Overview of who we consider state and non-state actors in global politics. This video will look at Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs), and Transnational Companies (TNCs).

This really helps me with my understanding of "non-state actor", so thank you! Just one question, let's say a secessionist group in a state managed to get their independence from the related country (say California leave the US by force, FOR EXAMPLE) and managed to get their own functioning government but not recognised internationally, are they considered non-state actor?

According to your analysis, this assumed secessionist group gained their independence already... At independence, they automatically become State Actors not "Non-State Actors", and they are recognize in the global space as a sovereign state.

Thanks! Civil societies is how we often explain organizations outside of the government that help society function - many are NGOs.

Sure - Organizations that look at regional issues are, for example, the Arctic Council. ASEAN is an organization in South-East Asia. The African Union would be another one. You can check out this list here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_organization

Sure - one I use with my classes is 'Global Politics' by Andrew Heywood. It covers a wide range of topics. More specific ones that I like that are good for a foundational understanding of Global Politics and are written in an accessible way are 'The Great Delusion' by John Mearsheimer and the 'Future of Power' by Joseph Nye

The success of big corporations in the Western bloc was a major factor in the USA and the west beginning to economically outpace the Soviet Union. One of the big effects of Gorbachev's perestroika policy was to open the Soviet Union's economy to American corporations to stimulate growth. In Poland, the Solidarity trade union was an extremely important Non-State actor that pressured the government to hold free elections. The United Nations gave the Soviet Union and USA an opportunity to communicate. Hope those examples help!

Rule and goal should aim at making it affordable for all otherwise it dangerous. Reduce weapon program and reduce materials consumption is key to recovery because material depleted is because of military build up by big power like recent Chinese growth in arms trade is very damaging

Well, for state actors, it generally comes down to the strength of a government's policies... and the idea of 'good governance' - when a government legitimately acts for progress vs. the level of corruption.

Hi there! Non State Actors have a very important role in globalization. Multinational Corporations, for example, are some of the primary drivers of economic globalization. They operate around the world, and are able to utilize the markets and resources in different countries to maximize profits, and therefore have a major impact on the world. Organizations like the UN or NATO have an important role in political globalization, where they connect different countries to address political issues. Hope that's what you're looking for!

Haha, well, this sounds like a homework question, so I won't totally do your work for you, 😅... But here are a few things to consider. Think about the role of Transnational Corporations, maybe even social media corporations, like Facebook or Twitter, and their role in things like political speech, especially considering recent events in the United States. Another classic example to look into is the role of NGOs in raising awareness about human right issues.

Consider, for example the changing nature of war - and who states are increasingly fighting against. You could also consider the increasing power of corporations.

That's a really interesting question! According to this paper from the UN, they consider the Palestinian Authority a state actor... But Hamas, who has more control in Gaza as a non-state actor. www.un.org/unispal/document/auto-insert-202737/
