I kinda know where Kelly is coming from.. I knew a soldier (through my family that were also serving at the time) once who lost one whole leg and up to his knee on the other. His entire life was to be part of the force and he loved it beyond everything. He had always wanted to be a soldier and it meant everything to him. He stood on an IED on his final month of duty. Without his legs, he was severely limited with his movement. He had hi-tech prosthetics fitted but it just wasn’t the same. His range of movement was not ever going to be the same. He was slower and found it hard to stay upright for longer periods of time. Because of this and other injuries he suffered in the explosion, he was deemed unfit for active duty. This tore his life apart. The force was everything and he just couldn’t go back to service. He became depressed and lost his will to live. He attempted suicide but was, thankfully, saved. He struggled for a while but with help from family and friends, he decided to try to get back up on his (metaphorical) feet. He’s better now and has found a new passion working as a wildlife ranger sorta position somewhere in Africa (I guess his heart never did really leave the desert). Though he and I were never too close, I understand sort of how worried Severide may be for Kidd. She loves being a firefighter, he doesn’t know if she could live without that being part of her life.

This was incredible to read. I’m glad the soldier was able to find another passion and reason to keep on going. And that last sentence you wrote was a perfect way to phrase it. They said they wanted to save her life, but would it really when she loses the most important part of it?

I understand both. In med school, we joke that surgery is like math: you do the most logical way possible and that's that, no strings attached, no emotions, just cut, do what you have to do, and close it again. Rhodes first choice was perfectly save and made total sense. But to the firefighters, they just see their friend, they do look for the same angle as Dr. Rhodes because they have all the possible attachments with her, it's about emotion and love. Both were justified in their way of thinking
@nycot1073 жыл бұрын
Everyone is defending Kelly and the others for telling the Doctors not to remove her lung, but what's more important? Her job, or her life? In reality, surgeons facing this same situation can not afford to risk the patient's life, and quite often the best option may not be the most agreeable one, but it's the only one that guarantees the best result.
@jennyvasquez76183 жыл бұрын
@Nycot I understand what you say, but many sougeries that this days are risky but necessary for different kind of patient, for example brain tumors, spinal cord, bone marrow, broken pelvis o any other bones (specially in elderly and kids, ...etc) are performing by many capable surgeon. I think if is a patient in a very bad car accident o a solder wounded in combat the goal should be to preserve life at any cost but if the situation is under control and there are moderate risked is a doctor obligation go for the best of possible results.

That is Kelly Severide and that is his girlfriend (now fiancee) he is fiercely protective of everyone at 51 especially Stella and has always had her back. If there is a chance they can save her lung (and there was) he will fight for her. @Richie or Dean idc That's because that's Lt Kelly Severide and the woman being treated is his girlfriend Stella Kidd. Kelly and the rest of 51 just wanted to know if there was any other way to save Stella's injured lung other than removing it because it would mean Stella has to retire from firefighting due to disability. Kelly was upset the whole time because he felt it was partially his fault Stella got her injury. This was the 2nd part of a 3-show crossover that started in Chicago Fire's 7x02, then followed by Med's 4x02 which this scene is part of and it ends on Chicago PD's 6x02.

This is when someone's job is also a life. She literally lives for saving lives and helping others. It is also hard enough for a woman to work on that position nowadays and when she is so good at her job it is especially hard to give up on something like that. Why risk that she breaks down after loosing her job, maybe gets addicted to something when thay could try to save her life. Sometimes you can't just look at the person like she's an object that needs a reparation, people have lives and carers and sometimes someone's job is all they have
