Steering Wheel SKIN CANCER | 2015+ SUBARU WRX & STI

Clearly the steering wheel peeling like this is a common issue on these cars. Let me know if you have seen or experienced this problem first hand & let me know what you drive. I'm very curious to see how extensive it is. You should not have to condition your steering wheel every week just to prevent it from peeling like this.

With title u scared me. I was thinking people getting skin cancer from WRX's steering wheel lol. i accidentally nail scratched mine. from that point it keeps on peeling away easily. But I dont care anymore my car is more than 8 years old. Due to body work i received rental 2022 Mazda its leather interior feels way more upclass lol. But driving experience I miss my WRX waiting to get it back

Probably just by one of those custom steering wheel covers. Unpick the old leather and sew on a new one. It takes about 3-4 hours to DIY, but its rewarding when you finally finish it. Small businesses offer custom one including what type of leather, colour, stitching colour and Alcantara. Whatever you fancy. Tutorials are found online, so there is a lot of styles/techniques to apply for a your desired finish.

@@wombatcombat3770 That’s definitely an option, but it’s a stupid problem to have, especially on a car that isn’t even that old.

I have a 2007 Legacy Spec B for a daily and my leather wrap seems fine but very dry. Been considering getting some kiwi polish and a spit polish rag to apply a thin layer or two (because a brush polish would get it all over the damn place) and just let it set in. Might have to drive with gloves once or twice to get any excess off, but yeah thats my thought so far. Kept old army boots, black leather gloves, and an old leather jacket i used to own alive (RIP jacket... that got ripped beyond repair). I suspect it will at least help restore some suppleness.

I agree. When were you in? What branch? Had to be prior to 2008-2010ish if you were rockin BDUs.

Yea dude, my 2016 WRX is the sameeee way. It's terrible. Mines mostly just on top but it's really bad. I was thinking about one of those lace up leather things but never did it...

That crossed my mind too, should be a good option. I couldn't use those on my 06 since the leather is so much thicker, but this is a great application for that. Still a really stupid problem to have. Lol.

I have a 2021 it has not started peeling yet but I do use a sunshade so maybe that helps. I doubt Subaru uses real leather. I also have a 2019 forester and my leather seat already has rips.

That would make sense. Yeah, they definitely changed something. It's not the worst material, but you would expect the WRX & STI to have real leather, at least they used to. Another reason why I love the older cars...they actually put heart into designing them.
