Wool rocks! I’ve had a lot of success with Buffalo Wool company socks. I’ve mushed in them at -56 and they’ve kept me warm. Having room for airflow around your foot is important…so for people wearing thick or extra socks, size up your footwear and make sure you can wiggle your toes.

you want to wear synthetic liner socks under the wool. This acts in the same way as any winter baselayer to wick sweat away and create a dry layer around your skin. The difference in warmth is significant.

I’m typically fine with one pare of merino wool socks if it have a good pair of boots Summer or winter my feet are not sweating profusely. That’s the killer.

Wearing too many pair of socks can make your feet colder because they are compressed too much. It's the air between the threads that insulates.

They can’t be the same size socks. You have to go a size up each layer so they fit over the last and don’t compress

After about 3kms my feet would be hamburger meat in 2 or 3 pairs of thick wool socks! Maybe ok around camp / cabin, but any further is a no no.
