In this introduction video I take you through the first 40 minutes of gameplay of the PC survival game Stationeers.
There are loads of space survival games out there but what sets Stationeers apart is it's focus on systems and engineering. You don't just slap down fully functional blocks and get on with it. If you want an airlock, you'll have to design and build one. And figure out how to power it. And pressurise it. As you build more complex systems you can introduce greater automation with a variety of tools from simple logic chips to fully programmable ones. Gas and liquid pressures and temperatures matter and follow the same laws of thermodynamics as in the real world.
It all makes for a deep and engaging game experience, with an emphasis on problem solving and engineering. But it can also be overwhelming for new players and with the game still in early access, the devs have sometimes struggled to keep the in-game tutorials updated with the latest features.
The Stationeers start can be daunting for a new player. You begin with a lander filled with 6 crates of tools, parts and gadgets but it's not always obvious how to use them and some may not be strictly necessary.
In this tutorial, I explain what to do with all that stuff on your lander and show you how to build a basic shelter before the end of the first day that will allow you to start growing food.
If you've bought Stationeers and feel baffled about how to get started and what all that stuff is then this video is for you. It will show you what you need from the 2022 starting equipment and how to use it frugally to make your first fully functioning base.
I show you how to lay it out, how big to make it and how to set up the airlock. After that you'll learn how to mine and smelt ore, make more items, power your base and how to pressurise it and grow crops.
And if you are thinking of trying Stationeers and want to know how far you can get in the 2 hours that you are eligible for a Steam refund then watch this video first!
And if you've never heard of Stationeers but you enjoy engineering games like Kerbal Space Program or have tried other space survival games but are looking for something a bit more complex then definitely watch this video and see if it's for you.
Stationeers is a survival game about systems and engineering and the learning curve can be steep, but it is deeply satisfying when you get a complex system or automation working well. As a new player, it's incredibly frustrating when you say "we're going to do x" and you grab several things out of the drop pod, but you don't say what they are, or hover over it long enough to actually see what it is. I appreciate that this is probably a great tutorial for people who have played the game at least a bit and are familiar what the different things are, but as a brand newbie, this tutorial was as frustrating as it was helpful for a variety of reasons like the one mentioned above.

Respect, I'd vote this for the best quick start guide I have seen for Stationeers! Pretty good pace and you explain some details too.

Thanks - that's great to hear! You've probably seen the link but if it's useful, I also have a series of shorter videos each focusing on a single topic (these have been specifically recorded as walkthroughs, not just rehashed from my other videos) kzbin.info/aero/PLatBtn3KoDo0wbCArjEvSvX4EvdVy32WD There are only 14 on there so far but I'm adding them as fast as I can!

I'm really happy you enjoyed it! I started making these videos not really expecting anyone would watch them so feedback like this is really encouraging me to keep going - thank you! It's a great game. Multiplayer used to be somewhat broken but they took a year and totally rebuilt a lot of the core code so that it would work better (single player also runs faster now too) and released that in June 2022. So until now you probably couldn't play with friends (it was laggy and frustrating). I think the online multiplayer scene will grow again now and there's an official Discord which has a channel to find groups to play with: discord.gg/stationeers It's also fun single player though!

It's strange to watch content from someone with this name :D I am using Murk as an alias for 25 years now and it's like a second name for me.

Coming back 2 weeks later to watch the whole thing… lol… One thing I noticed early on, you didn’t flick the power on the power control unit and if you don’t do that, the solar panel doesn’t charge the battery…

It should work the same way on any planet but beware that the basic airlock setup doesn't empty the external atmosphere before pressurising. Not an issue on moon or Mars (thin and fairly non-toxic) but could be a problem on planets with hot/cold/toxic/high pressure atmospheres since it will let some of that into your base each time
