This Both Sucks and Blows - Terraformers #15

Welcome to Stationeers with the Terraforming mod. We've got 2 experienced engineers, 2 novices and 1 Capac to turn Mars from polluted wasteland into a green paradise. We're going to need some luck (a lot of luck).

Sad to hear this is over, hoping this isn't the end of Stationeers for you! This has been one of the only series of stationeers I've seen that's been remotely easy to follow along with AND that has been entertaining

It was more the transition from version to version I think, the save went through a fair few large changes. This is definitely not the end of stationeers even though it's the end of the series. We were all left wanting to play more rather than being frustrated 🙂

You guys do know that a tiny bit of pollutant is okay to breathe, right? Just worry about keeping it under, say... half a percent. Your character is happy to breathe that continuously without harm, and the plants should be fine too. Also, Shadow's suit code needs to check the external atmospheric composition, or else it'll happily open the helmets in a room pressurized full of warm but very toxic gas.

From what I remember that was not an option. The reason why I check pressure instead of composition is because I can not check for specific atmospheric gasses with the suit, so that’s why I had to make sure the gas pressure is in a specific range.

You can make it close by detecting internal composition but as far as I remember no you can't detect external composition

@@blackshadow-xm9lj May be just check for bad conditions to close the helmet if anyone forgets, but not force it to open (and stay open) as you dont know if there are the right conditions to have it open. So your chip can save people, but not force them to die of bad gases, under "right" conditions. May be also add a "yield" at the start of the Main, to reduce CPU-load. jm2c. ;-)

In case of bad atmosphere you could open helmet, check internal for bad conditions, close helmet, flush suit and lock the code until pressure drops significantly. After all if you ended up in correct pressure but with bad gases, then you will have to go through an airlock to enter safe atmosphere, and external pressure will drop to zero at that point. So you could detect that as "its possibly safe again" condition.

Episodes that Shadow hasn't acquired Splitsie's Skull through nefarious means: *4* The Trojan software is now installed into Splitsie's suit....so does Shadow have a remote 'Open' feature installed...? Seriously hoping that Splitsie finds a way to fix the save. I have seen a few suggestions below. Here's hoping for another wacky adventure of Terraformers from Mars in two weeks.

Sadly it very much looks to be the end :( Nev was unable to find a fix that worked (we tried a whole bunch of things in between all those crashes). But Nev, Shadow and myself are likely to start a streamed series of it soon so hopefully we'll get further along before that one breaks :D

I was able to fix some bugs in my save. Try running these commands, then save and exit the game completely. DeleteLooseItems, DeleteOutOfBounds and lastly regeneraterooms which will lock up the game but if you leave it run it will comeback after 5 minutes. Save and exit. Hopefully it fixes the issue.

@@Splitsie I had a similar issue and got it fixed this way: Deleted the game completely and reinstalled it - loaded the game without the terraforming mod (I know, that resets the world atmosphere, but that fixed it for me) and then I reinstalled bepinex+terraforming mod (and started with a "fresh" world atmosphere) crashes were gone afterwards - at least for me

For Blackshadow, it's _strongly_ recommended to place a `yield` statement immediately after `main:` (or whatever your loop start is). Yield pauses the code until the start of the next tick (0.5s). The game will only execute 128 lines of code per tick before _forcibly_ yielding until the next tick whever it happens to be in the code. If this occurs in an unexpected spot, this can result in odd code behavior, such as the code "reacting" to a state that was valid on the last tick but not the current one. Yield ensure that the entire loop of code runs on a single tick, because it delays each loop execution until the start of a tick. Without it, the loop will rapidly continue over and over until it runs 128 lines (much of which is wasted, since the values being read only change per tick, so it'll just re-read the same value over and over), then pause wherever it happens to be until the next tick before doing it again.

Is this game's logic really just 2FPS? I know minecraft's it 20FPS, but 2FPS seem to be very low.

Great series! I love your SE content but y'all were also so fun to watch playing Stationeers. Sucks that the save broke, my headcanon is after the others went into cryo, Splitsie had his fated accident... Weird lore aside, would love to see you do this again, maybe on one of the other planets or the moon. Like many have said, it is one of my favorite series especially with how knowledgable all of you are at the game and how quickly you (appear to) proceed. Can't wait for the next one!

Wait until Tiffany figures out what really happened when Splitsie 'fixed' his 'lungs'. But that's probably best for the gene pool.

Shadow's gonna set up an interplanetary truck stop, and I guess that's what might be needed to get your operation finished for the money thing. Buying pollutant for its negative price might well be worthwhile though if you want to seriously, absurdly so, overbuild storage for it specifically.

Food decays in vending machine, at least since several updates ago. Decays slower in refrigerated vending machine, I guess at the same rate as in refrigerator.

Don't forget you need an area to experiment on the plants, to get plants that can survive outside. The plant torture chamber, which Shadow seems to be quite qualified for.

This is fun while it lasted, I feel like you guys were far enough along that you could have easily set up a semi-automatic giant airscrubber set up and get it running, and not worry about making the base perfect. You guys were basically right there. It's awesome to watch you guys do Stationeers content in general. I really do hope that these crashes don't put you guys off for a super long time. Maybe look into dedicated hosting? see if that is a bit more stable, if be expensive

Welp, sorry to hear that this might be "it" for the series - But, thanks all the same Splitsie and crew -> The first couple of episodes got me into the game by seeing what was possible 🍻 ... my initial stance was "nope" on looks, esp. the player avatars. I've been having a blast with Stationeers. I wonder if the Terraforming mod is the root cause of all the crashes you experienced, exacerbated by recent changes to atmospherics mechanics by RocketWerkz (Phase Change + the "flow" update ... and quite probably, the pre-xmas changes to the world save format) -> It seems some combination of these has resulted in an unrepairable, broken save file. Re: your base's air scrubbers -> Rather than trying to change the liquid pollutant back to a gas, you might have been better off collecting the condensate in a liquid tank for future use. Then the liquid could be used in an Evaporation phase-change device to cool down the refrigerant gas used in the air conditioners when you got to that. A moot point for the current series, but food for thought on future playthroughs / series.

Be careful with that chip.if you enter a room that is pressurized with a toxic gas your helmet will still open. As far as I understand the code, you will have no way to close your helmet in that situation 😅

Strictly speaking, you can test for that case. You can't check the external air composition, but you _can_ check the suit's air composition, even when the helmet is open. If the partial pressure of toxic gases is too high, you can close and lock the helmet, flush the suit, and then disable the auto-open code until exterior pressure drops below a certain level (say, 1 Pa, meaning you went through an airlock) or until the user manually resets it by turning the helmet lock off by hand. Edit: though IIRC, you can't trigger the normal suit flush functionality from the IC10. My strategy was to set the target pressure to 0, then set it back to normal after it dropped under a certain value, like 100 Pa. You retain a bit of toxins, but it's usually small enough not to cause an issue, and you can always manually flush afterwards if you want.

Splitsie you have an elevator that goes all the way to the top of the mountain, and each elevator segment is hooked up with a power cable, you don’t need to pull cable all the way up there since you already have a power spine.

I think that is a light cable and they need heavy cables for the wind turbines. I could be wrong though.

Problem with this is that the elevator cable does not run on the input cable (going into the station batteries), but rather on one of the various outputs (coming from the station battery) which would not provide the base with power when hooked up to that cable. And if I remember correctly, the elevator is hooked up with normal cable, rather than heavy ones, which would make a power surge and overload very likely, especially during storms :)

Building an ice mining rocket used to be the best way for massive amounts of gas. Not sure now after the rocket update.

i use heavy wire for my main power backbone and then that gets pulled off by small transformers to APCs from there I'm using small wire for that section. that way each small circuit doesn't blow the entire base. I set my transformers to prevent a power draw to blow the individual circuits.

Shadow accidentally mixed them up and gave splitste the good chip instead of a kill one, they were intended to kill because they turned of the suit ac and locked it which doesn’t relate to the intended functions

Phase change devices are pretty good at moving heat around, id almost suggest making a tank of breathable air and have a pair of phase change devices bring it to the right temp and keep it there so that some of the heating/cooling is handled before air is pumped into a room… but with how big the base is im not sure how much you really want to mix considering i am also wondering how you plan to terraform with the ridiculous amounts of gases to the atmosphere needed and how you plan to get them too. I guess it depends if you will go the rocket or trader route, but would rockets make more pollutants for the planet? Waiting to see the mod fixed before i can see if rocket is a fast but dirty solution.

Nothing fast about rockets since the rocket update. They became a bit of a pain since that.

Maybe for the starter ices like oxygen or volatiles it wouldnt be bad, but the rest of the gases would be rougher since it would require far reaching rockets… traders are still fairly slow since they have a 20 minute reroll timer.

If you want better lights than the circle of the suit light, might I suggest a portable light with a nuclear battery in your inventory (don’t forget to turn it on)? It lasts 32 hours and has light all around you instead of 1 direction. If nuclear battery is too expensive, large battery lasts 4 hours

You should invest in the advanced tanks for suit oxygen they hold more oxygen and pressure to last longer and have a visual level indicator too

I just have a spare tank connected to pressure regulator set to 9.8 Bars (they explode at 10) outside at the entrance to my base and just swap them every time I need to. I almost never have oxygen issues, I think a full tank lasts like 5 days or something like that. With base this big having such swapping spot in 2-3 places in the hallway should be enough.

Specifically, twice as much. Regular tanks cap at 10 MPa, advance tanks cap at 20 (though I keep mine under 15 just to be safe). Note that using an advance tank for your _waste tank_ is not useful at all, however, as waste tanks can't go above about 4ish MPa before the suit stops being able to fill them regardless of type.

About 78% of the air we breath is nitrogen an average of 20.9% (at sea level) is oxygen; the remaining balance consists of argon with trace amounts of CO, CO2, water vapor and noble gases such as neon and helium. If stationeers is realistic an air mix of 78Nitrogen:22 Oxygen should be ideal

Stationeers is not realistic (yet), you only need a minimum amount of O2 and to not have too much of one of the toxins (pollutant and N2O), CO2 isn't counted as a toxin. Apparently they are thinking of changing this in the future when they do some updates focused on survival :)

A little warning for the guys using the automatic suit controls. If they get dysnced it can delete the code on the chip. Dont know if that was patched

You guys should add a separate power bank system for the plants and cryo tube incase power goes out it might not blow the breaker for the cryo and it would be a separate grid kinda

You guys should build tanks for each type of gas and hook them up to the output of the furnace.... you can also setup autominers that are ducted to a centrifuge then dump the centrifuge to ducted silos... Mushrooms also collect O2 and convert to CO2. You guys news to start building rockets and mine nitrogen and ice and Trash (Capac can live his dream and be a junkion). Also look into coal generators, stirling generators and turbines as exhaust for nitrogen and ice (water)

This series is unfortunately dead, the save was corrupted beyond even Nev's ability to fix so we weren't able to record any further. Those crashes that I put in a montage near the end were only a very small fraction of the ones we dealt with in the final recording so we could have some sort of 'ending'. I've been playing solo stationeers over on Twitch the last couple of months and hope to play some more coop with this crew again soon (though probably not till southern hemisphere summer since time zones are hard)

Dang, last episode huh? Well, I do really hope the comments offering troubleshooting help can actually fix the crash issue. Otherwise, I thank you and the crew for an amazing series, and introducing me to a game I've really liked and enjoyed all the mechanics on :D Just curious, what games or scenarios might you have in mind next, or is that part unclear yet?

Sadly not, all of the potential fixes had been tried (it's really handy having Nev around when running into these issues, he's a smart dude with this stuff) :D But Nev, Shadow and I (at the least, the other two may show depending on time of day) are hoping to do a streamed series in Stationeers soon, so keep an eye out for that. As to what's next here? The Collector finale and then I'm going to work on renewing my tutorials and a super secret project which is very much an experiment (in Space Engineers).

Regardless, I am looking forward to seeing what kind of ending you're planning on :) I assume renewing tutorials means remaking them for either a more concise format, or to replace outdated info? Could be interesting to see what's new or different though! Hey Splits! Would you consider to play this scenario on deifferent celestial objects as well like Moon or Venus or Titan? You know like youre SE Survival Unlikely's or Suvival impossible's scenarios. It will be fun to see the panic when you start the game on Venus, or do a mistake there. :)
