“Depends on a lot of stuff” One of the things it depends most on, (perhaps) is how much the “insert” is internal or external. A character with an established intimate knowledge of the city might be able to make that declaration without “jumping past” a question of the GM. (possibly with an explicit empowerment of an area knowledge level, via something like a ubiquity average) it’s a little hazier in that territory, but by the time we get to something like a character with a “utility belt” talent, it’s tack sharp as internal to the character

Hi, very interesting, thanks for clarifying your perspective. I suppose everyone have a bar somewhere for when co-creation/narrative insertion starts to break immersion of feel unreal, and I certainly prioritize flow highly. But I suppose much depends on how well the groups play together and the expectations there (as a band, sorry party). One thing I really like is when players make up narrative hooks - the GM can always nullify if needed. Anyways enjoyed the ideas, yes a huge subject, would be interesting to hear more perspectives. And the immortal driftwood example, of course!

Yes, it is a huge subject. I may talk a little bit more about it, but I hesitate to make super long videos going into every little nuance because the eyes tend to glaze over at some point.

Good video, even though I have asked players in the past to make things up, “What’s the name of the tavern.” These days I am much more in your camp if we are trying to do a deep, immersive game. I like immersive games but that isn’t the only kind of RPG I want to play, plenty of room for beer & pretzels too.

It seems to me that narrative insertion is about creating a seamless external experience rather than having anything to do with the subjective experience of the player.

Signs tend to point in that direction, although that’s way beyond the scope of the video.

As a GM I’m definitely in the camp of players asking me questions about what is, rather than telling me what is

What about when you are a player?

@@ivanmike1968 - same. I’d much rather ask questions to build my character narrative on what options the GM allows (as a courtesy) rather than say this is what happens by making up the narrative myself
