The key to the first example is that because a half diminished chord has a tritone, it can substitute for a dominant chord. The F#m7b5 works so well here because it’s the upper structure of a D9, which is the V/V (secondary dominant) of the subsequent G chord.

I was just listening to Wes Montgomery's 'In Your Own Sweet Way' which uses a lot of these types of chords but they flow so melodically.

Great vid. I've always wanted to know how and when to use diminished and dominant chords, etc. 👍

Thanks! Glad you found it useful!

@@stefanguy I'd really like a vid, say for simplicity, C major and C minor ( so we know how to apply it in both), and making a 2, or 4 bar progression for each using all the half dim, dim, dom, aug, etc., For each and to show how to put them into practice and why each works. That would be dynamite! 🤞😊

@tubeo943 жыл бұрын
Half diminished is the seventh degree of a major scale, which is the origin of most scales. So u can play it in all scale

Minor 7 Flat 5 is a Fully Diminished Chord not Half like you know it is compare to a Diminished 7 Chord that you know in theory which is a Diminished 7 Flat 5 Dim7(b5) = A Diminished Dominant 7 = dim5(7), °5(7) m7(b5) = A Diminished Major 7 = dim∆7, °∆7
