You really, REALLY don't want to have an accident with superheated steam under pressure. It will literally cook you, and at very worst, will strip the skin off any part of you it touches. I worked with a guy who had been hurt whilst using a steam Traction Engine, as we call them in the UK. He lost two fingers, and had to have skin grafts on both his hands, after a joint failed, and sprayed super heated steam everywhere, including his hands. I know that despite all the pyro stuff, you're careful, but super heated steam is a bastard - it's invisible, and by the time you see the condensed form, the damage has been done.

Those boiler failures are very dangerous indeed. My grandfather worked with steam powered electric generators in his youth and he was very paranoid with possible failures. He never had any significant injuries (only got small scratches and burns from assembling and soldering) but some of his older co-workers had some accidents with the hot steam and water, it can do some nasty stuff to the nerves resulting in partial to complete loss of function.

This, combined with the fact that he is basically holding a pipe bomb. I guess the solder would melt before anything goes boom, (and it did) but this is sooo sketchy.

When it comes to foam dart blasters, longer barrels actually hurt the performance of the blaster by increasing drag.
@discjockeyallen6 жыл бұрын
That is because with normal dart blasters the projectile doesn't have any pressure behind it. Air rifles, regular rifles, pumpkin and or potato cannons make use of the barrel to increase velocity of the projectile by utilizing as much of that pressure as possible for as long as possible.

MAKE SHURE PETER SEES THIS FOR HIS OWN SAFTEY, MAYBE EVEN COPY PASTE IT! Watch out for a BLEVE. That would be a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion. If the pressure rises to make the boiling point of water 150 celcius then if that gun pops a big enough leak (Or even if you pull the trigger) then you will not have fun. You will have 150 celcius water in a normal atmosphere which is supposed to be a gas at 100 so it instantly just about explodes into a shockwave of steam, burning you, and possibly sending shrapnel through your heart. Just a PSA. Love your vids, -Eddie.

Peter, take a page from the "flash-steam" powered engines. It is a small ceramic or stainless steel chamber inside the flame of a butane torch, which in turn is inside ceramic insulation. The torch heets the chamber red hot but the insulation keeps the gun cool to the touch. From a small reservoir, a premeasured squirt of water is injected into the red hot chamber connected to the barrel. The projectile fits snugly into the barrel possible with O-ring seal, and held "cocked" by a spring loaded release ball that can be adjusted to let the projectile pass eamat a predetermined pressure of 100, 200, or more lbs. the size of the flash chamber, water dose, and pressure will be determined by the barrel volume. Much smaller gun, fast and easy. Alternative might be to use a power tool battery to heat the small steam chamber electrically but I don't know an off the shelf item for this.
@MichaelSteeves6 жыл бұрын
look up some steam tables for saturated steam. Pressure and temperature are very predictably related. The problem is that your blowtorch causing localized heating of the joints. I wish I could get that to happen when soldering pipes with a tiny bit of water in them!
@patricklaqua55906 жыл бұрын
You could decrease the current draw by doubling up on the glow plugs (put two in series). Additionally, you could look into other heating elements such as NiChrome and Kanthal wire. Using the wire has a certain advantage because you can easily "tune" to your desired voltage and resistance (V=IR).

You have to silver solder all steam pressure vessels as the steam will cut through soft solder. Water boiling point is dependent on pressure so water boiling at 50psi is at a much higher temperature. Can’t remember off hand but it’s significant check out the internet for formula. Also it takes the same amount of energy to transform water at 100c to steam as it does to get the water from room temp to 100c

In theory the fastest way to boil the water inside the container would be to wrap a heating coil around the initial brass tubing and then to seal that initial brass tubing with a heating element with another to contain it and prevent burning your hands by wrapping it in insulation would be probably the fastest way to boil the water efficiently and safely and then having a purge valve to prevent any water from spraying out preventing anyone from being burnt from said boiling water
@andrewmoore45496 жыл бұрын
The pressure was coming up faster when heating the upper half of your boiler because you were heating saturated steam out of the saturation dome into the superheated range. You could try the Walter steam generator design if you want a more convenient steam generator. This priciple uses the dissociation of Hydrogen Peroxide (an exothermic reaction with a by product of steam, hydrogen, and oxygen) to heat the water used to dilute the h202 and produces steam. So fill a chamber with a beauty supply store 20 to 40 percent hydrogen peroxide and add potassium iodine (a disinfectant that can be bought from walmart) and you with have near instant air independent steam. The Nazi experimental rockets also used the same idea to drive the high pressure fuel pump (they used a highly unstable 75 to 90 percent H2O2).
@andrewmoore45496 жыл бұрын
Oh and I have designs for an RC plane that will use the air independent catalytic steam generator I just described :)
@nerd1000ify6 жыл бұрын
Hydrogen peroxide at that concentration is rather hazardous (it forms explosive mixtures with organic material), won't last long (it spontaneously decomposes to water and oxygen, a process that is greatly accelerated by being stored in anything other than a perfectly clean aluminium or glass tank) and will also attract unwanted attention from law enforcement agencies (who would, quite rightly, be worried that you were trying to build a bomb), so it's not really an ideal solution. I'd suggest a flash boiler heated by a propane torch for building steam powered R/C vehicles.
@andrewmoore45496 жыл бұрын
You are right about it being hazardous in higher percentages. The percentage I have used in my past projects when I started with AIB designs used store bought hydrogen peroxide for hair bleaching (about 30 percent). Thouse AIB pressured to about 70 psi and supplied 10 psi for about 30 minutes. As for the authorities comment, a lot of projects, including Lithium batteries, gas engines, and so forth have similar risks. Everything breaks down to safety, planning, and careful design.

Great idea. If you ever decide to remake it, how about using one of the 12v 120W car, cup water heater elements? They will draw about 10 amps. To provide a better power supply try a small 12v lead acid battery. That could sit in a box hung from a shoulder strap with a power cable to the gun. Also you could heat the pressure vessel with a flexible Kapton polymide heater element, this would stop the steam from condensing in the pressure chamber. The heater elements are around $5 on ebay and the flexible heater mats are between $15 - $30 depending on the size of the pressure chamber. The lead acid battery will be able to deliver the amps a lot more effectively than the LiPo cells you are using.

Came here for Lord Dranogical's "meh" comment again.
You, sir, are terrifying, and not in a good way. No pressure relief valve, no safety gear, silver soldering a pressure vessel (one intended to get hot no less), spraying boiling water at your cameraman, super heating steam (in that last test with the blowtorch) is not even remotely safe, wearing next to no PPE and having no regard for the safety of anyone or anything during this tomfoolery. If you insist on repeating this, make sure you get a proper pressure vessel that's temperature and pressure rated by a professional with a calibrated relief valve installed before you even think about making any of the other parts. Good god man.

Looks like a steampunk MP-40, I vote for a steam driven RC plane next. I know there was a steam powered airplane somewhere in the past, it was mainly used to demonstrate a lightweight steam engine, so now I want to see it in miniature.

Impressing us with your building skills once again.

Fill it with dry ice. Use glowplug to heat dry ice,converting into gas form and building pressure. It will be much higher than 100 psi,so use silver solder. Also put pressure release valve,because copper shrapnel isn't very pleasant. It will be very cold so don't get a frostbite.

You should make a pendulum clock. The amalgamation of 3d prints, laser cut wood, and brass could be awesome.

I was thinking don't weld the boiler unless you are putting a pressure release on it. Go with heavy duty steel.

Use 17/32 brass for the barrel. It’s a 100% air seal with a nerf dart. Also, you could make some kind of breech by using 9/16 brass over the 17/32 and making a slit to put the dart in.

TIL you channel is less than 2 years old. That is incredible, keep it up!

You should buy a welding gun this way you never have to worry about your “welds” melting again. Haha

At least you got to blow off some steam after all that constant work on that airplane lol

Now that's what I'd call a steampunk gun^^

peter i would like to see a solar plane that charges the battery wail flying basically giving you endless fly time and with all the you tube channels i honestly think your the best person for the job

Because its basically a blow gun if you put like a 5 foot barrel on it it will have increased projectile velocity

There are many forms of high temp solder that would suit your needs, but I would prefer threaded fittings or something more permanent.

There are solders available that are good up to 1100 degrees and over 400 psi, FYI. Just check gunsmith supply stores or HVAC supply stores. Although some will argue they're more like brazing rods, they can be used to sweat pipe.

i love that you name your songs used in the video, so many people use goods songs but i can never find them cause no one ever names them

Neat, but anytime you're working with steam, it's a good idea to put in an emergency release valve, so the thing doesn't blow up. And mind that boiling/pressure chart. Temperature is very important with steam tech.

I am trying to imagine a very specific war where an empire's survival hinges precisely on the use of this exact gun...

I like the steam gun idea but It would really be awsome to see a steam powered RC boat on your channel

So smaller chamber, and mount the element near the top of the water level. Cool project man

Hey Peter I'm a big fan of your show. I really like this device. Small portable steam generation can revolutionize the world. You have so many big ideas. I think you should double wall that tank and wrap in some plastic or rubber to prevent shattering. Also I think if you gradually dip the glow plugs. Or Maby drop water on the plug in a separate chamber. Try a extra tank to maintain pressure

You need an Airsoft chronograph for your deadly nerf gun builds, the read really good with fast moving projectiles.

I think if you had a seperate, small chamber to boil the water with the glow plug, it would work a bit better. However that means after every shot, you'll have to somehow get water in from a reservoir, into the boiling chamber and wait like 30 seconds for it to all boil. Cool concept though!
