I was laughing through the first half of the video because I just did this job and knew what was coming. But I cut the driver side rack bolt out instead, and I put the new one in from the bottom with the nut on top. Saved a load of trouble and time for now and the future.

When i saw that i was like helllll no im not gonna do all that, then i though the same thing, just cut the bolt and flip it 😂

Cut the head of the bolt and get a new one. Reinstall upside down with blue loctite

Good to know but I just remove the bolts from motor mount and you know what I removed the 02 sensor and steering shaft too because I can't get access to remove one bolt lol anyways next time I'm going to cut the bolt alot of work just to remove that stupid rack and pinion

I cut the bolt as well with a sawsall. I did scrape the oil pan a little. Luckily I didnt go through it. Lol

To cut or not to cut? I say cut. But how, it's very tight? Double nut the bolt, spin it with an impact or air ratchet. Use a metal blade from a saw'zall, hold it with a small vice grip. The bolt is hard so it takes awhile. Replace it with a 12mm X 65mm flange bolt and nut hardness 10.9, reinstall with locktite.

Thanks for the video, I'm sure I'll be doing it this at some point on either of my trans ams. I'll definitely be cutting that bolt head off though, no way I'm dropping the subframe or anything like that.

Cut the bolt and flip it if u don’t wanna waste time / the slip notch that Connects to the steering may fight you detach the steering arm the slip the rack and pinion back in with the arm on

If I do a fluid flush do I need to disconnect the 2 hoses from the rack? If yes were can I get new o rings for it?

or you could cut the bolt on the driver side from the top. Re-install the new bolt correctly.

Even if I had to buy a sawzall and use it just once to cut that bolt I would. That day may come as I own a 1999 SS I bought new and still own to this day. No fault of yours WCG, but GM effed up with that impossible rack bolt.

Appreciate that bud I am not cutting my bolt it leads to unsafe problems like the rack falling out . Anyone against it check forums .

That's right. Also they are a special bolt.

forums are mostly hearsay, if you lose one bolt while driving, you are still going into the wall or off the cliff.

why did he not just cut the bolt? Could make a new one with treads both sides.,

Because you still want the bolt to go from the top down. You put the nut on the top and it loosens up the bolt falls out and you loose steering. That's why the manufacturer did it that way

I get it. But; If u cut the top of first, it will fall down. And than u use a bar with no nut and make the same length as the old..put it down and up. Then use a nut. Get it?@@whitecollargarage7777

Yes thats what I'm going to do. Also put some blue loctite on the bolts! Dont want to take chance on subframe crushing me for a stupid fluid leak...
