The slow begining of the air raid taking over college football. Nebraska had a defense built to contain the big 8 teams (before the big XII came along) designed to stop teams with the power running of most teams in the conference at the time
@manuginobilisbaldspot4243 жыл бұрын
Great observation. I'll add that basically this helped to bring wide open offense past the Mountain time zone. Other than those Houston teams with Andre Ware and David Klingler and of course Florida's Fun n Gun, Midwest, East Coast and Deep South football was still mostly ground and pound.

Heupal was delivering under pressure like a pro though. Not much a good defense can do about a QB that gets into his drool that fast, and has a quick release on target almost every time. And he could pull down and run to pick up tough yards also. He was a leader, and played beyond his years in this game.

I can't wait to get this back. The sure tackling, and speed from this suffocating defense is demoralizing to opponents. This was a dominant Nebraska team with an all world QB in Eric Crouch, and Ous defense made him look subpar. Heupal was great in this game too. He was always cool under fire, and made good decisions while still throwing over the defense. He gave his receivers a chance to make a play, and they usually did. He looked like a pro.

After this game was when I really believed we were legit and it wasn't just smoke and mirrors. A lot of teams getting down 14-0 in no time to the #1 team in the nation would have folded like a cheap lawn chair.

It’s funny because Nebraska’s brand of football was smash mouth offense with a defense that packed the box. It worked in the 90’s because the majority of college football was all about the run game with a little bit of west coast passing. OU exposed Nebraska out by spreading their formations and sharing the ball while playing solid defense. In a conference like the big 12 where defense was an option, it was easy for them to run the table and look good to the rest of the country. Little did they know teams from the SEC would follow the same offensive trends while ALREADY POSSESSING dominate defenses would end up ruling college football from 2003 to now.

The world learned from the Florida NC game- just blitz when they empty like Nebraska did. Problem is Nebraska couldn’t counter the counter when teams started throwing screens and quicks
