That Maddy Prior voice: pure, ethereal - SUCH a wonderful reminder of how I met Steeleye Span, in the early 1970s via LPs, and used to wait with baited breath for new releases.

Maddy came down from the stage and danced up and down the aisles to stop the bouncers from attacking those of us dancing. I will remember that until I die. I loved her before that but especially afterwards.

Lost in the joy of the soaring notes of Peter's violin. Joyous. Thanks so much for then and now.

Peter Knight was and still is a totally brilliant musician. Just a perfect fiddler.
@davidlemargee37577 жыл бұрын
As I have mentioned on other album sites, Peter Knight is the most under-rated fiddler in British/Celtic music, and I have many fiddlers to agree with me. Dowd's Favorite on Ten Man Mop says it all! I just hate that he still looks so young! =)

Ho acquistato l'ultimo album degli Steeleye Span , E"wintersmith" dove c'è un brano intitolato "the dark morris tune" che mi fa letteralmente impazzire. E loro con l'aggiunta di nuovi musicisti sono sempre the best!!!!

Some very nice playing but Peter Knight's introduction to 'Seagull' is one of those WTF? moments. I have played in bands where you have a musician who likes to make the audience feel uncomfortable as he does here and it's very unprofessional.
@robotics1x4 жыл бұрын
That's because it's a cover-up. The song isn't about seagulls at all.
@BlackWhirlies4 жыл бұрын
@@robotics1x Whatever it is about, the way he delivers the story is uninformative and uncomfortable. I saw Steeleye about 10 times in the 70s and I remember him doing other similar monologues. People are paying to see a performance and whilst I believe it's ok to be aggressive towards an audience in some situations, there is a resentful nastiness about Peter Knight that is not right in this context.
@robotics1x4 жыл бұрын
@@BlackWhirlies I know. "Do you want to know or not? up to you". Explanations of traditional songs by Maddie or any of them help give the background to the song. This song is not traditional, he wrote it. I'm pretty certain it has a different meaning and I did write to him to ask some time back but of course got no reply.
@BlackWhirlies4 жыл бұрын
@@robotics1x What do you think it is about?
@robotics1x4 жыл бұрын
@@BlackWhirlies There are conflicting stories in it. Sure Penny could be a real penny as in shove-penny. But memories inside her? What is the gold watch about? All alone when counting the cost? Three in a bed? There's a sub-story about a polygamous relationship. Of course it's probably just my wild interpretation.
