There is a difference between disability and social security. When you retire and pull social security it does not matter how much money you have in the bank. Also many people have retirement funds and pension that they get. Social Security does have a cap on how much you can continue to work and earn, that is a percentage of how much you get from Social Security.

I understand wanting to hide a one time inheritance. She would lose all her benefits and that is ridiculous. The government gives you help with one hand and takes with the other hand. My friends' daughter passed away on July 28th. She had CP. By August 3 Rd the government wanted a refund for the entire month of July. She was so devastated she didn't reach the deadline and then they threatened her and fined her. Oh Wow, 2 damn days and they wanted the entire month!!! The poor and disabled never have a chance to get out of poverty.

People’s Court isn’t a regular court, and is actually an arbitration. I’m not sure what happens if the person doesn’t pay what’s ordered, but I’d hope the victim of their actions to not stick to the ruling would prompt them to notify the legal system of their breech. You sign a contract agreeing to honor the outcome of the arbitration when you participate in it.

“I’m not giving her the $800 I’m on social security and I can’t”….nice try but she can take that judgment to the state and they will take a percentage out each month til it’s paid. So yes you will end up paying it eventually like it or not.

“The People's Court” is binding arbitration, which means both parties agree that the decision of a third, impartial party will be honored. The show pays all damages awarded to defendants and plaintiffs, as well as a $250 appearance fee.

@@kristin5026 cool then the defendant got lucky if that’s the case. But still under normal circumstances contrary to popular belief, being on government assistance doesn’t make you immune from paying a judgment. If anything it makes it easier for someone to collect on it.

The show pays the judgment here. In typical courts, people have to look into taking out liens or asking for the court to have wages garnished if the person isn't paying. I am not sure if that is possible if someone is on SSI.

This is so sad, and why many people, especially people past their 20s and 30s, have trouble letting new people in on anything but a superficial level. As time goes on, most of us get burned one way or another by a 'friend' we trusted, one we had known for a long time and had no reason to believe would do us dirty like that. It's sad but it's all too common.
