On the Milner thing. He signed a new contract in the summer on reduced wages (reportedly a 50% cut), so there was clearly an agreement about playing time and phasing him out of the team and there is presumably an agreement in there with regards to putting him through his coaching badges and things of that nature. There is no way in hell that the plan was for Milner to get as many minutes as he has played, but needs must and he's featured in nearly every game this season due to other injuries. If all goes to plan James Milner comes on in the 80th minute of games, snaps someone, gets his customary yellow card, runs the ball into the corner flag, everyone leaves the stadium happy, and Jimmy Milner ends up being rolled into the coaching staff next season and spends the rest of his days screaming at the U18s & U21 whilst wearing a tracksuit.

Frankly our business wasn't good enough. He needed at the very least another central midfielder. The other issue is playing Elliott in midfield. He leaves Trent way too open. No fault of Elliott just his playing style.

Before the purchase of Thiago the key criteria for the two midfielders slightly further forward than the CDM was their ability to cover for their respective full back and to close down the opposition. Historically look at the assists and goals that came from Liverpool's midfield under Klopp. It was practically non existent. ALL our creativity came from our full backs and that meant that opposing teams knew that if they stopped our full backs then they stopped Liverpool playing. Klopps now realised that! Yes he does need creativity from the full backs but he also needs them to defend. He also needs to have midfielders that are way more creative than they've been historically. Henderson/Gini/Fab worked well for a while, however that must be one of the least creative midfields Liverpool's had in living memory.

Would keep Firmino and Gomez. More than ever a squad is needed to compete for everything and they still are quality players. Firmino now and then shows he brings something nobody else in the squad can bring whilst Gomez has just lost his way a bit. Once he gets some regular games in cups he could regain some form.

Joe Gomez's issue is that every time he comes back into the team he needs 6-7 games before he gets to a good consistent level. As an injury prone, back up option this just doesn't work. If he can go to a team where he's 1st choice and trains at a less intense level then there's a fantastic player there for sure. That said he is useful covering RB as well so I'd want to hold him until we know that spot has the cover we need.

Its the same as Ox, you cant expect him to have a decent game if he only come on as a sub for 10 mins and play so inconsistently (cup competition). He is available but was not trusted by Klopp last year especially towards the end.

Won't happen Trent played in Midfield before, it will take loads of time to adjust his failed in recent times. Trent is a wing back its a position he thrives in. Gomez has the pace and defense skills but can't cross a ball to save his life. Kloop relys of his fallbacks since dortmund days.

I think I'd agree with most of these. My main concern is the midfield where we have a bunch of frequently injured, older players and a bunch of kids, the older players are great but they can't be relied upon week after week and the kids, although talented, are still learning their game and will get pulled apart by more experienced players. We just don't seem to have that happy medium of relatively experienced but dependable players.

Spot on about the ages in our midfield. They’re either the wrong side of 30 or barley even 20. It’s a tough spot to be in and the young players will come along, however in the meantime we may to spend on at least one player entering their prime years. That’s easier said than done though.

@Jay Anthony Liverpools main problem now is that they have a shit midfield. They have one of the best attacking force in the prem. Luis Diaz has been Liverpools best player he and Salah can cut in from the wings due to Firmino dropping back and playin a tad bit out of the box. Nunez needs a functioning midfield. Look at Halaand the majority of his goals came from midfielders he just has to worry about finishing. Liverpools best midfielder is Thiago and again he cant carry the entire midfield.

Gomez made a mistake against Everton that they hit the post from too. We definitely should keep him, versatility and he’s our 4th choice anyways. But he hasn’t shown good enough form to start for more than 3-5 games running since his big injury

As a Liverpool fan who absolutely loves what Trent brings to the team going forward, I still have to admit he is simply not good enough defensively. Teams have learnt the right side of our defence is our weakness and majority of the goals we’ve conceded this season have come from teams attacking that side. Saying slightly exposed is a major understatement, he looks absolutely woeful when teams counter us. In those early games where Thiago, Hendo and Fabinho were not fully fit, I personally would have liked to see Ramsey given a chance at right back and experimented with Trent in the midfield three. I think he could really thrive there

Ramsay has been out with an injury since he joined unfortunately. By the time he’s 100% so will our midfield hopefully, so there would be no need to put Trent in the middle. Plus Ramsay still needs time to develop in any case.

The problem is not not really that he is not defensively "good enough" - Robbo on the left is not that much better than he is defensively - but as Joe pointed out himself, that on the left side we've had Hendo/Milner/Thiago playing who have tracked back and slotted in; whereas in practically every game Elliot has played on the right, and he has not been able to track back and slot in anywhere near as well as the others; and then although Salah has been tracking back more, and working harder to halp out (as Elliot hasn't been - and this is a fundamental reason why Salah hasn;t been able to get into goal scoring positions as he has had to be further back), Diaz does that just as well on the left. And then on the CBs, Gomez is not as good as Van Dijk - which also does not help Trent. So we are playing very un-evenly, and it is because of this systematic problem that leaves us more at threat on one side rather than the other

The only problem with Liverpool is we have aging, injury prone players. We need to move on from some but in reality 2-3 midfielders, a winger, and a RB are the only things we really need. Prefer younger 21-25 great value etc. Bellingham is likely to come, an attacking mid, another defensive mid would be nice. TAA just needs competition behind him to get him performing better defensively. Another left footed winger behind salah is needed

Amazing review from you. We made huge error not bringing in midfielders in the summer. Joshua Kimmich was available and that would have assisted us alot. Neves from wolves is another decent CM we should have gone for. It's obvious that the kids are not ready for the big stage. Perhaps next season for integration but certainly not now. .

But it all depends on his contract, I think we will obviously offer him a year extension but he may be looking for his last big deal for a 3 or 4 year contract. We can not always just say keep and players agree to stay and ruin their own contract value.

Agree with everything except Gomez and Firmino. Gomez is still young, has looked fairly decent this season, Napoli game aside, after coming off an injury lay off and can cover at right back too. Firmino should be allowed to retire at the club, no question about it, certified club legend and won't get the credit he deserves from fans until after he's gone. Has also played very well this season so far and has stated that he's delighted at the club and doesn't want to leave.

So I think you summed it up really well. I totally agree with you about the lack of business in the summer and wondered if FSG thought they could get some players on the cheap at the end, someone like Gavi, who was never going to sign and played LFC to get the numbers he wanted from Barca. It makes for a very interesting summer next year. Maybe 4 midfielders and 1 attacker and maybe a Center back. I any which way a shed full of new players and a bunch of money, if Bellingham is going to cost north of £100 million, then how much is there for the rest, another £150 million not very FSG like and no players to sell!!! If FSG don’t spend north of £250 million then the squad will be very bare. Also never believe they haven’t the money they do and should be spending, they just don’t because it is all bout making money for themselves.

9:30 I completely agree with this, we should have bought more midfielders, Tielemans is only 25 million, maybe 30 and he would be fantastic, Barella is another option, Neves at wolves is fantastic. if we got 2 of them in, then went for Bellingham next season we would be golden because Ox is useless, he's constantly injured, Keita is done for, as are Henderson and milner when it comes to start 11. Milner and Henderson are fine to throw in late when you are ahead and need to work hard to keep the ball. never when you are chasing a goal, like you are when the game starts. Elliott needs to play second fiddle to Salah or switch sides over to the left. he cannot play on that right-hand side, he doesn't cover Trent at all, he's wasted and useless there. and he nullifies Salah too, I love Elliott but he does so much sabotaging damage to the team playing where he plays right now, Either we drop him to the bench and play Arthur or he needs to learn to cover Trent when he goes forward with Salah or it will never work for him. Tsimikas was almost sold to Benfica. During the Darwin negotiations, there was talks about Liverpool selling him once Benfica sold Grimaldo. Since Benfica couldn't sell Grimaldo for their expected fee, the deal with Tsimikas didn't materialize.

I'd definitely keep bobby and he's the type of player that puts team first. He would be willing to be a rotation player making a impact off the bench or starting and holding out till the big hitters get on. He isn't a guaranteed starter anymore but he's still one hell of a player to have at your disposal. If he wants to stay and accepts that role, I'd love to keep bobby.

The mane effect is not a thing, people forget the parts of season while he was at Liverpool where he went missing

Mane had been consistently average or below average since the start of Covid in Feb-20, apart from the 4 months after AFCON this year. In the first 20 games, where he started all bar one game (and played 85+ mins in all 19 he did start) he got 8 goals and 2 assists totasl. In the 13 games after AFCON he started, where he only played 65+ mins in 10 of them (he got subbed off more), he got the same 8 goals and 2 assists - so 50% better G/A per 90 ratio. Even then, he only averaged a goal or assist every 111 mins - Salah has never done worse than that in a Liverpool shirt, and usually is better than 90 mins - with his worst performance coming in the Covid year where he averaged a GA every 113 (in a team with frequently no midfield) - Mane and Firmino in the same season averaged one every 157 and 168 mins respectively! Salah, in his "worse start ever" has, in 540 mins this season, whilst playing super deep because of Elliot, has still got 2 goals and 2 assists - Mane at Bayern, in a much more dominant team and in an easier league, has in 487 mins 3 goals and 0 assists - all 3 of them in the first 3 games when they had an aggregate score of 15-1, and since then has been their worse player by far. Diaz, as Joe has pointed out, has been excellent, and been unlucky to only be on 3 goals - and is 5 years younger - I 100% agree that we do not "miss" Mane, but instead have had systemic problems in MF resulting from many, many injuries, and Elliot playing every game on the right.

This is probably the best assessment of the whole Liverpool situation. Personally, I think there is nothing fundamentally wrong with Liverpool, it's just people kicking them while they are down. The biggest issue is the midfield and it needs to be sorted asap because there is no creativity coming out of it except for when Tiago is playing and he of course is injury prone. Honestly, I feel Liverpool have not been able to fill coutinho's position with a similar player. The midfield has just been functioning well as an organism but individually it lacks creativity.

Love that argument, "Trent is world class if........Van Dyke is healthy, Gomez and Henderson are covering for him, with the best one on one shot stopper on the planet and without the right mid pushing up too far and covering him". Maybe its just me, but I don't remember anyone saying these things about Thuram, Cafu, Neville or heck even Reece or Walker in today's game. When you are world class, you're simply that, there's no need for what if situations. As a Liverpool Fan here are my thoughts: A lot of this list is very good and what us as fans have been saying, our midfield is very old and we didn't bring anyone but Melo in, but there is a few things id change. - Firmino has to stay. The big two are Naby and Ox. Get the feeling Naby not interested since Mane left and just sitting out 'injured'. Even Klopp looks exasperated at times when asked about his injury, Ox, love him but just injury-prone. How many minutes has he played/been actually particularly given his salary? Think these 2 could be replaced with active experienced players who fit our need: creative and a holding. That would really strengthen our squad and provide quality cover/competition

Bastoni in place of Gomez Jude Bellingham, Joao Gomes(seen a bit on youtube after speculation and seems fine), Nicolla Barella in midfield. Khvicha(napoli guy seems fire) for the forward role. I wont mind selling Trent and get a fee as high as possible to cover all this transfers and get a decent RB like Benjamin Pavard or Denzel Dumfries for a cheap. Their passes and crosses wont be as accurate as Trent but they are more sound defensively and decent in attack too and we wont need that much creativity too when your midfield is Bellingham, Barella and Thiago.

If they had more CB cover, I would have put Gomez in 'loan' There's still a talented Defender in there, but I suspect a mixture of his injures, lack of match sharpness and game time have really affected his confidence. I think he just needs a run of easy-ish games to play himself into form. I don't think a season long loan, with no option to buy, to Juventus would have been a decent move for all parties

Gomez as 4th choice CB is absolutely fine. As well as Bobby to be the origi impact sub rotation player. Midfield is definitely a big crisis. 3 players needed and we'll probably sign 2.

I'd keep Gomez and Firmino. Gomez still has potential but his lack of game time has been a concern. Firmino should still be kept, still a vital squad member. Assuming he stays injury free, he should be given a new deal. Regarding incomings, Bellingham 100% should be the main target. Sounds like Moises Caicedo is another Liverpool like. So could see those coming in and maybe one more slightly unknown player as well.

Trent is part of the reason midfielders cant play their normal role. With him in the side, they have to play CM and still drop deep and cover the wide area when Trent is playing like a second right winger. He's a Right Back who does no defending. It's abysmal. Yes he's quality and his technical abilities are top tier but then at that point why not then play midfield and buy a more natural RB?
