I want to show you how you can use the turbine generator as a powerful and reliable power source for your base building. It uses a "little" trick with the filtration unit and is therefore open to discussion as to whether it is a bug or a feature.

Just finished up constructing, powering up, and balancing my my 10.8KW turbine generator system. 40 turbine generators per tunnel x 3 tunnels side by side. One filter per tunnel. uses about 100w to power itself. The rest is pure surplus to power my base. *insert feels so good meme*

Hehe yea .. The system, like shown in the video, is not working anymore in this setup (they changed the filtration unit a couple of patches ago). Thought the general idea of a wind tunnel power plant is still valid. The last time I tried it it worked with one active vent (100w). For this you have to change the volume of the rooms. This you can do with a) fill it with dirt (terrain manipulator) or b) fill the rooms with water. Maybe it gives you the idea and I hope you have fun to play around with it. And thanks for stoping by.

Hey, it's me. I'm here to help you with math again. The turbines were added to the game before the basic solar panels. At the time the regular solar panel cost less than a single turbine, and on every world other than Mimas a single solar panel will produce more power on average than a single turbine. And at the time the solar panels were maintenance free too. So solar panels were clearly the more cost efficient option (even on Mimas) back then, and that's why no-one uses them. You appear to be on Mimas, and there the regular solar panels are still maintenance free. In your situation a single panel will produce about half the power output of a turbine. But also you don't have to build a massive tunnel structure. Each turbine needs to be covered by solid frames on 4 sides, each costing 6 steel to make, for a total of additional 24 steel for each turbine. But with the current price of the regular solar panel being raised so much (to 15 steel), it makes sense now to make one turbine on Mimas instead of two solar panels. The cost in iron/steel is almost the same, but the solar panel needs a bunch of additional copper, that the turbines don't need. But if we compare the turbines to regular solar panels on the Moon, the turbine looses hands down, as a single panel will produce 2.8 times (5.5 times solar energy compared to Mimas) more power on average than a single turbine. And if we compare the heavy solar panel on Venus to the turbine, the solar still comes out very strong. At the cost of 19 steel and 24 copper, heavy solar will produce the same average output as 2.8 turbines each costing 31 iron/steel. So, is it overpowered? Yes, but not nearly as overpowered as solar is. The real problem isn't the turbine, but the pumps. All pumps in game consume a fixed amount of energy for a variable amount of work being done. Which means that you can always design a system where a ton of work is being done with minimal energy. And don't get me started on the zero energy pumps in the furnaces. If you're curious you can chain up a bunch of furnaces for fun and profit.

Efficiency is a function of cost. And cost is in the majority of cases a function of time. Time, especially in games, is a matter of the vantage point. What I'm saying here is, that you have to specify your vantage point before calculating the efficiency. To me it looks like you jump between start and late game and it is not clear on what vantage point you base your calculations. I have to admit that using the word 'overpowered' was probably not the best word to choose, on my part. The 'overpowered' was more meant to be in the combination with the filtration unit. Efficiency, in its base definition, has in general no meaning in a non competitive game and everyone is calculating it different. For me it is more rewarding to see how I can do the same thing in different ways and the turbine generator has a lot to offer in that regard. If you value the solar panels for their ease of use and material cost, that's perfectly fine, but calling them efficient based on your point of view - not so much. Based on your calculations you could also argue that the solid generator is the most efficient power source in the game. Like I said, it is a matter of the vantage point. I haven't seen any other comment from you on this channel. So I'm not sure if your first sentence is appropriate.

The tunnel works with composite windows. You only need between 100-200kPA to make the system work, which is in the threshold of comp windows failures. I am using this with an underground base and it does matter what is more efficient, its the aesthetic of my base that matters in the end.

if you replace the turbine generators with the upright wind turbines, you generate more power. its OP as hell, i consider it a glitch, similar to a vacuum cooling system.

@casegard4324 3 жыл бұрын
Wow. Really? You mean if you put the wind turbines in a wind tunnel, do they produce their normal output? That sounds indeed very much broken.

@@casegard4324 indeed, I did a playthrough where we exploited as much physics as possible. we were on Vulcan, and I wanted to test out if those turbines reduced heat from the pressure drop from the conversion of Pressure-Velocity of the gas into KE. apparently that was about the time we got the upright wind turbines, so I swapped them in, and originally used volume pumps, then swapped to filters and got but loads of power. I also put the solar panels inside a window box to avoid storm damage, and used vacuum cooling to keep the base at a nice crisp 20C using a hot/cold tank and water cooling (before liquids). Now though, I avoid using broken things within the game to reach the final goal.

I think stirling engines really are superior unless you've got a bunch of cold gas you want to just vent, these used to be really cool but I actually always wanted stirling engines and I got what I wished for so may be a bit biased

I had to test this right away :) and it still works (Version: 0.2.2878.14355). I loaded the old save and it worked. Then I also removed the old turbines and replaced them with fresh ones (incase they changed the turbines) - still works. Are you sure the change was for the turbine generator? I remember something around 'open world' with relation to the wind turbines. Could you maybe remember where you have read about this, because this would be interesting if there is a discussion to change these turbine generators?

Not sure what you mean. If you have set up the wind tunnel you can start to fill up the system with external gas until it reaches the max power capacity of your turbine generators. Maybe make sure that the unfiltered side of the filtration unit is connected to your input wind tunnel input side. I hope this helps a bit.

Do you have any idea what the formula is for power generated vs. pressure difference? You said it has to be a minimum of 101 kPa? Or does it reach maximum 90W at 101 kPa?
@casegard4324
@casegard4324 2 жыл бұрын
Uhh sorry I have not looked at this for a long time. I vaguely remember that it was indeed 101kpa for 90w. But I also remember that they have changed it to something around 50kpa for 90w and this made it easier to deal with exploding walls/windows. But this is all I can say for the matter :) . Are you by any chance onto something new?

Sounds like you have not connected the unfiltered side to the input of the wind tunnel. The filtration unit has two outputs - make sure you have the right one, or connect both outputs together. It should work without filters :).
