This is how I warm my house and what I pay for electricity in the winter during the European energy crisis in Finland in 2022-2023. While listing all my use of electricity I forgot to mention having heated floors in the bathroom. I keep it on a pretty low setting to help dry the space but the contribution to actually heating the space is minimal.
I don't know why I was having such a hard time pronouncing "water" in this video. Eventually I just gave up and left it like this. x)

Wood burners are not as un-ecological as they might seem. You are indeed pumping CO2 into the atmosphere, but it's CO2 that was stored in the wood. Electricity can be a lot worse if it is produced from fossil fuels (gas, oil, coal). In that case we're increasing the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. As long as we find a way to replant the trees we burn, wood burning is actually a sustainable source of heat. Old wood burners however tend to be very inefficient as they don't extract all the energy they could from the wood. You can probably compare the exhaust of your old burners vs the more modern water heater: black smoke is a sign of inefficient combustion. On the savings side, layered curtains can make a difference in keeping the heat from escaping though the windows.

I wonder if insulating the house walls from outside is an option; not only for your house, but is it a practice in Finland? We did it in 2022, and it keeps a lot of warmth inside.

Yes this seems to be a pretty common practice here in Finland as well. Especially now when it's very popular to expose the original log walls indoor for decoration purposes, the insulating needs to be added on the outside. I have considered it for this exact reason in my house too but for now I have enough log walls exposed and don't plan on touching the outside walls. 😄

That 240 Watt 24x7 chicken coup heater is a big percentage of your electric bill. Are the chickens paying for that as compared to buying at the store???

Buying eggs at the store you mean? No they definitely don't. They're more pets than anything so I'm spending way more than I gain in terms of money.

I wonder if you can afford plastic window film . It's a miracle cure for cold houses and the only way I can live in old houses and heat them . I'm sure they must sell it in Finland . Stay warm , good wishes ❤

Oh yeah, I saw a video of those recently! Seemed quite handy for a quick fix. Although I've never seen or heard of them here in Finland. We're actually in the beginning stages of updating all the windows with thermal glass so that's going to help in a similar way. Going to make a huge difference. 🥶

@@camillafjader In which region of Finland is your home, and how many freezing days below zero do you get on average? I would love to see if you make some work on sauna.

I live in southern Finland. This year it has already been below zero for about a month straight. Usually the "real winter" in this region is between january-march when it's below zero or just around freezing on average atleast half of the time, last year it was more than half. I will definitely film updates on the sauna, can't wait to get it working!
