Thing is, half the steam locos preserved in Sweden were from the strategic reserves program. And it's also the reason why we have a E loco in Canada.
@bobsmith2637 Жыл бұрын
@mattskey1 it used to run on a tourist line just north of Ottawa, the Hull-Chelsea-Wakefield Railway. Unfortunately the track was washed out in flooding in 2011 and the line couldn't afford repairs. The locomotive (SJ Class E2 909) is owned by the city of Gatineau and is still in storage pending a potential move to another museum, while most of the passenger cars were scrapped.
@Lillstisse661 Жыл бұрын
@mattskey1 yup, the last shed was emptied sometime around 2008-2012. SJ even offered steam engineer certification well into the 70s though you had to get some museum to lend out a loco.

RE: locomotives being used as emergency generators, the incident you're thinking of was in Boucherville, Quebec in 1998 after one of the worst ice storms in living memory. An old CN MLW unit, M420 3502 was lifted off the tracks and moved down a street for several blocks under its own power (they had to keep yanking the trucks straight to keep it from veering off the road) until it was in front of the city hall. It did not produce anywhere near its full rated power output, I'm thinking it was limited by whatever transformer setup it was connected to. It generated power for about 5 days before being returned to CN, by this point they had already retired all their ALCO and MLW units. 3502 was sold soon after and worked for a couple different Canadian shortlines before ultimately being scrapped. The M420 had a DC main generator, but units with AC main alternators and/or inverters can be surprisingly easy to connect to a power grid. Conrail actually had a set of standing instructions for how to turn a locomotive into an emergency generator. For an SD40 you remove the rectifier (the diode bank) from the main alternator and attach the outside power cables directly to the alternator. Disconnect the load regulator from the rest of the locomotive's control system and adjust it manually to get the voltage you want. The main alternator is a three-phase machine, and running the engine in notch 6 should produce a frequency that is pretty close to what the power grid operates on. This would not allow you to tie the unit into the grid, but if you want to light up a dark, disconnected section it should be close enough, especially to run simple electrical equipment like lights and heaters. A SD40 should be able to produce about 1.5 megawatts in notch 6, and large diesels like the EMD 645 are quite happy to run at high speed under heavy load for many hours or days on end, just keep topping up the oil and fuel!

Having locomotive boilers powering vessels were more common than you think early on in the adoption of steam power on vessels. Locomotives were (fairly) compact, powerful, and decently efficient. For example, the first true major warship designed to have steam propulsion, the French ship of the line *Napoleon*, used a locomotive boiler as a secondary propulsion method to sails.
@themanformerlyknownascomme777 Жыл бұрын
they were incredibly weak though. Marine Engineering requires a level of power that is stupidly high: the most powerful Locomotive engines ever built only equal the power of a very weak 1890s torpedo boat's engine.
@michaelimbesi2314 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I’m kind of surprised by that and I’m a naval architect. The required rotational speeds to drive a propeller vs a steam locomotive are so vastly different that I’m honestly surprised it ever happened. Given that smaller propellers spin faster, and ships used to be smaller and trains slower, the 1850s was probably right about the last time that powering a ship with a repurposed locomotive was even possible. The optimum speed for a ship propeller is below 100RPM. For a locomotive with 48” drivers, that corresponds to 14.25 mph.
@justat1149 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelimbesi2314 Well, you have to remember the time period. Apart from locomotives, most steam engines that would typically be considered for vessels were extremely tall, as they barely were past their low pressure pumping engines that they started out as. This took significant space under the deck, not to mention the large side area taken up by paddle wheels for these types of engines. A locomotive might not’ve be been ideal in its power output, but being far more compact, it allowed to be fitted further below the main deck than a traditional steam engine. And for warships still primarily made out of wood, like Napoleon, having a massive furnace filled with scalding steam taking up a major portion of internal space for guns/crew/etc, and by being more vulnerable to damage, adapting locomotives was the best course of action And steam at this point was very much an auxiliary source of propulsion, due to the high inefficiencies of early steam engines. Also, Napoleon’s prop shaft was geared up coming off the engine, allowing for higher RPM at the screw, for the lower RPM at the pistons

Actually the Swedes DID hide strategic steam loco reserves in barns around the forest. There's a nice (German language, but maybe there's some version with subtitles) documentary by Eisenbahnromantik about a museum that went and saved one of those locos. It was so well prepared for this strategic hiding that it basically would have been good to run within hours - however they obviously still preferred to check it thoroughly. But in a war situation … yeah it would have been immediately working after DECADES of storage.

Hyce. Um, I know you don't seem to know the song "NorthWest Passage" by Stan Rogers that has been decided (by popular vote) to be Canada's unofficial second national anthem, but headphone sound warnings come BEFORE the actual piercing sound; not during or after you quarter of an idjit!! That being said, check out the song, it's a good one. The story behind the song is the NorthWest Passage of the Canadian wilds and the various difficulties various explorers have had to endure trying to traverse it from the perspective of a more modern person just driving down a road on the same passage. If I had to describe the song in simple terms, Much Music! Such Canada! Wow!
