As the casting season heats up again, I wanted to have an improved way of breaking down my scrap aluminum into ingots. There are nice commercial ones available, but I decided to design and fabricate my own and in this video I will go into all of the details!

Suggestion: A set of tongs to fit one of these ingots so you can put it gently into the crucible and avoid splashing. I'm planning on starting out with this type of ingot mold precisely because it will allow loading ingots through the top hole without removing the lid. The fewer thermal stress cycles on the rim of the crucible, the better. :)

Embossing a name or design onto the steel ingot mold...just because you can. That would be awesome....just a thought

Nicely done! But... what about the splashing?
@NickCharlton0
@NickCharlton0 8 жыл бұрын
+brenovsky they are longer so can be lowered down into the crucible I think
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 жыл бұрын
+Nick Charlton This is the hope! The lid is about 4" thick at the hole and the crucible is about an inch below that. This leaves about 3" of ingot to hang down into the crucible. If it isn't touching the top of the aluminum, it would be very close. The shape might at least lend itself to between a 9.4 and a 9.8 on the Olympic splash scale...

can you fit soda cans thru the hole in the lid?
@Grunblau
@Grunblau 8 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Jones I don't think so, unless you drink a lot of 12oz red bull... (~2" diameter). Aluminum cans are about the worst source for aluminum thin, wrong alloy and covered in misc coatings...
