I'm ashamed to admit that at one point I was hoping Baltimore would just blow us out 55-0 if it meant whole scale changes. Sadly little will change. @jonathanbodnar76702 сағат бұрын
The biggest problem all season is I can't tell if it a scheme issue or a player missing his assignment issue. Without looking at the playbook they both look the same. Either way it's a major coaching problem. They adjusted how they normally defend the zone read by having the edge crash on the running back, But they either didn't adjust the ILB's support rules to replace outside on the QB keep, or the ILBs just screwed up almost every play. The play at 6:56 is run perfectly. It is the only time I saw this all game. If it was me, I'd prefer to crash and keep the ball out of henry's hands, but you can't expect a safety to come down as the primary support on the qb keep. You don't need wilson pressing b gap at 1:16 b/c highsmith is already behind the tackle and covering that gap. It should be an easy tackle if the ball is handed off. Btw one of those plays at the end wasn't actually a read, there was no unblocked man, lamar just ran the fake so that it looks similar. I just see so many things that would be inexcusable from a scheme and situational play calls even at a d3 level. Gaps in zone read / rpo scheme, zone defense in the goal line, outside alignment on man coverage in the goal line, inability to execute a banjo or press your man correctly to prevent picks, spot drop zones instead of match-up zones, no creativity to create pressure. It's embarrassing.
@jonathanbodnar767021 минут бұрын
One more thing to add here for folks. You don't want the edge playing either/or watching the mesh to make a decision when they have that much talent in the backfield. you have to have a plan and commit to it. You can force them the way you want by giving them an easy read. If you're hesitating you'll never get to henry if it's handed off and you're flat footed with lamar in space and he's going to run around you.
@jonathanbodnar767017 минут бұрын
ugh, I can't stop after watching these plays. 8:51 and the defensive call has wilson blitzing the A gap. TJ has to take the QB not the running back in this situation. There's nobody else that can take the qb keep. All the gaps are covered (minus queen getting blocked backwards causing it's own problem)

@jonathanbodnar76702 сағат бұрын
@@Kazutopia808 crashing on the rb is a totally fine strategy. it should be a keep read. if it's handed off it is an easy tackle by the edge rusher. But you have to replace outside with the ilb instead of a safety from 12 yards deep. They adjusted the edge rusher rule without adjusting the ilb's. Plenty of teams defend the zone read and RPO this way. You don't need the ilb crashing inside when the edge rusher is already there. Against the ravens I would have preferred to keep the ball out of henry's hands, but if you adjust one positions rule you need to adjust the other as well.

I don't think there is any chance in the world we can pay Queen $17 mill next year. They have to either trade him or cut him. There is zero excuse for the way he played the last 6 weeks of the season. Watch him in this film...He is flatfooted before the play and flatfooted after the snap. Then runs the wrong way and...if we are lucky...he jogs back over towards the play so he can touch the runner and get a "tackle". Just look at the difference between him and 41. It honestly is not even close.

It's as if as season went on, the defense was UN-coached. Like they took this group of guys that could play defense, and had them doing so many dumb things, they finally didn't know what to do. Queen avoids his gap and almost seeks out to be blocked. TJ runs past Lamar who has the ball, to get to the back that doesn't have the ball. Minkah gets worse by the week. He's not only not worth his contract, he downright awful, a liability. He does nothing well, IMO. The D-line looked old and slow. I saw Cam pushed on his ass at least twice. This whole team is a huge mess. It all goes back to Tomlin and his very questionable position coaches and coordinators. I thought Arthur Smith was just a slightly polished Matt Canada, and nothing to write home about.. Let's hope he takes the Jets job. They have a long way to get competitive with the big boy teams. If I'm TJ, I'm thinking about a trade request. He's going nowhere here, and has maybe two or three years left and STILL ZERO playoff wins.

That crashing on the RB is terrible football. I would never tell my DEs to do that. They are to shuffle down so they can change direction for the keep. These are NFL players here. The way you set this up is with the 2 ILBs. They play man. 6 has RB and 41 has QB. They have to take a bit of a second before hitting their holes. We call it bats in a cave. You dunno what is really there and if you choose wrong you get a lot of stuff in your face. 6 should be hitting like 41 did and 41 should play it like 6 did. It was so backwards. They were in 2-4-5 far too much. I can't watch the rest. The looked too bad.
@jonathanbodnar76702 сағат бұрын
Your method is fine, but so is crashing on the rb. It should be an immediate keep read. If it isn’t it’s an easy tackle by the edge. The edge also needs to press that tackle inside and the ilb replaces outside on the qb. Instead everybody is crashing on the rb and they’re expecting a safety to tackle Lamar from 12 yards deep. My preference would be to crash and keep the ball out of Henry’s hands. But you have to have support expecting the qb keep. Embarrassing the Steelers can’t figure out a scheme that doesn’t have gaps and just relies on guys making plays to make up for it. College and high school coaches figured this out 20 years ago.
