very courageous in saving Claire. But he more readily gives in to her. It is less so in the books. Moving on, this scene is INCREDIBLE! We see Sam's acting chops on display. So coldly & quietly menacing in that James Bond sort of way. You know he's going to kill Brown and enjoy exacting vengeance after all the horrendous things Brown did to his wife and family. I've watched this scene again and again. I LOVED seeing Brown get exactly what he deserved. The lighting, the pacing, the acting by both men - DELIVERED!

Jamie doesn't always go for revenge, at least not for his own hurts; he only kills when a predator attacks one of the vulnerable people under his protection, because in the era he is living, that is the only sure way of making sure that such predators do not get another chance to harm someone. He wanted revenge on Jack Randall for his own hurts but Claire persuades him to not kill Randall so that he can father her 1st husband's ancestor, and Jamie only went after Randall again when he had raped a child under Jamie's protection, and even then he remembered he had promised not to kill, so it was only in the Battle of Culloden, after Randall's brother had fathered the Randall child, that Jamie killed Randall in the battle of Culloden, when the only choices were kill or be killed. The Browns had hurt multiple people too, appearing to enjoy hurting people as much as Randall did. I think of the times when Jamie kills as almost all being in his protector or warrior modes, not in selfish revenge.

This is one of my favorite Outlander scenes ever. Sam is at the absolute top of his game and is genuinely terrifying. The direction is excellent, and the lighting is impeccable in terms of bringing out the most sinister aspects of Sam’s superb performance. The scene in its entirety demonstrates the completeness of Sam’s portrayal of the character of Jamie. This aspect of Jamie is in stark contrast to the benevolent loving Jamie in Episode 7-02, thus totally fleshing out the huge range within this character, as only Sam could do it. I have watched this scene repeatedly, marveling at the satisfying completeness of every aspect of it, acting, direction, stark dark lighting, cinematography, and music. It rivals any movie scene I have ever seen from superb films such as “The Godfather”. I’m very grateful for these experiences, becoming completely enveloped by the superb totality of the Outlander production.

There may be those who think this scene is out of character for our kind and loving Jamie, but it is not. Book Jamie is indeed at times a rather unpleasantly jealous man, and, when he needs to be, a violent man. This scene is reminiscent of Sam’s brilliant eyes-of-death brutally hard take on his line, “Kill them all” in the last episode of Season 5. It is a side of Jamie that Claire is not always comfortable with, as shown in confrontations (screaming matches) between the two of them in Diana’s most recent book, Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone, concerning Jamie’s actions towards Claire’s assailant (Season 5) as well as towards Lord John Gray (see [when it eventually becomes available from Starz]: Season 7, Part 2, yet to come - sometime or other). Jamie also shockingly strangled with his bare hands a Redcoat he actually liked (an act for which he begged forgiveness mid-strangle), when it became apparent that his friend was about to blow the whistle on Jamie and Murtaugh, thereby threatening the family Jamie has taken a vow to protect at all costs; and immediately thereafter, while escaping this scene of a brutal killing to protect and defend his family, Jamie tenderly rescues a kitten (Adso) to take home to Claire. That scene, as with this scene with Richard Brown/Chris Larkin, does not appear in the books, but both brilliantly demonstrate and bring to the show the various dichotomies of the richly complex character Diana Gabaldon created. Sam Heughan has almost perfectly, and actually rather incredibly, captured that remarkable character in all its fullness. Why does this man not have at least three Emmys by now?!? Oh. I remember now. He’s too handsome to be taken seriously as an actor, a perception which was sadly apparent during Outlander’s stunning opening season by a misbegotten pitch to the Emmys voters from a female Starz producer at that time, praising to the heavens Cait’s remarkable portrayal of female strength and then damningly saying that Sam perfectly fits the archetype for a leading man - without one mention of his searing performance covered in blood and sweat, NOT handsomeness, in the finale of Season 1. Apparently people listened to her. Oh. While I’m on my soapbox about Starz, I’m incredibly ticked off that in spite of public pleasantly muted pleas from Maril Davis and other Outlander producers for Starz to give them a go ahead on a season renewal so that they would know what to do with season 7, Starz delayed that response so long that writers were forced to write the season as if it were going to end the show, and then they had to rewrite the whole bloomin’ season to accommodate a late Season 8 (but NOT a Season 9) renewal, throwing a monkey wrench into the entire ending of a series - at a time when Diana is still writing the final book. (NOT her fault of slow writing, George R. R. Martin/Game Of Thrones style, but rather the fault of the bloody network). Am I bitter? Yes I am. The result is endless Droughtlanders and a Season 7 that has somehow brilliantly adjusted to the mess, and is superbly acted and produced as always, but nevertheless has left us with a feeling at times of desperately trying to cram everything in as if the show were ending tomorrow. The early seasons were so delectable because they took their time with the vitally important nuances. We don’t have that many of those savored experiences so far with Season 7 Part 1, though Sam’s portrayal of this particular scene with Chris Larkin is an exception. I’m also still ticked off that Starz cut so many really good scenes from Men In Kilts, choosing instead to show them as “extras”, probably not watched by many people, while they presented us with a truncated, little publicized 4 episode New Zealand adventure - even as they crammed their schedule with little viewed or valued shows they have recently cancelled. They have done this to a show that has actually won multiple awards, distinctions for which Starz is not known. They apparently can’t solve their problems of low viewership for many shows, bad management, and absence of respect in the industry. I feel a distinct foreshadowing of cancellation of MIK before Sam and Graham have a chance to explore the Scottish influence in America. If Outlander, this absolutely brilliantly produced show, were on almost ANY other network, and certainly HBO, it would leave Game Of Thrones in the dust. The original head of Starz when they green-lit Outlander was a personable winner. He is sadly long gone. It would seem that Starz is grateful to Sam Heughan and they may actually appreciate his value. Otherwise they would not have committed to three shows with him, most recently The Neighbor Next Door. I just hope to holy heaven the show is directed, produced, and edited well, and that Starz doesn’t botch the show having adequate publicity. I’m weary of Sam being in productions that are not well directed or produced, which lack multi-dimensional well-developed characters, are not adequately publicized, are not worthy of his abilities, or that somehow manage to be shot during or to come out right at the start of or amidst the worst of a pandemic. There are few who will read this treatise (can’t say I blame them), and certainly no one in charge of the bad management at Starz will, but dammit, at least my frustrations are expressed and my blood pressure is now a tiny bit lower tonight.

I have read your treatise and agree with it, it helped my blood pressure too. However as of this moment I would add that here in the UK we have no idea where we will be watching S7 b, since Lionsgate+ which it is still sitting on is being deleted and will be no more as if 29th February …. We won’t be able to watch it on line, until they let us know where! That puts my blood pressure up somewhat 😡

Some of the frustrations have to be levelled at Covid restrictions, but outside of that, you aren't wrong. I was really irked at Season 2 of Men in Kilts; it was a real disservice to New Zealand (they certainly had enough material to do a few more shows) as Sam and Graham are hilarious together and there was so much more to show that the producers simply glossed over. Makes you wonder that even if they were to green-light another season of MIK, that the boys my just refuse to do it in light of being short-shrifted in Szn 2.

@annah645
@annah645 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree, except for the fact that Lionel was right. His family did come after the Frasers', hence the whole plot of this episode. And though everything turned out alright after Tom's confession, we don't know what the consequences of Claire's charge will have on everyone on the ridge (in the show, not the books). The fisherfolk will definitely still think she's a witch, there will definitely still be mistrust and rumors, and now the Governor is suspicious of the Frasers' as well, which won't be good in the long run. So ultimately, the Browns' royally fucked the Frasers. This really could have been avoided, had Jamie not done the "honorable" thing and given Lionel Brown's body to his brother. In that sense, Richard would never have known that his brother's demise was the Frasers' fault.

For people saying this is out of character for Jamie it’s not. Jamie broke a man’s neck with his bare hands during Claire’s rescue in the books.

He also twisted the head around, so the face was in the back. that's how Claire said it in the book anyway.

The Browns are like those smug bullies who piss their pants when you actually fight back. Him and Lionel had the most punchable faces of the series.

Would that this Jamie was the one in the barn with Claire after he gets the rings back. The book scene was one of the hottest scenes I've ever read and the series scene was just sad. Book Jaime forever!!

He is more violent in the books but he does protect Claire, however book Claire is quite harsh sometimes because when she first traveled the 2nd ww was over and she saw a lot of awfull. So they slightly more kinder in the show.

I really hope Jamie just said that to scare him only because baby Bonnie is being taken care of by one Richard’s daughters. Also I feel like at some point those folks have to realize it just ain’t worth it to go after the Frasers. Two of their leaders tried it and both of them are dead.
