In this introduction video I take you through the first 40 minutes of gameplay of the PC survival game Stationeers.
There are loads of space survival games out there but what sets Stationeers apart is it's focus on systems and engineering. You don't just slap down fully functional blocks and get on with it. If you want an airlock, you'll have to design and build one. And figure out how to power it. And pressurise it. As you build more complex systems you can introduce greater automation with a variety of tools from simple logic chips to fully programmable ones. Gas and liquid pressures and temperatures matter and follow the same laws of thermodynamics as in the real world.
It all makes for a deep and engaging game experience, with an emphasis on problem solving and engineering. But it can also be overwhelming for new players and with the game still in early access, the devs have sometimes struggled to keep the in-game tutorials updated with the latest features.
The Stationeers start can be daunting for a new player. You begin with a lander filled with 6 crates of tools, parts and gadgets but it's not always obvious how to use them and some may not be strictly necessary.
In this tutorial, I explain what to do with all that stuff on your lander and show you how to build a basic shelter before the end of the first day that will allow you to start growing food.
If you've bought Stationeers and feel baffled about how to get started and what all that stuff is then this video is for you. It will show you what you need from the 2022 starting equipment and how to use it frugally to make your first fully functioning base.
I show you how to lay it out, how big to make it and how to set up the airlock. After that you'll learn how to mine and smelt ore, make more items, power your base and how to pressurise it and grow crops.
And if you are thinking of trying Stationeers and want to know how far you can get in the 2 hours that you are eligible for a Steam refund then watch this video first!
And if you've never heard of Stationeers but you enjoy engineering games like Kerbal Space Program or have tried other space survival games but are looking for something a bit more complex then definitely watch this video and see if it's for you.
Stationeers is a survival game about systems and engineering and the learning curve can be steep, but it is deeply satisfying when you get a complex system or automation working well.
