Haha thanks for the shout out slick. Me and my 62 ch will be at the antique bike drags next year maybe my 64 ch too. Get greeny there and we'll have a xlch showdown! Good video brother.

Oh i’m 100% bringing Greeny next year to specifically race YOU AND ONLY YOU!!!! I’m gonna be filming the whole event next year, to make a longer and better video of the event, plus how cool would it be, i’d be filming from my helmet while racing down the track, bummer for your in that case because you won’t be filmed, because i don’t have a camera for the back of my helmet!!! I will only race you a maximum of 3 races, I’m not trying to tare up old greeny!! I want her to last not thrash her at the track every weekend!!!! Anyways it’s on for real next year!!! Can’t wait !!! 🏁🏁🏁🏁🏆🏆🏆🎖️👍🍺

The Helmetless Outlaw - Rich Billy's 58 is sweet 👍 Compression isn't terribly but aftermarket cylinders can have a lot of imperfections. How does the plug look ? Valve guides on a flat head only operate in an oil mist compared to an OHV which require evacuation (they don't use seals) An efficient scavenge pump is needed to keep the cases from oil sumping. If you feel compression is low, pressurize the sparkplug hole with shop air with valves closed & listen for air through the carb or exhaust. Upswept exhaust magnify smoking because any oil is trapped & can not drain. Good luck & don't sweat the small stuff
@SlickHeadCustomCycles2 ай бұрын
I showed a picture of a plug in the video during that segment, they looked good!! And yeah your right, after filming this, I’ve done alot of reading, and i realized i misspoke, there’s no real “valve seals” and your also right about operating in an oil mist. That’s why i mentioned in the last segment, because a flathead barely has any oil pressure to begin with, i wouldn’t think it would be leaking oil past the valves 😂. And what you described is a leak down test, and yeah i can do that, i have a leak down tester as well. And thanks for the advice, i hope your right about the upswept exhaust magnifying the issue!! Also yours is the 3rd same opinion thinking that there’s really not a problem here- just keep riding it. But anyways, thanks for all the info and advice, appreciate it kurt!!! 👍🍺. Oh and keep your eyes and ears open, im back on the market for a Panhead!!! SLICK
@terrymassey76192 ай бұрын
What's up Slick! Thanks for the shoutout bro! When checking compression it does involve the valves seating properly, as well as the rings. To differentiate, pour some oil in the cylinder, if you get a higher reading, then the rings are not seated, if no change then it's the valves. Hope I stated that correctly. Take er easy bro 🤘
@SlickHeadCustomCycles2 ай бұрын
Yeah i know all about the pour oil in the spark plug hole trick, but it’s not that easy with a side valve engine, the piston sits over to the left of the spark plug hole and the valves sit to the right side of the piston with the spark plug hole above the valves
@terrymassey76192 ай бұрын
@SlickHeadCustomCycles My bad man, forgot we was talking about flatheads, You are correct my friend, lol! It's a different beast, Hopefully Matt can
@SlickHeadCustomCycles2 ай бұрын
@terrymassey7619 I mean it’s possible with a tiny zoom spout oiler to get the oil over the piston from the spark plug hole but it’s not a big deal. I’m about to take the right side tank off and do a compression test on the front cylinder just to compare the two

Ironheads pre 76 have a bypass valve that allows sumped oil to go into the primary, when you fire it up it draws it back into the engine, without the bypass it would barf the sumped oil out the breather, the check ball in the oil pump, or the body seal between the pump and scavenge side is why it's sumping, a lot of years have no seal between the sides of the pump.
@SlickHeadCustomCycles2 ай бұрын
Hhmmm thanks randy, i’ll have to investigate a little more on that I know I scoured through the manual and the breakdown of that seal from the motor to the gear drive sprocket. But if you are correct, and that is the case, that would be awesome it would be better than changing that seal!!! 👍🍺

Another good video. I was out in my shop from midnight until 10 this morning mostly working on my sporty. Bought it 8 years ago and left it in a corner until recently. One of it's problems is two frozen caliper brake bleeders. I tried various chemicals then a propane torch and finally the oxy/acetylene using the smallest brazing tip, nothing worked. Turned the bleeder a nice cherry red though. The bike hasn't been on the road since 1990 so it needs love. The reason I wrote this was because you used a butane torch successfully where my oxy/acet failed, I feel inadequate. Tomorrow is another day as the positive thinkers remind us, I think I need new solutions.
@SlickHeadCustomCycles2 ай бұрын
Yeah warren, you sound like you work my kinda shop hours!!! That’s how i am on the weekends. But as far as the butane torch on his bleeders, maybe we were just lucky, maybe yours just are a bit more stubborn!!! But I bet you if you go out there the next day and keep at it they’ll come loose. Usually you gotta let them rest a little while after a lil heat and all of a sudden they’ll come loose. Don’t give up. You’ll get it!! 👍🍺

it can take up to and over 1,000 miles to seat the rings, a leak down test is what you want to do, but with only 500 miles I'd just keep going for now, did your builder use the one piece oil rings? if he did they are known to break in slower.
@SlickHeadCustomCycles2 ай бұрын
Man, I hope you’re right Randy and that is the second time I’ve got that opinion about just keep riding it. It’s not an issue right now because it runs great runs strong. Just has that tiny puff of smoke and yes, the builder used the three rings that are all one piece, individually. Whose suckers are pretty thick too, i took notice of that when i completely tore down the engine and split the cases. 👍🍺 thanks again randy for all the advice!!! SLICK

in an emergency or to seal threads rub a bar of soap into the pinhole/threads to seal. to save the surrounding paint and not getting too much heat into the tin work use silver solder and a mofo soldering iron, all the best. ps slick, you obviously like your 'V'x, i'll trade a Yammy Virago for the Triumph, yuk, yuk, yuk. pps he said 'suck out the fluids', fnah, fnah, fnah.

Slick, the easiest & the most unobtrusive way to repair the tank is to clean it throughly & to solder it. My bike fell over in the back of my el-camino & it had a crack ad the rear threaded mount hole, so I brased it, which was a bitch to do with new paint on it. After reassembly, & the first ride it started leaking right through the brass. My father said he could fix it for me. So, we cleaned it with a wire wheel and soldered it. that took care of it; solder will give under vibration. Brass won't. He used one of the old soldering irons that's made with the big copper head on it, that you have to heat with a torch. Problem solved ! Just make sure to clean it really good & use plenty of soldering Flux
