Back in the day I was a mechanic in a 4 wheel drive specialty shop. At least once a week I was repairing the frame on the old square body chevys right where the steering gear mounts. It’s a common failure point when guys go to bigger tires. I have seen a few that completely broke the frame in two. I don’t recall the manufacture but we had a fish plate kit for that. It was 2 pieces one fit the frame side one fit the bottom. Many times we will sell that as an upgrade to lift kits we installed. To prevent the frame from cracking and breaking
@haroldphipps34572 жыл бұрын
Steve Summers (another KZbin channel) just put a Rough Country kit on his. Looked similar to what Eric put on. IIRC, Eric had already beefed up the lower frame rail. Steve had too. So neither put the one from the kit on. Maybe Eric will touch on that in the next video. @recoveryteam

I don’t know how that lasted so long without a frame plate. Must have been because it was without a front locker for a while. I usually add a plate on the back side of the frame, then use heavy wall DOM through the outside part of the frame and butted to the inside plate. Very strong repair. I saw the PSC ram on the table. That would eliminate a ton of stress.

Chock this up to hindsight is 20/20... but why didn't you oversize the holes on the plate around the steering box bolt holes? This would have allowed a perimeter weld to the frame in the bolt locations making those holes even stronger and eliminating another point for water etc. intrusion between the plate and frame.

I put cross over steering on my 1969 Chevy 1Ton and installed a 2 wheel steering box with the ports already installed so that it should be easy to install at a later time!!! It is definitely pricey for the set up and that was why I had just done the cross over steering and not doing everything at once!! @@D3thM3tal well I guess I didn’t no that!! But since I had to go to a two wheel drive box for the cross over steering if I remember right I had the option of getting a regular two wheel box or one with the fittings already welded in and then they just put caps on them so that you can just take the caps off when ready to plumb the new front hydraulic cylinder in!! I don’t think it was extra but if it was it wasn’t much at all!!!
