It's now over a year since I have returned. I have decided against having a TV and a radio so I have no drama and no crime in my life. To be honest, I have a more peaceful life in Jamaica than I had in Germany. Strange for a "crime ridden" country. Isn't it?

@@keys6 I can only relate to what I experience. Not to statistics nor what is shown on TV (I haven't owned a TV since 1999). I have not heard a single gunshot since living here in Jamaica and I haven't experienced any crime. I even sleep with my door open from time to time and I don't live in a gated community. I also don't know anyone who has directly experienced gun crimes. None of my relatives that I know have. But then again it depends on where you live and whom you associate with. Based on my experience, crime is not the main issue in Jamaica.

Hello! We just got back from one of our several trips we'll make this year. Everyday we took our regular route taxi to the downtown bus stop area or baywest medical center. From there we would walk straight through town to the hip strip to Docs cave, and honestly the people couldn't have been any nicer. I'd rather walk down there than walk here in the US.

If the crime rate in jamaica was as bad as they report it in the news there then it would reflect in the real estate market, but it does not. I think it is important for the powers that be for the locals to be in a constant state of diress so...

Bravo on a job well done! You are a true Jamaican now, understanding the nuances of how our culture works. The political comments especially surprised me, you show a deep understanding of our history and how politics influences public opinion in Jamaica. I hope the explanation helps potential visitors, but I don't expect many members of the diaspora to believe what you are saying. I'm convinced there is a negative echo chamber/feedback loop going on there. Many have successfully convinced locals that Jamaica is worthless, the common phrase being "I would never live there." There is a historical context to this, which I wont' bother to go into. The local media's influence on the nation's mental health is worth some investigation. It's traumatizing the country. Not just about crime either. Recently there was a blaring headline about how Canada had issued a travel advisory because of the SOE. They made a big deal about it, trying to prove Jamaica is going downhill. A few of us had to point out that the Canadian Prime Minister and his family were here (at the time) enjoying their vacation, so clearly they don't take the travel advisory very seriously. I'm so tired of the drum beat of negativity. Fortunately, as an immigrant you are able to see what many others refuse to, or are afraid to see. Thanks for speaking about it.
@trevorsteer7331 Жыл бұрын
Well said Feona. But I am also encouraged to see more and more of the Jamaican Diaspora seeing that Jamaica is "BETTER" than they originally perceive...not just from more of them (us) travelling back more often...but also considering moving back after they retire.

Hi There! SOEs explained well. I have driven through several of those spot check points while in JA. My honest opinion is it is a tool to curb/prevent crime. It is a way for citizens to feel safe. Simply...if you have nothing to hide..why worry or complain? For those that use an airport/airplane to travel..I don't see you complaining about the process you MUST adhere to! Are YOUR rights violated then? Irina...terminology eh? Actually, crime is currently less/down in Jamaica since the start of 2023. So, dont SOEs actually work? Small price to pay (minutes of my time to slow down)! Numbers don't lie! Can't wait for your next video!

The central issue is that it is subject to govt. abuse. The question then is whether the risk of govt. overreach is an imminent threat to individuals' civil rights. Thus far, it doesn't seem so, and there is a very real ongoing emergency.

@Kattah B....I don't see Irina's video as "Complaining", but rather "Explaining" what SOE in Jamaica really means. But yes, there will always be some see it from YOUR POV and others who Don't...which is something Irina also mentions (i.e., there are differing views of how SOE is applied in Jamaica). I myself have experienced several of these SOE's during my travel to Jamaica over the years (and while I was travelling with my American Friends). We actually thought it was because they were looking for SPECIFIC INDIVIDUALS, and not just a "measure" to try and curtail crime. So, I found this Video to be EXTREMELY EDUCATIONAL in explaining the SOE in Jamaica. As for my PERSONAL opinion: I actually see BOTH SIDES. I can see WHY this method can help to reduce Violent Crimes; but I can see how this could become "normalized", thus taking away the Rights of Citizens to go about "freely". Your Airport example is a great example of that. But here is a FACT that many may not realize: In America, you will find this SAME METHOD employed to try and find / stop Drug Traffickers. However, they use State Police and they do NOT call it a State of Emergency. In fact, they do NOT even announce when this is being done....but it HAPPENS...and Frequently.

Shalom Irina! Kudos on a very well researched feature. I stand corrected if it's erroneous to assume this important topic had not been explained to an international audience by way of the Jamaican context and perspective. If my statement is accurate, I wonder how this had taken all this time to inform people, especially since Jamaica is a major tourism and hospitality destination that could be adversely affected by even a perceived danger. While listening to your presentation, i remembered that the Prime Minister in his presentation to the nation a few days ago, had introduced geoinformatics as a scientific tool that is used to inform important courses of action prior to their implementation. He didn't say it that way, but that was essentially the gist. He did point out that the system can map areas of hotspots as it relates to crime. He also specifically mentioned using geoinformatics as an additional tool on infrastructure projects as well. Informing as an example the most suitable geographical area to place a major roadway. Interesting concepts, though I strayed away from your topic, but only just a bit. I love for work! Slava Ukraini!

When a Jamaican learn the American Ghetto accent it is learnt and doesn't identify them as a people of a particular country. Spend some times and listen to people of various countries and compare. Spent the first three weeks of 2023 in the Negril erea. The SOE was enforced in response to the Canadian government official travel warning/ban and set to expire on Jan. 11. Aside from the pop-up traffic stops I didn't feel any emergency. I live in Grange Hill when I am there and it was said to be the most dangerous place in Jamaica. The local police offcers knew our driver's van, so we usually got waved through. On a few occasions, in Negril, I used my Grange Hill connection to get street "venders" to ease up their sales pitch. Negril has a vibrant music scene and many tourists come from places like U.S, Canada, Germany, UK to enjoy the music and interesting , talented, musicians and people, regardless of the media hype. So you are spot on about that and thanks for dispelling some of the myths. Cheers

My grandparent's generation had less education and a lower standard of living in Jamaica when they were young. But violent crimes back then weren't as rampant as now. The culture and mindset back then were different from what they have become now. Nowadays, youths grow up in a culture where they see dons getting big-up by entertainers while these same entertainers don't big-up school teachers, electricians, software programmers, etc. Guess who many of the kids now want to emulate? The persons who get the most ratings in everyday life are people like the choppas and others who make fast money the illegal way. The majority of Jamaicans are peaceful people. Its a minority of criminals who commit the majority of crime and mek Jamaica look bad. Weak and outdated laws embolden criminals to run amok because criminals believe some of them will get punished but the majority of them will get away with crime. I encourage others to join this debate. And yes, I do listen to Sir P.

Of course there is a criminal element in the country, but the way you put it, it is like the Jamaican people can't travel out of their homes because they will become victims of crime, people ought to stop putting down Jamaica like this and stop spreading false narrative about the country, just like others countries there is crime, that takes place in the country. The Government is trying its best; Also, if the country was so crime ridden, why are developers building all these new homes, such as single family homes, townhomes, apartment homes etc., shopping centers, why are there infrastructure upgrades taking place in the country, I guess you haven't read about these changes,or do any research to learn about the changes that's taking place in the country, but you are just stuck in the past and keeps repeating the same negative narrative, that Jamaica is full of crime.

I think if they provide more JOBS or have things made in Jamaica by locals,keep people busy then no one would have time for crime.

You probably didn't want to say it, but there are funds set aside for State of Emergency and it's another way for the government to tap into that and do God knows what!

So in a nutshell, the police and army will be enforcing their legal and legacy right to detain, disrupt and divert without cause!!!

A great video as usual. I agree with your opinion. Have you looked into the history of the government / political parties perpetuating the crime itself? Not too long ago elections were deadly events.

The arrest like that has happened in the US on January 6 and in Canada in February 2022. Terrible situation. But the situation in Jamaica is different because of the deep poverty. However, I am concerned the situation will discourage foreigners from visiting, and not without cause.

@@winsomebarnett7067 Perhaps for short term vacations, but for relocating long term? In a small country with a state of emergency every year, and no relief in sight? Who can ignore this type of environment? And Irene tells us what the police "just can't do" in a country with a lot of everyday corruption at so many levels, including the police itself?
@dovygoodguy1296 Жыл бұрын
With all due respect to Irina, how can she generalize about how little the State of Emergency affects foreigners from a single clip?
