The world's northernmost hotel is located in Svalbard, in the Arctic Circle, where polar bears outnumber humans and roam through the streets freely! We travel to this intense environment in the hope of ticking off two huge bucket list experiences - to see the northern lights and to experience the Polar Night, where there is 24-hour darkness!
In this video, we make our way to Svalbard where we stay at the Raddison Blu Polar Hotel - the world's northernmost full-service hotel!

⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

BEANS OUT!

If you are gonna leave your kid sleeping in a hotel room, while you go shopping, Svalbard is the place to do it. It has like little to no crime, and Longyearbyen is a very small village. They were probably very close to the hotel, the entire time. Plus they said they were watching him on a video monitor.
@linmurray436

I could never leave my child alone in a hotel room. Nothing is that important to go do. A monitor will do nothing to keep your child safe. It's possible it's illegal to even do it.

I rarely comment but I am hoping that they had a baby sitter for Noah? Why on earth would anyone leave a child on their own in a hotel room? It doesn’t take two of you to go to the supermarket. Never leave them alone in a foreign country. 🤷🏼‍♀️ what is that all about.

We have a husky cross, and he’s the most gentle dog I’ve ever come across, which is saying something as we’ve always managed to acquire dogs with a good temperament. It’s even more remarkable in that we found him abandoned on a river bank. You’d think that would affect his trust in humans. We initially handed him in to the dog rescue service, just in case he had accidentally got lost, not only did he not have a collar, his chip was still registered to the breeder.

You went to Tromsø! What a nice surprise to see you visiting my home town, thank you 😍 The darkness of winter in the northern hemisphere can be depressing even for some locals, but it teaches us to appreciate light and enjoy the particular colours of the polar night. When the sky is clear there can be beautiful light even in the darkness.

what is wild is that the food prices are pretty comparable to the average prices all across USA. 6 dollars for blackberries isn't unheard of in winter time when they are not in season.

It didn't seem like it was very cold...Agreeable! Svalbard is a tax-free zone, so you get everything you buy here at tax-free prices. In Longyearbyen's many sports shops, you can bargain on outdoor clothing and equipment, and in addition, alcohol and tobacco are reasonably priced compared to the mainland. I've never had any problems with it not being light during the day...or never dark at night. But now remember that it is constantly getting darker or lighter every day. We notice it from the middle of Norway and northward...the further north, the more visible.

Static discharges are from very dry air...below 35% humidity. Comes from heating up the room which dries up any moisturr, you may notice dry noses. Need a humidifier to fix and bring about to a comfy 50% ish. Dealing with this now as a northerner:)

If you are living in a far north community, you get used to the changes as they are gradual. It gets a bit darker every day then slowly gets lighter. The summer days were harder with kids as they didn't want to sleep. We had to put tin foil over their windows to make their rooms dark enough for sleep.

Thank you for the amazing videos! We are also looking forward to Noah's first "Beans Out!" outro! Also, I believe most of the residents take vitamin D3 supplements (or eat lots of salmon/cod) which helps as a mental stabilizer. If you don't get enough sun, or eat fish, then it's definitely worth getting some or at the very least checking your levels.

I too follow Cecelia and Christopher. I think having your own cabin you can be cozy and have your own life, it would be more enjoyable. And I have seen plenty of northern lights from there on Cecelias channel. Bummer you didn't get to experience it! And as far as being born there, that doesn't happen. People aren't allowed to have babies there. They have to leave the island to give birth and then come back afterwards.

We went to Iceland in early December hoping to see Northern Lights. They are fickle. It really depends on solar activity. Several areas of the planet claim to be best for viewing and I suspect it is about tourism. There is a Northern Lights tour in Iceland. It is not a country in 24 hours of darkness, but in December it was close to 20 hours. On the tours you go to a remote hotel and when the sun is up you do what you like. When it's dark the tour operators scout for the aurora and let their guests know if they are visible. That includes when you might be sleeping because sometimes they show up at 2 or 3 am. If they need to drive somewhere for a better view they do that. Anyway, if we travel again "just" to see them we will do so with the knowledge that we might or might not see them.

Google images to see what it looks like in the light months... personally I would go nuts... UK winter days are grey enough but we do have some light.... in the words of Eric and Ernie... bring me sunshine 😊

Like you my husband and I are fascinated by the polar nights as an experience so we had already booked for Jan 2026, staying in the same hotel as you guys. Did you just take your normal outdoor coats and shoes do did you buy snow related one#? Look forward to the next episode x

Static is also caused by not enough humidity, so really dry air which cold makes worse.

I see Noah has become a chip off the old block, you walked into the hotel room and he went straight to the mini bar fridge. Do they have any Ice Hotels there? Saw the Northern Lights in West Cork a short while ago only for a minute as it was a break in the clouds, went outside to chase a noisy Fox out of the garden. Solar Activity has been frequent of late. Even visible from Southern England.
