We use to cook like this every single day! Then my parents got enough money and bought a rice cooker and life became busier, so we started using the rice cooker more. I haven't tasted home made steam rice in so long! I miss it! I'll make it this weekend! haha. Funny story, a few years ago a lot of my friends that came from Japan and China went over to my house and I showed them this contraption and was like "lets cook rice!" And they were all like "what the hell is that?!" I was like "don't yall Asians know how to cook rice?!" and they were all like "we have rice cookers, you guys are super traditional and old!" hahaha good times!

I'm still doing this too in India. My mom brought the bamboo basket from Thailand for me. Thanks for sharing.

Why not just keep it steaming in the bamboo basket for 45 minutes? You pour in the boiling water to reduce cooking time and save on gas, right?

I always forget to soak the rice overnight, so what I do is wash the rice, then pour boiling water, let it soak for 30 minutes, rinse all the starch that comes out, and it's ready to steam it

I have seen this in thai cooking vlogs but the net is not necessary you just water the rice as long as it gets more wet do not need the steamer just steam it in an open fire with charcoal it probably will take less than 5 minutes but this informative though thank you

gnayK Hi, I’m not sure what you mean by Hmong Lao salad. That’s a pretty broad request since there’s all kinds of salads out there. What specifically did the salad contain? Are you talking about papaya salad?

Thank you so much for showing this method! I cooked glutinous rice for the last 2 weeks with various results. I have the regular bamboo steamer and the pot but the method I use ommits the part where you take the rice out and pour hot water over. My rice goes chewy and hard within minutes. One youtuber suggested pouring boiling water into soaked drained rice (doesn't work well for me). I also cooked it in teflon pot with water. With your method there is much more volume of rice in the end as well, and it looks and tastes so much better. Also when I put it into bamboo container after about half hour it achieved a PERFECT consistency and softness so far. Thank you!

Do you really need to soak it overnight? How about 30 mins?
@CHerCreations3 жыл бұрын
Prefer to soak overnight to release the starch so you can get fluffier rice. 30 minutes won’t really do much

I have just found ordered the basket & pot from an Asian supplier in france at reasonable cost (on line they are usually expensive and I regret not buying same when I was in Phuket but I was ignorant then) I like trying various ways to cook rice and your video guide will be very helpful. Actually in Algeria they also sometimes use a similar style hand made rush basket to make cous cous (semolina) over boiling pot. I works for rice too.
