Steam Train in the Snow - Mountain Thunder in Winter - Western Maryland Scenic Railroad 734!
In January 2015, thanks to Mike Armstrong of the CoasterFan2105 channel, Dan had the opportunity to go on a very special private excursion on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.
No. 734 is a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive that originally served on the Lake Superior & Ishpeming.
Known affectionately as Mountain Thunder, this locomotive started pulling steam trains over the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad in the early 1990s.
In 2016, the engine was taken out of service, and it’s uncertain when it might run again.
So you can enjoy the sounds of this locomotive, this program is being presented with minimal narration.
The train included restored Pennsylvania Railroad gondola 614470 and Western Maryland caboose 1813.
This program is full of spectacular run-by shots, one after the other. The cold winter air made for great steam that swirled around the engine and under the cars.

734 has the distinction of being the first steam locomotive I rode behind as a kid, while visiting my great grandmother who lived in West Virginia.

Really incredible all around - there are not many running locomotives that can take you back a century and let you get a sense of the sights, sensations and sounds of a steam engine like this one. Very enjoyable video as always …

My wife and I rode that from Cumberland to Frostburg at about the same time frame. When it got to the turntable at Frostburg, they did 7 or 8 360's on the turntable, faster than you would ever imagine a turntable could turn. They have since restored a Mallet the 1390. I did a photo shoot on the Cass Railroad. Got to ride in the cab for a little while. The firebox looked like the center of hell

We only got the one spin on the turntable, but that sounds cool. I don't have the footage anymore but I did get to ride in the cab of 734 for a bit. It doesn't matter how cold it is outside, inside the cab of a steam locomotive it's always hot! They had two people shoveling coal. Thanks for watching!

Really cool to see you in my neck of the woods! I live just one mountain ridge over from Frostburg and have grown up with the WMSR and Cumberland being my home town. I play acoustic music on many of the evening excursion trains that the scenic pulls during the summer and fall months. As of now, 1309 is down and in need of some pretty serious work, but money is being raised to once again restore 734. Hope to see you out this way again someday!

I'm glad you liked the video. That's too bad about 1309. It was still being worked on when I filmed this video. I was hoping to get back there and see it running. Maybe Nichole and I will make it out that way sometime, and maybe listen to some of that music on an excursion. That sounds really nice. I'd like to see the area again when it's warmer.
