Steam Radiator Air Valve Leaking Water

Love that Cast-iron radiator. Pitch looked perfect (1/16 inch per every 8 sections). Definitely caused by radiator service valve being in the closed position. Condensate had no way to return on initial call for heat, and in return, next heating cycle caused steam pressure to be forced out of vent. Properly diagnosed and efficiently repaired. 2 plumber visits... two new air/steam release valves.... still dripping (left a dry towel underneath for the morning heat turn on...) it wasn't soaked like before but clearly wet. I held a tablespoon under the air valve and the water is coming from the bottom of the new air valve...again. My building is 100 yrs old and (some) of the radiators have been removed and gas heaters installed in various apartments... I hope it doesn't come to that but the plumber said "if this second one doesn't work, we might have to replace the radiator" (Which seems off based on what I'm finding on these great videos!)

This happens on ours occasionally , the apartment gets so hot with the heat on unless it’s below freezing out so we have it on n for a few hours then close the valves. Previously we’ve called the super, now I know to ensure both the valves are very tightly closed if we need to shut it. Turning it back on for 30 mins just cleared up the leak. Thanks!

so I live in an apartment building and I'm pretty sure that the wet return is clogged because I do hear loud bangs in the pipes sometimes randomly and one of my radiators is leaking water from the air valve

Thanks being pretty handy myself but far from a plumber I suspected the problem might be the radiator not being shimmed properly. Watching your video made me realize that is a strong possibility but it could also be a clogged water return line. At least I have a clue now. Thanks

I had no choice but to remove the varivalve, get some buckets and towels, blew down the radiator and closed the main valve, it wasn't fun but I wouldn't be able to get maintenance to come by until after Thanksgiving weekend.

In my renting apartment, all radiator vent is installed at the top right corner, only one is installed at the middle and that vent is occasionally leaking water. What is the difference?

We have the same system in our building, with the same problem. Last night a valve & vent failed together... The room turned into a sauna... Water running off the ceiling .. paint melted off the wall .. even shorted the outlet !

This keeps on happening in my 325 soft studio (so it fills up 1/4 to 1/2 of my place when it is cold out. Ongoing since before I moved it. Each time maintenance says it’s fixed it comes back (like you said). The loud banging keeps me up at night too. Do you know how I can get my maintenance men to take this seriously? They keep acting like I’m crazy.

I’ve dealt with this for many years because the landlord keeps sending people who just change the air valve even when I have. It never gets fixed. I am tired of having cans and rags year after year to catch the water. Not to mention how I have to keep everything that can get damaged off the floor in my bedroom, daughter’s bedroom and living room.

I have this varivalve. Is droplets of water supposed to be coming out of them periodically? Like when I hear this hiss of the heat from the radiator I sometimes see droplets of water coming out. Is that normal?

Can you hook up supply water from the radiator breather(with prv), isolate the boiler, and crack open a valve at the end of the return, Then give it the beans ?

that would make a good gasifier radiator i remember how heavy those are.. like a chevy 350 small block. like an old 1950's fridge. i guess those have a nice old look but radiant & baseboard give better to the floor warmth 🏡🌋
