let's not be ignorant here, everyone. the NUMBER ONE REASON why most, if not LITERALLY ALL transwomen who want to change their voice, try to feminize their voice, is NOT because other ppl "want it". No. The simple reason is that they can never longer ever be mistaken for a DUDE AGAIN. All of us transwomen (mtf) want to be seen as WOMEN, AND WE UTTERLY HATE IT TO DEATH WHEN STRANGERS CALL US SIR. WE WANT THEM TO ALWAYS CALL US MA'AM, WITHOUT US NEEDING TO REMIND THEM OR TELL. THAT, IS LITERALLY THE REASON WHY ANY TRANSWOMAN DOES VOICE COACHING. It is done to match their gender.

Since you asked for tips, I'd recommend seeking out a speech-language pathologist (SLP - full disclosure, I am one) to avoid vocal fold (cord) injury in the long term and to talk about the non-vocal elements of communication, whether MTF or FTM. Your voice sounds clear, well-trained and healthy (aside from that throat clearing eeeeeeeeek) and you broke down the elements of training really well! I hope that the barriers to the trans community accessing SLP services become smaller and smaller. I know this video will be so helpful to other trans women, it's something no cis SLP can really provide their clients

What Stef said about the importance of tone is very true. I have a fairly low voice for a cis woman according to a lot of people. There's also cis men who have fairly high voices at the same pitch as mine. However, theirs sound distinctly more masculine than my distinctly feminine voice due to the difference tone and smoothness. Another good example is Toad and Toadette from the Nintendo games. Toad has a more masculine voice, and Toadette has a more feminine voice yet she seems to be a bit lower in pitch. In short, pitch isn't everything. So, if you really can't get that specific frequency just yet, don't worry. (I do a lot of vocal work so I'm obsessed with voices.)

Hi Stef!! It is seriously so awesome that you made this video. I am a Speech Language Pathology student and I actually just finished a presentation on MTF voice therapy and vocal feminization that I'm giving in class tomorrow! Most of my resources came from scientific journals, so it's really awesome to hear a first hand account of it. I might just even play a little bit of your video for my class as an added bonus. I found out about these types of applications for speech therapy a few months ago, and was completely inspired. I'm hoping one day I might be able to open a clinic and offer voice training lessons and therapy for those in the transgender community. Your voice is a powerful tool and I hope to help others know how to use it to the best of their ability and without damaging their vocal chords! Sorry for the wall of text! When you go to school for something for four years, your life becomes completely wrapped up in it! Thanks for being awesome and always inspiring others, including myself! :) Also side note: the technical term for "flow" is intonation. Just thought you might find it interesting because we just learned about that this semester!

Another thing I can add as someone who used to be a Bass II in high school: There is a common trick for those of us whose head voice would crack into falsetto or sound too nasally. This is to modify what is sometimes called your "throat voice". This only deals with pitch, and tone and flow still need to be worked on separately. You'll still want to do the head voice/chest voice thing that Stef describes, but this will change both your pitch and your formants (often referred to individually as warmth, rasp, and clarity). You may notice as well that if you move during this time, your accent will change. That's what happened to me anyways, I went from having a sort of blended New York/southwestern US accent (which ended up sounding like I was from the Midwest) to a soft Southern/Mid-Atlantic accent because I moved to Virginia. Doing this is a strenuous process, and it can hurt a bit (word of caution, and yes, I mean physically hurt). I started training my voice three and a half years ago, and have been invariably gendered as female through my voice for about two years, including during a brief time in a call center. First, start by doing a simple swallow. Swallow slowly. Make sure you can feel where the tightness in your throat moves to. You should notice right before whatever you're swallowing actually enters your throat that you'll feel a tightness in the back of your throat and chin. Try to hold all the muscles in your throat and neck in this position. You should still be able to breathe through your nose, but your throat and neck will be tight. You will especially be able to feel it where underneath your chin meets your neck. Hold this for about 30 seconds. Start slow. You'll start getting a sore throat, like you've been yelling at a concert. Unfortunately, for those of us with a "wonky" head voice, this is normal. Release all those muscles, and do a normal swallow two or three times. Repeat this process one more time. Afterwards, you should notice that when you switch from chest to head voice, not only will your voice sound less deep, but in the process of switching you will hit a sort of sweet spot that sounds higher and softer than your chest voice, but less nasally than your head voice. It will sound, for lack of a better word, more normal and natural. This is your throat voice. You should notice it sounds a bit brighter, a bit lighter, a bit softer, and a bit higher. If you don't, that's okay. Start talking your way up, as if you're getting excited about something. If you have a musical instrument nearby, start talking up in a chromatic scale (meaning all 12 notes, including sharps and flats). Once you hit a point where your voice starts to crack, stop, back up a couple pitches, and talk in that higher, softer voice. It won't resonate as sharply in your nose and face as your true head voice, won't crack like your falsetto, but will still be higher. Read something like a long-ish poem or a short chapter of a book aloud. Or, read a news article aloud. Something roughly 2-5 minutes in length (shorter when you first start out, longer as you train more). Eventually, after you've been talking in this voice a little, that highest pitch you can reach will start to fall back down a bit. Do the swallow trick again if you are prepared to do more training, or use this as a time to take a break or stop for the day. The swallow trick simply pushes that higher limit up a little by temporarily tightening up your vocal chords and making them easier to manipulate. Speaking with this voice will strain it a little at first. Don't do what I did and start applying it by working 8 hour shifts as a cashier using the voice the whole time. Each time you do this, starting with holding a swallow, and ending by talking your voice up in pitch, you should notice the pitch you can reach at the end gets a little bit higher over time. You are tightening (and slightly thinning) your vocal chords, which makes them resonate faster and at a higher pitch. You are also training your muscles in your neck and throat so that you have better control over them and can more easily manipulate your voice. Also, you are changing the formant frequencies in your voice (meaning all the smaller pitches that give your voice its quality rather than its true pitch). Eventually, you may get to a point where, by using your throat voice, you have trained the airflow and muscles while you speak such that you can actually use your true head voice without it sounding weird. This is what happened to me, at which point I only focused on bringing my voice up like Stef showed in the video. Or, you may never get that natural sounding voice in your true head voice, like what happened to my close friend. But by training that throat voice, you will be able to more easily control your voice, and you will more naturally talk higher and softer (which helps with tone as well). Overall though, this is a bit of a tough method, and I only managed to work through it so fast because I was a voice actress for a little while and have had years of choral training, and if you find Stef's method easier, by all means, do that instead. This is about making your voice sound like the real you! There is no one-size-fits-all approach. If you have any questions, just reply to this comment and I'm more than happy to help out!

This is very interesting and enlightening and you seem to be full of knowledge, and not "just" because you're transgender but because you seem to have a lot of background knowledge about how voices work. This video is important. So I'm really happy you made it, because I bet this will help a loooot of people!

This is great even if your not trans. As a former radio DJ, I had to learn to drop the higher pitches to be heard clearly. Women in radio and television all learn to drop their pitches, tones, etc. just for clarity and enunciation. Great Video Stef!

im a biological woman, BUT have a form of autism. As a kid i used to have a "weird and akward" monotone voice in a lower pitch. What helped me a lot was singing lessons. I never realized, but I am in a teaching degree, and people compliment me on my voice now. I realized the singing lessons that mainly focused on emotions and my identity in a song helped me a lot too get into my teacher mode voice. Maybe this could help trans people too? i know that singing might be a hard thing for many people, but ive seen people off all skill lvls take singing classes and be successful with any type of voice. including myself, someone who isnt talented or anything.

3:20 helped me so much. Years of singing have made the pitch and resonance parts easy for me, it's the "male style" of speaking I'm having trouble moving away from so seeing/hearing the old voice right next to the new one really gave me a ton. :-D

Hi, Stef! I'm AFAB Non-binary who is medically transitioning to male. I started out identifying as a transman, on HRT for five years, found I felt more comfortable identifying as non-binary as I found I don't identify as male or female. I'm still medically transitioning to male as I have dysphoria over female anatomy. I feel most comfortable in a female presentation, including a feminine voice. This video will help me a lot in achieving my vocal goals, thank you!

The best thing you can do, as always, is practice. The goal is to, over time, increase your natural range and the best way isn't to strain yourself, but to attempt to sing where you want to. It will suck at first and for a while, but just keep at it until you get there. If you can't quite sing at pitch, then sing in a slightly lower key.

As a singer trained in classical music, I can say this is actually spot on. Training the strength of your vocal folds and where your voice naturally "sits" is something anyone can do, whether they're transgender or not. It's something I've certainly spent a lot of time thinking about/practicing, both in speech and in singing. I'm not trans, but I love your videos, Stef! They're so informative, and your spirit is so positive and bright. Thank you for sharing yourself with us :)

It's weird, before fully realising I was trans (mtf) I thought I was always just talking how I naturally did. And puberty didn't have as much of an affect on me than it does for some people. But then a while ago I realised that I've actually been raising/changing my voice for years, I guess since it started to deepen. So now if I really try and relax I can get to what feels like my 'natural' or lower voice and it's kind of surprising how much I've actually been changing my voice for so long without really realising it. I guess it just goes to show how you can 'train yourself' to be different like a habit, and that it won't always be a conscious effort, after a while it will be harder to do things how you used to.
@flamephlegm5 жыл бұрын
The difference in “flow” you are suggesting sounds a lot like the musical concepts of staccato vs legato, whereby notes are played with a rigid separation (staccato), vs. a smooth seamless transition between notes such that they appear to be joined (legato).

This is a lot of the same advice given to singers who want to expand their vocal range. I've trained in singing for a bit and I have improved my range, but I can't imagine training myself to speak in head voice all the time or to keep my soft palette raised for so long. You clearly worked hard on your own training and it's paying off. The video itself was awesome. Very informative and helpful. It's also great that you sound like a naturally speaking female rather than a drag queen (which was the case with the first video I clicked on), so you're your own success story. Good job!
