As anyone here I’m a fan of flying & aviation. However, the complexity of even being able to afford a new aircraft let alone annual maintenance, repairs, holding/storage, landing fees, fuel, ongoing training & compliance just for a PPL, even a shared aircraft. These days most Australians can’t afford to pay rent let alone other expenses, I know as I alone work full time. Truly a privilege to those that have such an opportunity.

Flying clubs can help a lot, can get access to several nice aircraft for a relatively low monthly dues/hourly rate, but you get more privileges than renting, and more availability. To talk numbers, I'm in a club that cost $1500 equity to join, $70/mo dues, and has 6 aircraft, many are trainers but I typically fly the Mooney M20J for $150/hr (USD), and at 155kt cruise it's a fairly economical aircraft. Can take the aircraft on trips up to 4 days without additional approvals, and there's no per day minimum cost.

That's why I got myself a good pc, Msfs 2020, with some mods, a VR headset, and a decent yoke and joystick, depending on what aircraft I'm flying. Using simracing pedals as rudder for the moment, but saving for proper rudder pedals. Has cost quite some money too, but assembled and upgraded it trough the years so didn't feel it as much. And offcourse, it's not even a tiny fraction of the cost of getting into flying in real life. Combining all of that with nice navigation tools like little navmap, and watching a whole lot of tutorials, sometimes by real pilots, does provide a good degree of realism, a lot of immersion, and a ton of fun! I am looking to get a real flight initiation though, wich you can find for about €200 here in Belgium, and allows you to take over once airborn!

FYI, Stefan, DeltaHawk's new certified engine was flight tested on two testbeds: A Velocity V-Twin. A Cirrus SR-20. The company plans to have the 200hp version of their 4-cylinder 2-stroke jetfuel ready by the end of this year, then the 235hp model next year, and already said the 6-cylinder model is in development. Considering the answer you got from Stuart when you asked him, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a G8 a few years from now running one of those new 6-cylinders they're working on right now. You might actually see your unicorn. ;)

Great demo and review. I love the airport taxi display. I can imagine getting a complex taxi routing and struggling with tge airport chart. Engine wise. Because the SR22 is such a well designed aircraft a more powerful engine might push speeds to the high drag area's so an extra ten knots, 50 kg engine and extra fuel burn for not a lit of gain.

So, in other words, nothing has changed fundamentally. It is kind of becoming a decades-old Cessna approach to engineering-update colours, add a couple of bells and whistles and a pink ribbon, call it a new G, and bump up the price a bit. As you correctly pointed out, it is still the same old engine tech, and there is still no retractable option. DA50RG is a much more versatile and stylish aircraft of comparable performance.

Not sure how I feel about that fuel selector enclosure deal. Is it relying on a Reed switch / sensor to indicate the panel is open and go from auto to manual and back? Or is there redundancy and an override of some sort? I get that we’re moving towards more simplicity but to be honest if someone can’t track fuel balance in ga they probably shouldn’t be flying a low wing.

An engine burning JetA would be a huge benefit to a Cirrus owner. Cessna failed with it. They make trainers. The extra cost didn't make much sense unless you had a flight school at high altitude with wealthy students. I truly think it makes more sense for the Cirrus market. These customers are already expecting to spend high 6 figure and 7 figure sums for their aircraft. Lower fuel burn and higher range could be huge

1:45 Many years ago, Lexus modified it's motor vehicle engine for use in a piston single airplane, and had it certified by the FAA. Then the project vanished from the Earth. Too bad because that engine checks all your boxes except for jet-A1. Probably it could have been further modified to utilize that fuel too.
