People are so hard on those suffering from mental illness. They have compassion and support for illnesses like cancer, but for someone with bipolar, borderline, etc, they will mock and alienate them. It makes living with it exponentially worse.

I am also bipolar and for many years didn't recognize that I was the problem. No idea how I couldn't see it when I look back now. It took losing everything literally, before I went and got help. My life is a completely different story today thanks to the meds. I don't know what happened with Kanye, but I hope that he is able to face his problem and get on the meds because it's a lifesaver.

Maurice, I worked directly with folk in state hospital settings for more than eight years. I saw this pain close up. I also understand how reluctant people are to face that mental illness is illness. I feel bad for Mr. West, too. There is help, for sure.

It takes a lot of thought and empathy and courage to look out at a stranger, and try to see, not just their actions, but the invisible suffering that may have triggered those actions. It is so much easier for humans to judge, than it is to empathize. As an autistic I know all too well how easy it is for other people to equate actions (and reactions) with their own idea of intent, and not ever see the inner turmoil of another’s soul. I’ve been a fan of your performance as Sonny since the very first day he appeared on General Hospital, and it gives me the greatest happiness to know that that person behind such a brilliant character, strives to empathize and educate and help. To say thank you is an understatement. I have been living with bipolar since I was diagnosed at 15. I am 43 now and did not start taking medication until last year. My entire life has been a scary roller coaster. I have done things I never imagined when I have been manic, and I cost myself my marriage after 16 years and it hurts. I love that you speak out about bipolar and mental illness. I have had depression for 40 years and lost 2 brothers to suicide. One of them had "manic depression" as it was called in the 80's. Both had addiction problems. I loved you on All My Children and on GH. So glad you all are able to be back to work safely!

My older brother was diagnosed with bipolar back when it was called depression with manic interludes. We shared a house for a few months while he was off his meds. Some days he would scare me other days he seemed normal. He just didn't like the way the meds made him feel. He's been gone since 2011 and I still feel him with me at times. I'm presently going thru my Mom going into Alzheimer's disease. She lives with her older sister, both in their 80's, in a retirement home. The GH story with Sonny and Mike has helped me understand the illness as it unfolds.

That's good advice that Maurice is giving ,because only someone who has been there can understand. Even though he is bipolar he has accepted his condition buy Kanye hasn't because he still grieving his mother ,which his hasn't accepted it yet and no one to help him properly, so he lashes out by way of what ever state of mind he's in because so many people took advantage of him in his time of need and didn't really help him when he lost his mother. You do not need to know him to know that the shoes you walk in will fit giving advice to him if he will take it,I applaud you for trying.............I will be glad to see the return of GH on August 3 welcome back to our homes.

You are blessed to feel that way about your illness. Our son hides and gets so bad that it takes the law to intervene to get him help and that breaks our hearts. All of his friends have turned their backs on him and most of the family....tough to know because he has a big heart and a good soul; just a sick man with a nasty illness that he didn't ask for. Maurice love your book and your acting. My step-daughter is bi-polar however it took the family a long time to find out what was her issue. I believe more specifics and identifiers need to be shared so those suffering can get help. Many dont understand specifically the characteristics. I believe you can change that by being more specific about your journey. Understanding highs and lows is one thing but learning the types of insane behaviours and decisions may help those suffering to identify and seek treatment. I didn't know this until last year. When I heard he was running for President, I wondered if it was for real. He does admit his illness but also says he is mostly in manic state. Maurice I understand what your saying I really do as I’ve been bi-polar for 40 years and I do take medication and struggle everyday. I do reach out for help 3 times I’ve asked for help where my life could have been ended and I try very hard not to judge and I’m not ashamed but Kanye needs to make the choice to get help for himself certainly he has a better opportunity for getting help with whom he is. I feel sorry for his family too as I’ve watched my mom suffer my whole life and she watched her father as well and she ended up losing him to suicide when she was just 18. Mental illness is very hard it’s not like a infection that can be seen or a broken bone that can heal it is a true struggle however as with any condition you need to take the steps to heal. I pray he finds help soon.

I agree. It has been very hard to watch. As a family member who has had to hospitalize family members I guess I judge Kim more then him. I worry about the 4 young kids until he gets help. I saw my dad have a full out breakdown whe. I was 10 and he was taken away for a few weeks. That is hard on a kid. I'm 60 now and have more then gotten over it and I care for my dad who is 90. But kids should be protected. Also, my dad was asked when he was about 70 what kept him on lithium and in therapy since many quit. His answer without hesitation was my mom. He said had he stopped she would have left with us 4 kids to keep us all protected.

Maurice, you're really kind, my friend. We can only help self , unfortunately. I remember that depression before I got on meds. People have to want the help and receive the gift of it. I knew something was off with him myself. Wow, I recognized it a long time ago bc 2 out of 7 of my siblings Bi Polar.The one that wanted help lost his life. The one that doesn't I can't help bc it's mental illness, addiction and I think multiple personalities. I've had to clear my name in so many courts bc my sister stole my license years ago and kept getting arrested under my name. I worked at one of the courts so it was pretty easy, but if everyone around didn't know the both of us my life could have been destroyed by that. A few of her arrests are under my name ended up on Google. Even though charges dropped. I learned that recently and I have to pay $3,000 a piece to get them down. She's in her 30s, never worked a day in her life. I haven't had a relationship with my own sister in a decade because of it and even have a restraining order on her. She threw a chair threw my window. Attacked my Parents in rages. After She went to jail She was Brazen enough to give my name AGAIN after she ruined my nephew's wedding in New Hampshire as recently as October 3rd 2020 when a cop pulled my Father's car over and I pulled behind him to make sure he was okay. Trooper Stevens comes up to my car, I gave him my ID he said the girl in this car just identified herself as you and she had warrants and they arrested her for violating a restraining order and for giving a false identity. Took her on her warrants oh, and of course my father maneuvered it in New Hampshire and had her released and now she's out there using and I was so mad my Dad didn't make her go away. The Judges all dismiss her shit , but I'm angry because this kid says she's me and I never want anyone to confuse us because she's crazed and will not help herself. Looks so much like me, but junked out. So I tried and tried and I couldn't help her, but I don't need to be near her like that. I can only Pray 1 day she'll help herself. She's in denial though and my Dad babies her because he feels guilt he was away for 7 yrs when she was 5 to 12. We all had him to mold us in those formative yrs. Some are lost causes, but bc I got on meds early in life mine is good. It depends if people want help!

I knew i could count on you to speak up for Kanye. My heart breaks too but I’m worried as well. In short my sweet charitable animal and baby loving husband was off his meds and is now in jail for murder. As a result of a hallucination he believed he was god and the victim was satan. PLEASE stay on your meds my friends!!! My problem is though, unlike Maurice, my husband and daughters don’t believe anyone that they need help during the breakdowns. And by law your hands are tied unless you can get them on tape threatening themselves or others. Ugh!!! Prayers for Kanye and Kim diring this heartbreaking time.

You never "make it through" bipolar. You manage it. It's something you live with, every second of every day. There is no cure. You have to stay on meds your entire life. Maybe if people knew, they would reach out to me more. The depression is so debilitating.

kanye needs help. he is suffering. I have dealt with these issues all of my life and my heart hurts for him. i don't care for the man's music and don't even know much about him to be honest but i do know when someone is hurting and falling apart. this thing..this thing that happens to our brains is horrible. i was diagnosed as manic/depressive/schizophrenic by the military when i was 17 and it was the first time i ever realized that i wasn't a bad kid like i was called, i was sick. I've never had the luxury of medication for this thing in my brain so it's a constant struggle to remain calm. i'm 50 now...i've learned to tell when i'm gonna have problems for the most part but still have some issues. being sober for 4 years has helped and i smoke an assload of pot. i wanna thank you mr.benard for your speaking up on this issue. i watched you on dr.oz and realized how similar all of of that suffer with this thing are. you were very brave to speak up and speak out. i watched because i was a fan of sonny's...but i'm now a fan of yours. I think his mother was a great lose to him her love and understanding was something he’s missing I think he feels to much pressure with the people he’s around I don’t think he feels he can be himself that he has to be more than he can be at times,he is loved but not the kind of love and compassion he needs.just being Kanye without the fame part. For awhile .God will watch over him.he can’t allow the Demons in no matter who!!
