It definitely is an optical illusion. I umpire at a variety of levels and I can tell you that younger age group catchers are not doing the same thing. But high-level professionals are and it's very difficult to discern.

@@FactsMatter As an intro, I would still have the plate ump in position, but the camera can AT LEAST tell him whether the ball ever passed over the plate. Next step would be for whether it was at the knees or not (catcher is cheating that one here to good effect). So, he still has some call, but if it never got across the plate it doesn't matter how sexy the pitch was it's a ball.

Great video for young catchers to pick up some tips. Notice the shoulder and upper arm are mostly stable which creates the illusion that the catcher isn't pulling up pitches. Keep up the great work Jomboy!

I was watching spring training clips of bullpens and was paying attention to the catchers and the way they received the ball. Every single pitch, they started the glove below the ball and caught the ball in an upwards motion. I've began implementing it myself, and have increased the low strike being called. Cool to see a breakdown on it!

Love catching videos! When getting the low strikes called, a good framer is not just bringing the ball UP but also IN towards their chest at the same time. The diagonal upward/inward motion of the frame makes the umpire unsure WHEN you caught it. They think you moved your glove up from the dirt to your chest to and caught it there. Great trick my coaches taught me once I got to a higher level.

This video shows that getting rid of human umpires would destroy an interesting part of baseball, and would remove a skill-based part of the game that catchers need to have to play at this level. Framing pitches had always been around, and it's great. Do you want your sports to be a game, or an exact science?

@@SilhouetteLifter I understand your view. But yes... I want it to be an exact science. It's 2020... if the pitch is a strike, I want it to be called a strike. I don't care if my catcher does a backflip before he catches the pitch. I've seen way too many umpires go rogue and completely ruin a game because of terrible calls. The ump can still be back there. The calls can be transmitted through an ear piece or buzzer. Plus... it will eliminate anyone from accusing the ump of being bias towards a certain team.

You what it is about baseball I like... There's an art to it and that's a perfect example. Something goes with pitch selection and also when you got guys that really aren't blazing fast, but they seem to steal bases regularly because they can read the pitcher and get the steal off of him. Cool video, I was saying all year last year Sanches's framing looked absolutely terrible and I'm interested to see the improvement this year
