How many splines does the rag joint carry 26 or 36

Is this fixing the issue with steering wheel play when going side to side?

Yes, slack(looseness) in the steering system. After replacing my steering system components, one section at a time. The slack I found in it breaks down like this.. 50% was in the steering gearbox, 25% was in this shaft coupler and the rest was in the other frontend parts such as the tie rod ends, idler arm, centerlink and pitman arm. My ball joints are old too but they’re tight still, which shows the truck wasn’t heavily abused and/or was well serviced.😎👍
