Steinberg news: Is Cubase incompatible with the latest Intel processors?

What do you guys think? Is is a problem in practice and have you ran into it already? Update November 6th 2023: The Steinberg technical note now states that Cubase 13 supports hybrid architectures without limitations!!

I have Dell XPS 8950 desktop PC with Win 11 with Intel i9-12900K CPU, and I have experienced weird dropouts, not just in Cubase but even when playing KZbin in Chrome. I still don't know where the problem is (Dell community have described same error but different causes) - so I have decided to buy Mac Studio M1 Max instead of that PC. Steinberg seems to have been very slow in customer support lately, I have opened two tickets because my Nuendo purchase - but still NO reply or anything from Steinberg, even after 4 weeks.

@@dokma_eu FYI I'm using a fairly recent (Oct 2022) Dell Optiplex 5000 with an Intel 12th Gen i7-12700 and 64gB ram. Had bad "dropout" issues every 15-20 mins that indicated as ugly CPU spikes on the Cubase cpu monitor. Cause turned out to be Dell's own "Vault, "Support," and "Techhub" services. Uninstalled as many as I could and disabled the rest in Win Services. Be advised that every 4-6 weeks they self re-enable. Dell sucks as a realtime platform.

@@CB-Music I have read about that possible solution on the Dell's Community website. I also have older (2016) Dell XPS desktop with less issues than the new one. At the end I believe I will get rid of it and acquire Mac Studio M1 Max which does not have such issues (has other issues but that's another thread). Thanks for letting me know and confirmation that Dell's services are to blame. I even thought of buying non-Dell motherboard and moving all components into it. Too bad I even bought that Dell XPS, because Mac Studio came out like a month after that. Dell's equipment is not as good as it was 10 years ago, now that I have experienced it I would not get another Dell even if it was for free!

Hi, I'm running Cubase 12 Pro on Windows 11 pro and i7-12700. Everything is running smootley . Haven't noticed any hickups. Even with heavy virtual instruments in the project. Nuendo also is running with no problems 🤷‍♂

Thanks for the video-- hopefully it gets Steinberg's attention to fix ASAP-- I just built my new system w/ Intel i7-13700k/maxed out ram at 128GB on Win 11 (Cubase 12) and doing a simple export mixdown the other day (not very many tracks or plugins) I got a CPU overload error-- it did not complete the export-- I couldn't believe it-- I immediately started researching and found out about this exact problem-- already looking for other DAWS without this problem-- I've spent too much money on Cubase for years to be dealing with this garbage

Huh? Proof that as a tech, and music professional I can also say you should never just leap blindly into the latest (_______) fill in the blank with cpu, OS, driver, bios, sw, etc. If it works now and delivers, dont't f__k with it. Part of the release to market is to get sales. Testing is not completely perfect, or it would take too long to get it out to customers and thus lose revenue. Thank you to Steinberg and Lanewood for reminding us of this and giving a little warning.

Yes, it’s also what I did when I built my new DAW. Didn’t go straight to the latest processor and motherboards. And when a new version of Cubase is released I tend to get it right away (because I’m interested), but keep using the older version for serious things until I’m more confident on the new release.

It’s not an issue, Steinberg is freaking out over nothing. My i9-13900KF is 8P, 16E and 8 hyper threaded and I’m running the latest Z790 and DDR5 ram and when I run a huge project, all cores run and I get zero dropouts. I know several other composers running 13th gen with NO issues.

You're coming to this a bit late! It's a real issue: I have had to disable all E-cores on my 12700K to get consistent performance in Cubase. This does not appear to happen with Reaper on the same system, but I load Cubase much harder. However, blaming Steinberg alone for this is a little unfair, it is Intel's Thread Director that is not fully optimised for real-time operations, and Microsoft and Steinberg have no option but to use it. I do hope it is all sorted out soon, otherwise I'll build a 7xxx AMD DAW box instead and retire the 12700K for gaming.🙄

Yes I only recently heard about it. Sorry to hear that it is affecting your DAW. And indeed at the moment it is unclear in which software layer(s) this needs to be resolved. Good that the workaround is working for you but unfortunate of course that you cannot use the CPU as intended. You could try to only run Cubase without E-cores so that at least it doesn’t affect other applications.

@@LanewoodStudios Yes I tried that, but it did not work on my motherboard. Why? Dunno. Disabling the e-cores using the gaming setting in the BIOS works fine. The symptoms, btw, were very high usage of CPU when e-cores engaged. I am sure it will vary depending on what the user is doing. If it's mostly audio recording, it may not be an issue. I am a MIDI composer primarily, using many VI plugins, so it was an irritant for me. As this machine is a dedicated DAW I don't care about losing the e-cores in other applications. I have also purchased Vienna Ensemble and am planning on offloading a lot of VI plugins to a secondary 64GB machine upgraded to an AMD 5700X, left over from a Proxmox server 1700X. We'll see how that goes. On mixdown it's all less of an issue because I can increase the buffer size a lot...😄

Thanks for this video. I seem to be running into this problem with a 13th gen i9 and Cubase 13. Turn hyperthreading etc in the bios and Cubase goes nuts. Even turning it off im getting some bad glitches

Perhaps report it to Steinberg and the Cubase forums because it should be ‘fixed’ in Cubase 13. Also try some of the workarounds to see if they make a difference.

Thank you too for this enlightening video 👍 The YT algorithm suggested this video literally 1 hour before I was going to do perfomance tests on a new 12700 (Win11 & C12) today. Initially I planned to go for a 12900, but 12700 seems to do the job as well, a noticeably improvement anyway coming from a 6-core intel. I asked Greg Ondo almost 1 year ago in the Cubase hang outs if there were known issues with Alder Lake CPUs - he didn´t advise against it. Reason being why this case was closed for me and why I didn´t do further research when purchasing the new machine recently. I can´t say yet if my system is going to run into performance problems - I am also a little bit relieved to see that some 12700--users on this page confirm that they have no problems. But honestly, Alder Lake CPUs have been released Q4´21, and I presume that a vast majority of Cubase users are on Intel/Windows - how long will it take them (whether Intel or Steinberg) to fix this issue? This is really disappointing...

Hi, I just purchased a new config with a Core I5 12500. If I'm not wrong this processor have only P Cores (6 ?). So I shouldn't have troubles using Cubase ?

Yes I think you're right. This processor only has p-cores so looking at what Steinberg said about the cause of the problem, this processor should not be affected.

Bought a new 13900K 128GB RAM Win11 and C12 (coming from 5820K 32GB) and finally after disabling the E-Cores in BIOS it´s running smooth...had so many dropouts before. Hope they fix it soon.

Read on gearspace or vi-control that a overclocked 13900k was running flawless… can’t remember which site, but looked promising… I’m waiting to see how the new Xeon W-3400 or 2400 series performs; single-core, latency, all P-Core over clock headroom. The RAM expandability, pcie lanes, etc… look yummy.

Hi. I have never heard anyone talk about this issue before. So i just bought a new computer. Running win11 and 13gen i7 prosessor, and 32gb ddr5 5600mhz ram. Cubase runs ok. But i notice that the asio guard is alot higher now than it was on my old i5 8gen prosessor, and 16 gb ddr4 ram. So something is off. Hope steinberg correct this soon.

Per Steinberg: Update 2023-08-28: Recent tests indicated that the situation has improved significantly and feedback from the user base supports the results. While we are still working on optimized versions of Cubase and Nuendo, the behavior running on the latest Cubase/Nuendo 12 and Windows 11 builds is mostly as expected.

In 2020 I bought an HP desktop with i7-10700 10th generation. I started learning mixing with Cubase 10 Pro. After some months I realize I was running out of resources very often so I opened a case with Steinberg. They found that Cubase was not spreading the tasks correctly to all the cores but 2 or 3 only. In the end I gave up and switched to Reaper. Never looked back.

It would be helpful to give some context as to what "performance" means in a professional context. For most students/beginners or even intermediate hobbyists this won't be an issue unless they're just piling up plugins. My students are already like "Does Intel suck?" and these are people who's parents WORK for the company....

Thanks. Check out my videos on DAW building, most notably parts 2 and 3 for installing software and migrating Cubase. I typically leave at least the previous Cubase version installed and get rid of the older ones when I’m confident the new one works for all previous projects as well. You may also want to keep Cubase 8.5 installed as it is the last version that can still load projects with 32 bit plugins.

So... For the most part I have not had issues on my 12th gen with Cubase 12. But... Anytime I am dealing with Video in my project Cubase completely fails and I have to "end task" Its really unfortunate. I read that upgrading to windows 11 can help, but I didn't have lock with that, nor have I had luck with modifying the P & E cores. Hopefully they bring a fix soon, at the very least in v13

I own Cubase 12.0.52... The fact that Steinberg can't recommend processors that have been out for quite a while now (Nov. 2021)... seems odd. But then again, it is Steinberg. This is my last version of Cubase. I will find another DAW. BTW, I am an AMD Threadripper user... but a bad company doesn't deserve my cash.

Wasn't aware of this issue, real bummer if it's affecting so many! I personally have the AMD 5950X, it's so powerful, I don't see any point in upgrading for another 5-6 years, no issues experienced with it as such, main issues relating to VST's, but there is no such thing as a perfect system.

Wow so this is what's going on. I just built a new system with a 10 th gen I 5 and I'm having issues. At first I thought it was a program cause audio only would just go dead. Or skip. I couldn't believe it was my new upgraded system. Wow. Ok I'll have to adjust or maybe go back to what ? But this is crazy. Cubase mixer is what keeps me with the program. But this has to be fixed.

The more I read about this, the more I see only 12th Gen CPU's having the issue. Steinberg just did a global 'No 12th Gen or later", but I believe they are wrong about 13th Gen. The 24 core/32 thread i9-13900KF in Win 11 Pro has been flawless and several other MIDI composers I know that built 13th Gen are saying the same thing. Normally AMD is a way to go in this situation, but I would say not this time, the 13900 has a 20-25% faster single-core and FPU performance over the comparable 7950X, it's REALLY fast for Cubase. Steinberg had NO business bundling 13th Gen in with 12th in their hurried press release IMO. I ran Dom Sigales' stress test at 137 tracks to hit full 100% CPU just before audio breakup (no one else posted that high of a score) and all cores were equally being used. Then I ran only 50 tracks so the CPU would run at 50% and what I saw surprised me: The Thread Director in Win 11 did an amazing job of thread control, it started parking cores (threads) it didn't need, and 4 of 8 P cores got parked! And only a handful of my 16 E cores got parked, Cubase was using them in real time just fine, not All P, then "move to E". Plus the 8 hyperthreaded Cores off the P's were running equally in the performance monitor. If you have a 13th Gen on Win 11, I WOULD NOT DISABLE ANY E CORES, test your system first. This new rig is so bloody fast over my older 7940X 14-core, it's crazy. I did splurge for an RTX 3080 12GB, and my GOODNESS, you should see how Microsoft Flight Sim runs, lol.

at this stage, i haven't get any work-around . i tried so many ways even updating the drivers and the system bios but nothing works, Cubase 13 has compatibility issues with Ryzen CPU and GPU and lots of people who are using AMD cpu and gpu seems to have these problems of lots of freezing plugins not displaying correctly, lots of crash dumps and many more@@LanewoodStudios

Just built new DAW tower last month w/i9-13900KF (24-core... 8P + 16E), 128GB DDR5 RAM, Z790 and several PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives on Win 11 Pro and Cubase 12 Pro has had zero problems. I ran Dom Sigales' Cubase stress test and hit 147 tracks before the first dropout. My older i9-7940X 14-core hit 86 tracks, so I'm definitely getting great performance. Any chance Win 11 Pro handles this better than Home? And Steinberg is going to have to address this eventually, but so far the 13900KF seems to be fine. I demoed Cubase a few months ago really, really, wanting to buy into it. I passed. Why? Because here was the very company that created VST. Of all the DAWS I own and demoed, Cubase had the most problems recognizing of all things... VST's! Meanwhile Studio One (former Steinberg engineers) has never had a single issue with very VST's that Cubase wouldn't recognize. (And runs AU Mac plugins) I'm sorry, but a company like Steinberg that has been around since the 90's, should be king of the DAW by now. I waited over 1 week for assistance, ultimately deleting it. Nonsense. Former S1 user here, now back on Cubase 12 - and very happy! Cubase has now all the big features that S1 grown with. More inserts, effects on audio events, plugin pictures in browser, lower zone, bezier automation curves and muuuch more drag drop. Dont get it why people use S1. Cubase mix console is the best and most flexible, control room is great, I love multiple markers, can t live without cycle markers, render export ist so wonderful and flexible, effects and synth and drummy is on par with logic. S1 lags in all of this. and epecially with the bough of fender it feels no more good. Presonus is only copying features from other daws, mostly from Cubase. so why not use the original. Cubase is very stable and performance is same like S1 on my systems. PC i7, Mac Pro M1.

However, I’m going to disagree with you on most of your points. To me, it sounds like you really didn’t dig into Studio One enough. You can insert any FX you want onto any part of an audio event within SO. Just drag and highlight what part of the event you’re targeting and drop your plug-in onto the highlight. Done. Plug-in pictures? If you’re talking about the list, no, not available with the exception of PreSonus plug-in icons. But that doesn’t bother me. Within SO I have the ability to pre-save any arrangement of my preferred plug-ins. I simply drag it from my favorite list onto the channel and boom. Multiple plug-ins are there as I like it. An incredible timesaver. I create “Bezier” exponential curves all the time. There’s an entire list of shapes to choose from between any two points for your automation in SO. More drag, and drop? Everything in SO is drag and drop. Not only that, when you drag most things in SO, instant routing occurs between tracks and channels without having to “assign“ anything. Another time saver. SO mix console is perhaps the closest you’ll get to the real thing in the physical world. It’s precisely why I chose it. And… It has a feature that allows for real analog crosstalk between your channels. it’s actually a really exciting feature. Multiple markers? I can insert as many as I like. I’m not sure what you’re talking about here again. If you want to talk about rendering? Studio one will create MIDI patterns based on an audio event. And vice versa. It also has an explode feature which will take all the notes, say from a piano part and explode them onto separate tracks for instant orchestration. Studio One also has an entire mastering suite. There isn’t another DAW out there that offers this at the price point. It’s absolutely incredible that I can master an entire album for a cohesive experience. Not only that, anything you tweak within your project carries over instantly to the mastering suite. Nothing to go back and tweak between projects. It’s all done instantly. Anyway, there’s lots of differences between the two as far as features go. No question Studio One is lacking with multi channel support for Atmos. But that’s most likely coming. (SO updates and features arrive very fast compared to others ) As for Fender? I see it as a bonus. All that talk about dumbing it down has already happened. They simply created an option, which will simplify the screen for beginners. Which is a good idea in my opinion. Logic has something similar. Frankly, I think the best DAWS out there are MOTU and Reaper. MOTU s incredibly stable and a powerhouse when it comes to multiple channel support for Atmos. (10 channels) Danny Elfman has been using it for years as a composer. The problem with it for me is it’s unusual layout. I just don’t have time to wrap my head around it at the moment. Reaper? When a guy like Dan Worrall is telling you how good it is. We should probably listen. While I do have Reaper, I find its Windows 98 approach is just a little slow going with the workflow. But I’m hopeful one day they will improve that. The VST issue I had with Cubase was just one of a few things. I was floored with how fussy it was. I remember I couldn’t even get the metronome to work because the “main” button assigned to it needed to have… another button switched before that one would work. It was mind-boggling clumsy. And for my taste, the GUI is just awful. I feel like it’s marketed towards 90’s death metal teenagers. All that black, red and white along with that horrible skinny font literally hurt my eyes. I personally feel that Logic and Studio One are very clean for the eyes, which is important to me after working long hours on it. Believe me, when I tell you, I wanted to like Cubase, especially when guys like Hans Zimmerman endorse it. And I may reconsider it once again… If… They can at least get it to recognize all my VST’s. And maybe get on board with AU as well. Otherwise… Half my plug-ins that I purchased are useless.
