Let me tell you about a time about 20 long ones ago when I was an apprentice machinist for 3 weeks. Day 4 on the job working the good 'old cincinnati arrow, I'm given these 3 blocks of material. They're for 3 rather urgent, identical parts for a rather large food processing machine that moves itself through space via magic (helicopter). I'm told to manually face them off and start the cycle once that's done. I do two of them fine, but on the third one I advance on Z to touch and switch to 10ths to to do the facing operation, but I forget to switch out of Z. We did not have any spare material for that job and it took a week to get a new block. The supervising machinist shook his head and told me that I couldn't have picked a worse job to do my first big screwup on.
